Aussehen

Measuring about 40 to 49 cm in length with a wingspan of 82 to 95 cm, the Squacco Heron is a stocky bird with a relatively short neck and a thick bill. During the breeding season, adults acquire an elegant appearance with long, lanceolate feathers draping from the nape, a golden-buff back, and a greenish-blue bill with a black tip. In non-breeding plumage, they are much duller and streakier. Crucially, their wings, rump, and tail are pure white, which is almost completely hidden when perched but becomes instantly conspicuous in flight.

During the peak of the breeding season, the base of its normally greenish-yellow bill turns a stunning, bright cobalt blue for a brief period.
