Tiergarten Neustrelitz

Come to Tiergarten Neustrelitz for a woodland walk with animal encounters and plenty of room for children to pause and play.

About

Come to Tiergarten Neustrelitz for a woodland walk with animal encounters and plenty of room for children to pause and play. The park sits close to the town centre, but its trees and spreading enclosures give the visit a much greener rhythm. Start at the entrance building on Am Tiergarten, check which walk-through areas are open and let everyone choose one animal they especially want to see.

Deer are a good place to begin your thinking about the park: fallow deer were kept here when the site was a ducal hunting enclosure. Today they share the visit with red deer, Barbary macaques, lynx, wildcats and domestic animals. These are animals in human care, including those in enclosures visitors may enter. Give them space and let any permitted contact happen on their terms.

The quieter stops can be the most absorbing. A resting lynx is easy to overlook; spend a little time looking into the enclosure before moving on. At the macaques, watch who sits beside whom or whether any grooming is taking place. Children can describe what they actually see rather than trying to make an animal perform for a photograph. Enhance your adventure: download the Snappit app to identify the local species you encounter.

The story begins in 1721 with a fenced, wooded hunting ground for fallow deer. That explains why deer feel so central to a visit here. The historic Hirschtor on the Schlossplatz is a surviving reminder of that earlier setting; use Am Tiergarten 14 for today’s visitor entrance. Looking at the deer adds a living connection to this piece of Neustrelitz’s history.

What to do here

Make the advertised 2.7 km walk through the park the framework for your visit, with breaks for the deer, macaques and whichever smaller animals catch your eye. You do not need to cover every enclosure: for a shorter outing, choose a few stops on arrival and return along open visitor paths when the youngest walkers have had enough. There are sloping sections, so bring comfortable shoes and keep control of pushchairs on descents.

For children aged six and over, ask about the paid Tiergarten-Rallye. Its eight stations combine tasks and collected letters into a final answer, with a prize for completing the challenge; an adult should accompany them. Younger children may prefer the goat petting area and playground. Balance the animal stops with climbing and a go at the animal-themed long-jump activity. Leave room for a snack at the entrance bistro, or finish by letting each child choose a favourite animal and explain one thing they noticed.

Seasonal info

Normal hours are 9: 00–18:00 in summer time and 9:30–16:00 in winter time. The park closes on 24 and 31 December; special events can alter hours. Last admission and walk-through enclosure access end 30 minutes before closing. Check the official visitor information before travelling. In freezing weather, take extra care: paths receive no winter maintenance, and severe weather may close all or part of the park.

Accessibility

The site has step-free access, seating and main paths at least 2 m wide, but some slopes reach 8%. This is not an entirely flat circuit. An accessible toilet and baby-changing room are near the entrance bistro, and designated disabled parking is available. If gradients or a particular enclosure matter for your visit, discuss the route with the team on 03981 4533060. Adapted guided tours require advance booking.

Walks and routes

The 2.7 km animal walk

Use the park’s visitor signs to follow the advertised walk, stopping at the animals that interest your family. Choose fewer enclosures if you want a shorter visit; no fixed sequence is needed.

Discuss a suitable selection of paths and enclosures with staff if gradients are a concern.

Wildlife and habitats

Pause and scan the resting places before deciding the enclosure is empty. If a lynx is visible, look for its ear tufts and short tail without calling to it.

Watch the relationships within the group: who sits close together, who moves away, and whether grooming occurs. Follow the entrance instructions for the walk-through and keep food packed away.

Watch several deer rather than rushing to the nearest one. Compare their coats and the spacing within the group, and leave a clear route for animals to move away.

Compare the animals’ outlines with the fallow deer you have seen. If a stag carries antlers, try a side-on view from the visitor area and let the animal choose its distance.

Spend a quiet minute searching the enclosure. If the cat is visible, compare its silhouette and tail with a familiar pet cat; never tap or call to attract its attention.

Find a comfortable viewing position and look for the owl’s head shape, eyes and hooked beak. A still bird can make a good sketch without needing to change its pose.

Try to frame the whole bird, including its long legs. Watch how its head and body move when it walks, and compare that outline with the smaller birds elsewhere in the park.

Look low down in the bird aviary in summer for “Schildi”, a rescued tortoise living here since 2021. It spends winter dormant in the Erlebnisfarm, so do not plan on a winter sighting.

Good to know before you go

Feeding

Only use food bought at the ticket desk for the specifically permitted fallow deer, Ouessant sheep and pygmy goats. Follow signs and staff directions; never give other food or picked plants.

Animal contact

Stroke animals only in the designated petting area or during an authorised keeper-led encounter. Do not reach through barriers or leave visitor paths.

Family kit

Hire carts are for bags, not passengers. Bring a pushchair if your child may need a ride, and keep children under 14 accompanied by an adult.

Lunch timing

The bistro stops serving hot food an hour before park closing and closes half an hour before the park. Use the toilets near the entrance before setting off.

Photography

Private photography is allowed. Written permission is required for commercial use or passing images to others for reuse; respect other visitors’ privacy.

Tickets

Admission is paid, with child and reduced rates. Bring the relevant proof for concessions, and keep your ticket: single-entry tickets stop being valid when you leave.

Frequently asked questions

Use Am Tiergarten 14, 17235 Neustrelitz. Neustrelitz train and bus station is about 550 m away on foot. There are some free spaces at the main entrance, but these can fill in summer. The alternative public parking area is at Rummelplatz on Bürgerhorststraße, before the railway bridge. Keep neighbouring driveways and side streets clear.
Dogs are admitted for a separate charge and must be held on a short lead by an adult. They cannot enter the playground or walk-through enclosures, even when carried. Plan for members of your party to take turns if you want to enter those areas; ask the team about assistance-dog arrangements.
Arrange these separately in advance; participant numbers are limited and an additional fee applies. The regular booking window is weekday mornings, 9:00–12:00, outside Mecklenburg-Vorpommern school holidays. Holiday programmes sometimes offer other activities, so check the current events page rather than expecting a daily public feeding show.
Choose a shorter animal walk and take a break inside the entrance bistro when it is open. Most of the outing is outdoors, so waterproof layers help more than trying to turn it into a whole indoor day. Save the playground for better conditions and follow any weather-related closure instructions.
