Adding to its understated beauty, the Banded Sunfish exhibits shimmering blue, green, or gold iridescent spots scattered across its head, body, and fins, with a distinctive dark spot on its opercle (gill cover). Its fins are rounded, especially the tail fin, which helps distinguish it from other sunfishes that have slightly more forked tails.
