The star-shaped or funnel-shaped flowers, approximately 3 to 5 cm in diameter, are clustered on upright, wiry spikes. Each bloom is famously tri-colored: typically sporting five to six petals of brilliant orange, salmon, or red, which abruptly give way to a dark purple or black band, framing a bright, sunny-yellow throat.
