Wild- und Freizeitpark Willingen

Come to Wild- und Freizeitpark Willingen for a woodland animal walk that leaves room for fairytales, dinosaur models and a little fairground fun.

About

Come to Wild- und Freizeitpark Willingen for a woodland animal walk that leaves room for fairytales, dinosaur models and a little fairground fun. The park sits on the Ettelsberg hillside above Willingen. At the entrance, ask which bird programmes are running that day and choose one to build your visit around; that leaves the rest of your time free for a slower look at the animals.

Brown bears, Barbary macaques and several kinds of deer make rewarding stops. These are animals kept in a wildlife park, so you can look for them at their enclosures rather than searching the surrounding forest. Wild boar and wildcats add to the woodland theme, while parrots bring a different set of colours and calls.

There is plenty to interest children who want to switch between watching and doing. Fairytale displays, play equipment and rides break up the animal stops. In the spruce woodland, life-size dinosaur models give a sense of prehistoric scale. Make the distinction part of the fun: which things here are living animals, and which have been made to tell a story? What to do here

Choose a few animals to watch properly before moving on to the entertainment. At the deer, compare the animals’ size, coat and, where present, antlers. The park keeps red, fallow and sika deer, so the enclosure labels make this a useful identification exercise. Let each child describe one animal without naming it and see whether the others can find the same one.

Spend a quiet few minutes at the bears or Barbary macaques. Follow what one animal is doing rather than trying to get every animal into a photograph. Resting, moving through the enclosure and interacting with companions can all be worth noticing. If a favourite is out of sight, leave time to return later.

A bird-of-prey, owl or parrot programme adds another kind of encounter. Choose by the day’s actual schedule, and keep listening time and children’s energy in mind. Afterwards, make a separate stop at the dinosaur models or fairytale displays, with a playground or ride break if your group wants one. Ask at the ticket desk for a route that connects your chosen stops without more walking than your group will enjoy.

Seasonal info

The wildlife park opens year-round, but check current admission times and which shows and rides are operating before setting out, especially in winter. Much of the visit is outdoors in woodland. Bring shoes with grip and a waterproof layer; in prolonged rain, shorten the walk rather than relying on the attractions to provide a full indoor day.

Accessibility

Pushchairs are welcome, but plan for a woodland visit on the Ettelsberg hillside. If you use a wheelchair, have limited walking endurance or need a reliably step-free route, phone 05632 69198 before travelling. Ask about the surfaces and gradients between your chosen enclosures, the show entrances and suitable toilets. At the ticket desk, agree a manageable route rather than assuming that every part of the park will suit you.

Don't miss

1

Deer comparisons

Look for red, fallow and sika deer and use the signs to work out how they differ.

2

Bear and macaque stops

Give these enclosures enough time for observation, even when the animals are resting.

3

Bird programmes

Choose a bird-of-prey, owl or parrot presentation from the day’s programme.

4

Stories among the trees

Break up the animal walk with fairytale scenes and life-size dinosaur models.

Wildlife and habitats

Watch from the public viewing area and give the bear time. If it moves, follow the shape of its body and the way its paws meet the ground; a quiet pause can reveal more than a quick photograph.

Pick one macaque to follow with your eyes. Notice where it chooses to sit and how close it stays to other animals. Keep food and fingers away from the enclosure barriers.

Look for the Rotwild or Rothirsch sign, then compare these deer with the fallow and sika deer. Describe size and coat before using antlers as a clue, since not every animal will have them.

Use the Damwild or Damhirsch label to identify the group. Look closely at the coats and compare individuals rather than assuming that every deer of the same species looks identical.

Find the Sikawild label before photographing your subject. Compare its outline with the other deer you have seen, and note the sign as well as the animal so you can identify the picture later.

Watch the ground as well as the whole enclosure. If a boar is exploring, notice how it uses its snout. Keep watching from the public path without trying to attract the animals with food.

Good to know before you go

Set a small wish list

Let everyone choose one animal or attraction before you arrive. It makes a shorter visit easier to shape without rushing past everything.

Keep the animal stops calm

Stay on visitor paths, respect barriers and give the animals space. Keep your own snacks for your family and follow the enclosure signs.

Before buying tickets

Check the current tariff and ask which attractions are available and what your ticket covers. Seasonal programmes can make a different visit from the one you had in mind.

Photograph the details

Try one picture of an animal and one of the feature you noticed, such as a coat pattern or antler shape. Review them together after leaving the enclosure.

Frequently asked questions

Use Am Ettelsberg 2, 34508 Willingen (Upland), for the park. Visitor parking is available. Leave time to reach the entrance and orient yourself before a bird programme rather than arriving at its advertised start time.
Take the train to Willingen (Upland). Check the onward journey to Am Ettelsberg 2 separately, including any local bus or pre-booked shared-taxi option and your return connection. Allow extra time for the final journey from the station to the hillside entrance.
Dogs may accompany you on a lead, but cannot join the animal shows, rides or petting enclosure. If those are important parts of your day, plan for an adult to stay with the dog outside those areas.
There is a snack outlet by the entrance serving meals, snacks and drinks. Check its opening on arrival if you want to make lunch part of the visit, and carry water for the walk.
