These stout, ground-dwelling rodents are easily identified by their compact, pear-shaped bodies, short legs, and sandy-brown or buff-colored fur, which blends seamlessly with their dry grassland habitat. They have broad, rounded heads with large eyes set high on their skulls, allowing them to spot predators easily, and small, inconspicuous ears. Depending on the species, their short, flat tails are tipped with either black or white. On average, adult prairie dogs measure between 30 to 40 centimeters in length and possess strong, clawed front paws perfectly adapted for digging deep, complex burrow systems.
