## Appearance

The Rhamphorhynchus has a long, pointed head with needle-like teeth and large eyes. Its most striking feature is its very long tail, stiffened by rods and ending in a diamond-shaped flap, quite different from the short tails of later pterosaurs. It flew on leathery, bat-like wings.

## Taxonomy

- **Kingdom:** Animalia

## Interesting facts

- Wow! Rhamphorhynchus had tiny, needle-sharp teeth that curved forward, perfect for grabbing slippery fish!
- Wow! Some fossils are so amazing, they even show the last meal of a Rhamphorhynchus – usually little fish!
- Wow! This ancient flyer lived in coastal areas alongside early birds and marine reptiles during the Jurassic!
- Wow! Unlike later flying reptiles, Rhamphorhynchus had a super long, stiff tail, often longer than its body!

## Special abilities

- **Tail Rudder:** Rhamphorhynchus has a unique diamond-shaped flap on its long tail that helps them steer and balance expertly during flight, like a living airplane rudder.
- **Fishing Pro:** Rhamphorhynchus can quickly snatch slippery fish from the water's surface with its sharp, forward-pointing teeth, making it a skilled ancient angler.
- **Keen Eyesight:** Rhamphorhynchus had large, powerful eyes that helped them spot small fish from high above, giving them an advantage when hunting over ancient lagoons.
- **Ancient Glider:** Rhamphorhynchus had hollow, lightweight bones and leathery wings, allowing them to glide efficiently for long distances over water.

## Measurements & details

- **Length:** 1-1.8 m
- **Weight:** 0.5-1 kg
- **Era:** Mesozoic (Late Jurassic)
- **Extinct Millions Years Ago:** 145

## Diet & Feeding

Rhamphorhynchus mainly feasted on small fish and other tiny marine creatures.

- **Primary Foods:** Small fish, Juvenile squid, Crustaceans
- **Foraging Method:** Pursuit

## Ecological connections

- **Eats:** Jurassic Herring (*Leptolepis coryphaenoides*) — Its primary food source, snatched from coastal waters.
- **Depends on:** Ancient Pterodactyl (*Pterodactylus antiquus*) — Competed for the same small fish in shallow lagoon waters.
- **Eaten by:** Sea Crocodile (*Metriorhynchus geoffroyi*) — Larger marine predators posed a threat near the water surface.
