Painted Redstart

The Painted Redstart is a dazzling, hyperactive member of the wood-warbler family Parulidae, renowned for its striking plumage and energetic behaviors. Resident in the montane canyons and pine-oak woodlands of the southwestern United States down through Mexico and Central America, this small passerine is a delight for birdwatchers. It stands out not only for its bold color palette but also for its distinctive habit of hopping along tree trunks and canyon walls while constantly pivoting, fanning its tail, and half-spreading its wings. This restless, rhythmic performance is not just for show; it is a highly evolved foraging strategy designed to startle resting insects into flight. Once flushed, the insects are swiftly snatched mid-air by the agile bird. Unlike many other warbler species where only the male sings, female Painted Redstarts are accomplished singers themselves, often performing duets with their mates.
