Tierpark Luckenwalde

Come to Tierpark Luckenwalde for a relaxed animal-watching outing where an Australian aviary and a growing South American section fit into a small, leafy city park.

About

Come to Tierpark Luckenwalde for a relaxed animal-watching outing where an Australian aviary and a growing South American section fit into a small, leafy city park. Enter from Ackerstraße, find the playground just beyond the entrance, and choose a few animals to spend time with before setting off around the enclosures. Flowerbeds and individually decorated benches make it easy to pause between stops.

The walk-through Australia aviary is a good first destination: budgerigars, diamond doves, masked lapwings and Silkie chickens share this area. Elsewhere, look for Japanese macaques, tiny harvest mice and the vicuñas and maras in the South American section. The Arche Park area adds domestic breeds, including Brillenschaf sheep, saddleback pigs and Cröllwitzer turkeys. It gives children plenty to compare, from the birds' different movements to the shapes and sizes of the mammals.

The animal collection has changed substantially. Bears, meerkats and wild boar shown in older descriptions are no longer here. Enjoy the animals present on the day and allow time to return to an enclosure if its residents are out of sight. Eager to name that creature? Identify any animal you find during your visit using the Snappit app.

The zoo began on 26 August 1956, when the first ducks were introduced to the Stadtpark pond. It celebrated its 70th birthday in 2026. Its recent redevelopment follows the “Tiere hautnah” concept, with modernised enclosures and a walk-through aviary. LUBA GmbH has operated the park since July 2020, supported by the city and the local friends association.

What to do here

Make the Australia aviary a slow stop. Watch first, then ask children to spot one bird on the ground and another using a perch. Compare how they move and where they choose to rest, without chasing them or trying to attract their attention.

Continue to the South American animals and compare the maras with the neighbouring vicuñas. Vicuñas are the smallest living camels, with dense coats adapted to cold mountain conditions. In the domestic-animal area, pick a sheep, a pig and a turkey and look for differences in coats, feet and posture. The small harvest-mouse display rewards a patient second look. Finish with the playground, or let each child choose one favourite enclosure to revisit. This is a flexible order of stops; follow the open visitor paths and signs on the day.

Seasonal info

In winter, arrive early enough for the shorter opening day and bring warm layers for watching animals outdoors. For persistent rain, choose a shorter visit rather than relying on indoor attractions. Work on a new events area for a future synthetic skating rink began in September 2026; check current notices for access changes and any separately announced winter programme.

Accessibility

Entry is step-free, and level visitor paths combine firm sand with fine paving. A wheelchair-accessible toilet is listed, with a 94 cm doorway and Euro-key access. There is no designated disabled parking space in the published access information. Because paths and facilities are being renewed, phone 03371 610373 to check the current step-free circuit, toilet access and any assistance you need.

Wildlife and habitats

Look for the vicuñas in the South American section. Compare their outline with the neighbouring maras and take a photograph that shows the whole animal.

The maras arrived in 2026. Watch from the path and compare how they stand, sit and move; give the group space when animals gather near the barrier.

Pause in the Australia aviary and watch the budgerigars change perches. Try following one bird with your eyes before attempting a photograph.

Look for diamond doves in the same aviary. Compare their movements and resting places with the budgerigars instead of relying on colour alone.

Include the lower parts of the aviary in your search for masked lapwings. Let any bird using the visitor path pass without following it.

At the macaques, watch quietly for a change in activity. A seated animal can be as interesting to study as one moving through the enclosure.

Slow down at the harvest-mouse display and scan carefully before moving on. If none is visible, choose another stop and return later.

Look for the satyr tragopan, a species added in spring 2026. Use the enclosure label to identify the bird rather than assuming every pheasant looks alike.

Find the Griechische Landschildkröte label for Hermann’s tortoise. Observe from outside the enclosure and leave any animal resting in shelter undisturbed.

The Greek tortoise is labelled Maurische Landschildkröte in German. Read the label carefully so that you do not confuse it with Hermann’s tortoise.
