This medium-sized, deep-bodied sunfish is easily recognized by its distinctive long, narrow opercular (ear) flap, which is entirely black and lacks the light margin seen in other sunfish. Its body displays an olive-green to blue-green color on the back, fading to a bright orange or deep reddish-yellow on the breast and belly, particularly in breeding males. The sides of its head are adorned with wavy, bright bluish-green lines, and its fins often show hints of orange, yellow, or blue. Adults typically measure between 10 to 24 centimeters in length.
