Muui-do National Recreation Forest

The pleasure here is the pairing of a wooded hillside with open coastal scenery.

About

The pleasure here is the pairing of a wooded hillside with open coastal scenery. It suits a short, unhurried outing better than a packed island hiking circuit. Start at the visitor information centre and choose an open forest path that fits your energy and the weather. The recreation forest has its own entrance and rules: coastal walking access from the forest is prohibited. Hanaegae Beach, the island’s sea boardwalk and mountain trails need separate access and planning. Turn your visit into a safari! Use the Snappit app to scan and log wildlife sightings here.

The forest opened in July 2022 as Incheon’s first national recreation forest. The city’s opening announcement described a 137-hectare site with visitor facilities and walking paths. It remains a distinct managed destination within Muui-do, rather than the name of the whole island.

What to do here

Walk the signed paths open to day visitors, pause for sea views where permitted, or arrange a forest-interpretation session. Families can make the programme the main event; overnight guests can leave more time for a quiet morning rather than trying to cover the whole island.

Seasonal info

In warm weather, bring drinking water, sun protection and insect repellent. After rain, shorten the walk if surfaces are slippery. In winter, favour the middle of the day and check for ice and wind before setting out. Sea views depend on visibility, so leave room for a forest-focused visit when haze rolls in.

Accessibility

Do not assume the forest paths are step-free. A continuous wheelchair-suitable route, gradients, surface condition and accessible toilet access have not been confirmed. Before travelling, call 032-751-0426 with your particular mobility needs and ask for the easiest currently open route from the entrance.

Walks and routes

A relaxed morning visit

Arrive after the day opening time and begin with the information centre. Pick an open path with an uncomplicated return, take a sea-view break if visibility is good, and head back while everyone still has energy. With children, leave generous time for the return instead of promising a particular distance. If a confirmed nature session is your priority, build the walk around its meeting time and location.

An overnight forest break

Before leaving home, check the exact room, capacity, payment status and arrival instructions. Aim to reach the forest with daylight to spare, settle in, and take only a short approved walk on arrival day. Keep the following morning flexible for a stroll or confirmed programme before departure. Quiet hours run from 22:00 to 07:00, which makes this a better choice for a restful evening than a late outdoor gathering.

Things to try

Choose a forest walk at the entrance

Ask the information centre which walking sections are open and suitable for your party, then follow the on-site signs. A short out-and-back on an approved section is a good choice if you want an easy turnaround. Avoid treating a cabin access road, a line on an island hiking map or a visible track beyond a barrier as a visitor route.

Book a nature session that fits your group

The programme catalogue includes a one-hour activity for young children about small living things, 90-minute primary-school sessions about insects or seeds, and longer sessions for older pupils. These listed activities are free and typically take small groups. Ask which session is running, whether individual visitors can join, how to reserve, and what language is available. For 2026, interpretation resumed on 27 March and was expected to continue into November. Confirm the end date and session availability before making a special trip.

Make photography a gentle stop

From a permitted open viewpoint, let the trees frame the water rather than looking for a way down to the shore. Keep space for walkers when you stop, avoid photographing into occupied cabins, and put the camera away if wind or rain makes footing uncertain. If you want evening light, check the day-visitor exit time first; a sunset plan should not depend on remaining after closing.

Keep a wet-day plan flexible

If a programme has been confirmed, ask whether it continues in rain and where to meet. Otherwise, postpone a day visit when the outdoor experience would be uncomfortable or unsafe. A booked cabin can provide a slower day indoors, but do not assume there is a public indoor attraction, open workshop or café available as a walk-in substitute.

Stories and discoveries

Island names appear in the accommodation

Forest houses carry names such as Muui-do, Gulup-do and Deokjeok-do, while the attached-unit rooms use numbers. They are accommodation names within this forest. Choosing a room named after an island does not mean the booking is on that other island.

When to visit

Match the plan to the conditions

A pleasant forecast matters more than choosing a particular month. In hot weather, keep the walk short and take breaks; in cold or windy weather, bring a warm layer and avoid lingering where you feel exposed. After heavy rain, strong winds or snow, check the latest operating notice before making the journey. Staff may restrict access for safety even when an accommodation reservation has been made.

