Tropenhaus Bansin

Come to Tropenhaus Bansin for a close look at tropical animals in a compact seaside zoo.

About

Come to Tropenhaus Bansin for a close look at tropical animals in a compact seaside zoo. The animal attraction is called Tropenzoo Bansin and shares its Goethestraße address with an aparthotel. Start with the entrance plan: a tropical hall, terrariums, an aviary and outdoor enclosures give you several different places to explore without a long walk.

This is a visit for lingering over small details. Choose a few animals to watch properly, then come back to a favourite before leaving. Cacti and other cultivated plants are part of the experience too. With the beach nearby, the zoo fits comfortably into a mixed day of animals, fresh air and sand. Be ready to snap and learn! Get the Snappit app to identify any nature species you find here.

The zoo grew out of a Bansin resident's exotic plant collection in a local nursery during the 1970s. Animals followed, and a replacement building complex brought the zoo and apartments together in the 1990s. A major renovation and new zoo concept began in 2012. The cactus collection still connects the visit with those horticultural beginnings.

What to do here

Try the tropical hall and terrariums first, then the bird and outdoor areas, leaving time for the playground. Treat that as a flexible order of sights; follow the visitor paths and any closures on the day. For children, choose a simple challenge: find different ways animals use their tails, or compare a bird's perch with a monkey's climbing branches. A second look at one enclosure can be more rewarding than hurrying round everything.

Seasonal info

Usual hours are 10: 00–18:00 from May to September and 10:00–16:00 from October to April. Check the zoo's website before travelling. Indoor areas offer a useful rainy-day option, but the full visit includes outdoor enclosures and play space.

Accessibility

Local tourism information includes the Tropenzoo among accessible outings. For a wheelchair, walking aid or larger pushchair, check your particular needs with the zoo on +49 38378 472080: ask about the entrance, thresholds between areas and toilet access. A WC is marked on the visitor plan.

Don't miss

1

Small primates

Watch golden-headed lion tamarins and Geoffroy's marmosets when they are out in view.

2

Reptile details

Look for a panther chameleon among the branches or follow the outline of a ball python.

3

Tropical planting

Compare the cactus display with the leafy tropical hall.

4

Birds and play

Pause at the aviary, then leave time for the outdoor playground.

Things to try

Make one small discovery

Before leaving, let each person choose one detail to remember: an animal's way of moving, a colour pattern or a plant shape. If someone has a question, keep it for the staff rather than trying to prompt a reaction from the animal. A quiet second look is a good ending to this little zoo visit.

Wildlife and habitats

Take time to watch one individual before looking for another. Notice how it places its hands and feet, and compare its movements with the marmosets.

Look for the pale face framed by darker hair. A quiet pause gives you a better chance to notice small movements than calling towards the enclosure.

Search the branches carefully before deciding the animal is hidden. Try to pick out the outline of a foot or tail among the leaves.

Look for the whole outline of the snake, including any coils, rather than expecting movement. Compare the pattern with the background without tapping the glass.

Look closely at the shell and legs from the visitor path. Let the animal choose its own direction, even if that means waiting for a photograph.

Choose one perched bird and follow it with your eyes before reaching for the camera. Compare the colours on its head, chest and wings.

Good to know before you go

Use the full address

Goethestraße 10, 17429 Seebad Bansin. Nearby Heringsdorf and Ahlbeck also have a Goethestraße.

Arrive by rail

From Bansin station, the zoo describes a roughly ten-minute walk towards the beach. The bus station is nearby; car spaces at the site are limited.

Check entry first

Day visitors need a ticket. Aparthotel guests have separate included-entry arrangements; ask reception how to use them.

Breakfast before animals

The shared-site café welcomes non-residents, but it is a breakfast café closing at 12:30. Plan an afternoon meal elsewhere.

Keep the animals comfortable

Do not tap glass or offer your own food. Any permitted feeding is limited to the zoo's designated food and enclosures.

Bring a lead

Dogs are welcome on a lead. Leave bicycles, scooters and balance bikes outside the zoo.

Keep children close

Under-12s must stay with an adult. Follow the playground's age guidance and keep children off enclosure barriers.

Finish before heading out

Day tickets cease to be valid when you leave, so return to your favourite animal before going to the beach.
