Snappit: The Story of a 4-Year-Old's Curiosity
How a curious four-year-old, too many nature questions, and a reverse image search turned into the vision behind Snappit.
"Daddy, what's that?"
"Errmm... that's a... flower... Umm... it's an... Umm..."
My son Aeon was four years old. He was slowly moving on from his obsession with emergency service vehicles and construction equipment to asking questions about every tree, flower, and insect we encountered on our walks. Unfortunately for him, my knowledge of flora and fauna was questionable at best.
After witnessing me resort to taking a photo and using a reverse Google image search to identify a hydrangea, the secret was out. From then on, any time I hesitated, I was met with: "Just use your phone for it, Daddy!"
The Realization
While I had figured out a passable way to get answers, it lacked structure. It did not help me actually remember what we had seen, and it did not give us a way to document our discoveries. I realized that what I really wanted for this constantly curious kid was a way to track, document, and review our captures together.
That idea became the core of Snappit: a family-friendly way to discover what is around you, save those finds, and turn them into something you can revisit later. It also shaped the kind of product we wanted to build from the start. If you want to try the flagship app itself, you can download Snappit on the App Store.
As I talked to other parents, I realized I was not alone. We all shared the same frustrations with the current state of "kids' apps." We wanted our children to be tech-literate, but we were terrified of them getting hooked on dopamine-loop garbage, inappropriate ads, and endless microtransactions.
We decided there was an entire world of apps we could make better.
Our Driving Principles
To build the ecosystem we wanted for our own families, we committed to five core pillars:
- No ads, ever. We do not believe children's games are the right place for advertising. Period.
- Privacy first. Insights into learning should stay between the parents and the child. We do not share or sell your family's data.
- Family first. We do not build apps for kids alone; we build them for families to use, talk about, and bond over.
- Real-world connections. Whether it is identifying a leaf or practicing handwriting, our apps must always tie back to the physical world.
- Transparent pricing. No predatory loot boxes or dark patterns. Just simple, affordable lifetime unlocks or clear subscriptions to cover running costs.
Those principles still shape how we think about nature discovery, place-based exploration in guides, and how learning should feel for families using Snappit together.
The Growing Snappit Ecosystem
While the main Snappit app serves as our flagship for nature discovery, we have already mapped out a wider world of auxiliary apps that expand learning into new territories:
- Snap Quiz: Test your knowledge of plant and animal traits with unique trivia. Get it on Google Play.
- Snap Spelling: Master reading and spelling through jumble, dictation, and typing modes.
- Snap Handwriting: Cursive and block practice to turn digital learning into physical skills. Get it on Google Play.
- Snap Memory: A classic card game designed to boost object identification and recall. Get it on Google Play.
- Snap Maps: A geography adventure for learning flags, countries, and capitals.
The Vision: A Seamless Connection
In the future, these will not just be standalone apps. They will be seamlessly connected. When your family captures a photo of a hydrangea in the forest, that exact flower could appear in your child's spelling and handwriting practice the next morning. The same idea also connects naturally to how families browse traits, discover objects in Explore, and revisit what they have learned over time.
We are building a personalized, engaging world where digital discovery fuels real-world education.
