OstrichLand USA offers an unforgettable opportunity to meet giant birds up close. This unique ranch in California's Santa Ynez Valley invites visitors to interact with and feed over 150 ostriches and emus. A visit provides a fun and often hilarious experience, as these colossal birds eagerly accept food directly from specially designed bowls. It's a prime destination for memorable photos and an exciting educational encounter with some of the world's largest flightless birds. Situated on 32-33 acres between the charming towns of Solvang and Buellton, OstrichLand USA feels like a slice of the African savanna or Australian outback brought to California. The main attraction is the interactive feeding experience, where both adult ostriches and emus, as well as seasonal baby birds, are keen to be fed. Visitors can witness the impressive stature of male ostriches with their black feathers and pink beaks, and female ostriches with their grayish-brown plumage, alongside the distinctive emus with their fluffy brown feathers and bright blue necks. Beyond the feeding pens, OstrichLand USA features viewing platforms that allow guests to observe the birds roaming freely in larger enclosures, showcasing their impressive speed and natural behaviors. The property also boasts a gift shop filled with a delightful array of ostrich and emu-related merchandise, including fresh eggs during laying seasons, feather dusters, and unique eggshell art. It's a fantastic roadside stop that promises smiles, laughter, and a genuinely one-of-a-kind adventure for all ages. Eager to name that creature? OstrichLand USA was established in the early 1990s by a South African couple, Colin and Rosie Cooper, who brought their ostriches to Santa Barbara County in the late 1980s. Initially a private farm, it soon opened to the public, primarily focusing on selling ostrich breeding pairs, fresh eggs, and feathers. In 2003, Trudy and Adair Brown purchased the farm. Despite having no prior farming experience, Trudy, with her retail background, transformed OstrichLand into a thriving attraction, becoming an expert in ostrich and emu care. Her nephew, Blake Fowler, joined the business, contributing to renovations and upgrades including new fencing and improved parking. The ranch has also gained pop culture recognition, appearing in the movie "Sideways" and inspiring a "The Simpsons" episode titled "Ostrich World."
Ostrich egg-laying season, and consequently the best time to see baby ostriches, is during the spring and summer. Emu eggs are laid in winter, with their chicks hatching in late winter or early spring. As it is an outdoor attraction, check the weather before your visit.
OstrichLand USA is ADA accessible, including portable restrooms. The path leading to the bird feeding areas is also stroller and wheelchair accessible, although some sections involve a slight downhill grade on an uneven surface.
The primary highlight is directly feeding the ostriches and emus using a provided feeding bowl.
Don't miss the gift shop for unique souvenirs and the chance to purchase fresh ostrich or emu eggs seasonally.

Hold tight to the feeding bowl
The ostriches and emus are very eager eaters and can pull strongly on the bowls. Use two hands and maintain a firm grip to prevent accidental drops or sudden movements.
Protect your fingers
Keep your fingers clear of the feeding bowl's edge when offering food, as the birds peck aggressively.
No petting
While you can feed the birds up close, do not attempt to pet them for your safety and theirs.
Visit in the morning
The birds are often most active and enthusiastic for feeding earlier in the day.
Wear appropriate footwear
As it is a farm with dirt paths, closed-toe shoes and clothes you don't mind getting a little dusty are recommended.
Purchase multiple feed bowls
The birds devour the food quickly, so buying a few bowls per person or per group will ensure a longer and more satisfying feeding experience.
Stay hydrated
There is not much shade in the feeding areas, so bring water, especially on warmer days.