Getting there and practical advice

Day-entry costs

The national-forest fee schedule linked by Muui-do lists individual admission of KRW 1,000 for adults, KRW 600 for teenagers and KRW 300 for children. Standard small/medium-vehicle parking is KRW 3,000 per day; other vehicle classes and concessions differ. The schedule also lists a December–March admission exemption. Check your party’s eligibility and the charge for your date at the entrance, and do not assume a free-admission period also removes the parking fee.

Choosing and reserving a room

Choose between six-person forest houses and five-person rooms in the attached accommodation blocks. Use the official room list to compare the actual accommodation. Published examples are KRW 75,000 off-peak weekday / KRW 134,000 peak or weekend for six-person forest houses, and KRW 58,000 / KRW 106,000 for five-person attached units. Confirm the selected room’s live tariff, amenities and access before paying.

Understanding the booking calendar

Ordinary accommodation bookings generally open at 09:00 on Wednesdays under the six-week policy. Weekend and peak-season stays use separate allocation arrangements, so an unavailable date does not necessarily mean the forest is closed. Read the reservation policy and the date-specific notices before choosing. Complete payment by the deadline shown in your account, and check cancellation charges before committing to transport.

What overnight guests should bring

Posted check-in is 15:00–22:00 and checkout is by 11:00. Bring the reservation holder’s identification, towels and toiletries. If somebody else will check in, obtain the operator’s current document requirements in advance. Capacity limits matter even for visiting companions. Firewood, charcoal, barbecues and recreational fires are prohibited year-round; do not pack an outdoor cooking setup on the assumption that a cabin includes a barbecue area.

Arriving by road

Navigate to 국립무의도자연휴양림, 74 Hanaegae-ro, rather than to a beach car park. The official driving directions approach through the Muui Bridge and the road toward Hanaegae, then turn into the forest. No ferry is needed for this road approach. Leave extra time for island traffic and locate the forest entrance before unloading; the nearest-looking beach entrance is not a substitute.

Planning a public-transport visit

Use the operator’s directions as a starting point, then confirm the current bus connection and your return before setting out. The page refers to Yongyu and Hanaegae Beach stops, but retains older transport wording, so do not rely on it alone for a timetable or route number. Ask the forest about the authorised final approach from your stop, especially if you have luggage or limited mobility. An airport-area rail station is not a walk-up forest entrance.

Ask about the whole arrival-to-walk journey

For wheelchair use, a pushchair or limited stamina, ask about the distance from the parking or drop-off point to the information centre, steps, slopes, rest opportunities and toilet access. If staying overnight, verify the exact room entrance, bed arrangement and bathroom layout. A room’s priority-reservation category does not establish that every path or facility can meet your needs. Choose a short returnable section only after the staff have confirmed it is suitable.

Good to know before you go

Use the current address

74 Hanaegae-ro, Yeongjong-gu, Incheon. Older listings may still say Jung-gu.

Check the latest notice before departure, especially around Tuesdays, public holidays and severe weather.

Bring shoes with grip and a light windproof layer; adjust your plan to conditions rather than chasing a viewpoint.

Keep to authorised paths and leave cabin terraces and room entrances to their guests.

Pack water and food you will need rather than relying on an unconfirmed on-site shop or restaurant.

Frequently asked questions

The operator lists daytime opening from 09:00 to 18:00 separately from accommodation. A room booking is for the overnight stay; it is not the same as arranging a day visit or programme. Confirm day-entry arrangements and any temporary limits with the forest before travelling, particularly for a group.
Tuesday is the normal weekly closure. The accommodation policy includes exceptions when Tuesday or Wednesday is a public holiday. Check your actual date in the current notices and booking calendar, and confirm day access separately rather than assuming a holiday exception applies to every activity.
No. The forest’s visitor notice prohibits coastal foot access. Do not use a gap, shoreline route or informal track to reach Hanaegae Beach or the sea boardwalk.
Pets are not admitted under the forest’s posted rule. The official booking-policy table lists no campground at Muui-do, so plan a cabin stay or a day visit rather than arriving with a tent or campervan expecting a pitch.
