Adlerwarte Berlebeck

Come to Adlerwarte Berlebeck to watch birds of prey fly above the wooded hills and return to their falconers.

About

Come to Adlerwarte Berlebeck to watch birds of prey fly above the wooded hills and return to their falconers. The setting is part of the experience: you climb up from Berlebeck, reach a terrace overlooking the Teutoburg Forest, then settle beside the flying area with plenty of sky to watch. Check the next demonstration time as soon as you arrive and build your visit around it.

Between flights, slow down beside the aviaries and outdoor bird displays. The park's residents include bald eagles, a bateleur, a hooded vulture and a steppe eagle. Looking at a resting bird before seeing the flying programme gives children something concrete to recognise: the shape of a beak, how the feet grip a perch, or the outline of folded wings. The demonstration birds are cared for and trained by the park's falconers; their flights are part of the visitor programme.

There is an easy family rhythm here: birds, demonstration, then a snack and some play. The playground and petting area sit near the snack bar, while picnic tables and benches give you places to stop with your own food. Leave time for the panorama terrace too. A few quiet minutes looking across the trees make a good finish after the movement and commentary of the show. Eager to name that creature? Identify any animal you find during your visit using the Snappit app.

Adlerwarte Berlebeck was founded in 1939 and is now operated by the City of Detmold. Its educational role continues through the Fliegende Zooschule, established in 2019. A timeline installed beside the flight stand in 2022 tells the park's story through photographs, dates and brief explanations.

What to do here

Start with the aviaries, then find a place at the Freiflugtribüne for the approximately 40-minute demonstration. The falconers explain the birds as they fly; watch a whole approach and landing rather than trying to photograph every pass. For a simple family challenge, each person can choose one detail to remember and compare it with a bird seen at rest afterwards.

Continue through the public bird-viewing areas, then take a break by the playground and petting area. Look for the historical timeline beside the flight stand: its photographs and short captions offer a different sort of discovery while everyone catches their breath. Older children who want more than a casual visit can join a prebooked falconer encounter from age 14. School groups can arrange the Fliegende Zooschule or a self-led rally in German or English; these are separate organised activities.

Seasonal info

The last day of the 2026 main season is Sunday 1 November, including that day's flight shows. Reduced winter opening is planned, but the winter timetable has not yet been announced. Heavy rain, storm-force gusts and other extreme weather can stop the demonstrations. Bring a warm layer for sitting outdoors, even when the walk uphill feels warm.

Accessibility

The normal car-park approach has 123 steps. If these are a barrier, call 05231 47171 before travelling to discuss your needs, including pushchair or wheelchair access within the grounds. In exceptional cases, visitors may be dropped off at the entrance via Adlerweg; the vehicle must then return to the Hangsteinstraße car park. Coach groups can request an access shuttle in writing at least two weeks ahead. The park also requires prior agreement for medically necessary walking aids.

Don't miss

1

Free-flight demonstration

Set aside about 40 minutes for the falconers and their birds, with woodland slopes and open sky behind the flying area.

2

Birds at rest

Compare eagles, a bateleur and a hooded vulture at the public bird displays, then watch for familiar shapes in the flying programme.

3

Panorama terrace

Pause above Berlebeck for a view across the Teutoburg Forest, an appealing stop between the aviaries and family activities.

4

Play and picnic break

The playground and petting area are near the snack bar; benches and picnic tables make it easy to bring your own lunch.

Walks and routes

Hangsteinstraße car park to entrance

The ordinary entrance approach climbs 123 steps. Allow longer than the stated five minutes if children need rests.

Use the pre-arranged exceptional drop-off option if the staircase is unsuitable; contact the park first.

Hangsteinstraße car park to entrance

Aviaries, flight stand and family break

Visit some aviaries before the demonstration, return to the bird displays, then finish with the panorama terrace, snack bar and playground. Adjust the order around the next flight.

Discuss your particular mobility needs with the park before committing to the visit.

Things to try

Follow one bird from perch to sky

Choose a labelled bird before the show and sketch its outline. Afterwards, add one detail you noticed during the flying programme, or compare your sketch with another perched bird.

Find a change in the park

At the timeline beside the flight stand, ask children to choose an old photograph and find something that looks different from the park around them.

Keep a weather reserve

Do not build a wet-weather day around the flight shows. Ask whether the educational and information space is available during your visit; organised school sessions need advance arrangement. In severe weather, changing the visit date is the better plan.

Wildlife and habitats

Look for the contrasting head and body, then study the beak and feet while the bird is perched. If a bald eagle joins the demonstration, compare its flying outline with the bird you watched at rest.

The park’s resident bateleur is called Frosch. Find the matching bird label, then compare its proportions with the eagles: choosing one bird to recognise makes the flying commentary easier to follow.

Look for the hooded vulture named Karl-Heinz on the park’s bird information. Compare its head and beak with those of an eagle rather than grouping all the large birds together.

Use the bird label to find the steppe eagle Lisbeth. Take time over the brown plumage and posture at rest, then compare your impression with the different eagles introduced by the falconers.

Save the alpacas for a quieter stop around the playground break. Watch from the visitor area first and let staff instructions and the enclosure signs guide any permitted contact.

Stories and discoveries

Conservation beyond Berlebeck

The team helped develop bird-of-prey projects in Kenya and Ecuador, including Parque Condor. Its conservation work also involves breeding programmes.

Good to know before you go

Time your ticket

Day admission includes the flight demonstrations without a separate reservation and allows same-day re-entry. Keep your ticket and leave enough time to get back uphill.

Arrive by bus

Take line 701 to Adlerwarte, including from Detmold station. For the 2026 season, the Kombiticket sold on buses includes park entry and return bus travel within Detmold city limits.

Use the visitor car park

Set your navigation to Hangsteinstraße, 32760 Detmold. Parking is free; the ordinary climb has 123 steps. Do not use roadside parking or treat Adlerweg as the normal car approach.

Plan access ahead

Call before bringing a wheelchair, pushchair or medically necessary walking aid. Exceptional entrance drop-off and the coach-group shuttle need planning; they do not remove every possible barrier inside.

Eat between flights

Bring a picnic or buy drinks, warm snacks, cake or ice cream at the snack bar. During demonstrations, stop eating and close food securely so birds cannot reach it.

Check the weather

This is mainly an outdoor visit. If heavy rain or strong winds threaten the flying programme, check with the park before setting off rather than relying on indoor activities.

Leave these at home

Dogs and other pets, pull-along wagons, scooters, balance bikes and bicycles are not allowed in the park. Children under 12 must visit with an adult.

Photograph with care

Personal photography is allowed. Keep to visitor paths, follow the falconers’ directions and leave any feathers where they are. Use the petting area’s posted rules for animal contact.

Frequently asked questions

Watch them from the public areas and follow staff instructions. Bird handling belongs to specifically arranged, supervised experiences. The separate petting area has its own rules.
The prebooked Meet & Greet mit dem Falkner is offered from age 14 and lasts one hour. The longer Falknertag is for adults aged 18 and over. Contact the park for dates and prices.
Try the playground and the petting area, where alpacas and Skudde sheep are listed among the residents. Keep the bird-watching stops short and let children pick one detail to look for at the next aviary.
Its work includes breeding programmes and support for bird-of-prey projects in Kenya and Ecuador. The breeding and release facilities shown on the park plan are working animal-care areas; stay on the public visitor paths.
Toilets are listed among the visitor facilities. Ask the park before travel if you need an accessible toilet or baby-changing facilities, so you can plan around the facilities available to you.
