Nokami Fureai Park

Nokami Fureai Park is the sort of place where the best plan leaves some space.

About

Nokami Fureai Park is the sort of place where the best plan leaves some space. Children can choose an adventure, someone can settle down with a picnic, and the rest of the group can enjoy the open hillside setting. Its main lawn is about 10,000 square metres, large enough to feel like a destination in its own right rather than a gap between attractions.

The lawns, Wanpaku Plaza playground, park-golf courses, barbecue sites and auto-campground belong to one municipal park in Kimino, Wakayama. They offer different ways to spend the same day: an inexpensive play-and-picnic visit, a sociable game, or an outdoor meal planned in advance. You do not need a camping reservation simply to enjoy the free lawn and play areas.

Start near Fureai-kan and the main parking area, check the day's signs, and choose your priority before unpacking. The official illustrated map is useful for understanding how the facilities fit together. Treat it as orientation rather than a measured walking route. The separate Wakayama Prefectural Animal Welfare Center is next door, so any visit there needs its own checks.

Bring the food you want to eat. Older descriptions still mention a produce shop and café, but the town now records both as closed. Likewise, the familiar photograph of the castle playground does not promise that every section is usable: the town continues to restrict some equipment for safety. Enhance your adventure: download the Snappit app to identify the local species you encounter.

The park opened in July 2000. Its north and south park-golf courses were added in July 2003, according to the town assembly record. The park keeps the former Nogami-area name within present-day Kimino.

What to do here

Pair a picnic on the lawn with the available playground equipment and a look at the hillside views. Choose park golf or a booked barbecue as an optional main activity rather than trying to do everything.

Seasonal info

Summer calls for water and shade breaks. Winter visits need warmer layers and a check for icy conditions; overnight camping is unavailable in January and February.

Accessibility

The prefecture confirms accessible parking and wheelchair toilets. The map does not establish a continuous step-free route to every attraction; ask the office about the exact facilities and surfaces you need.

Walks and routes

A gentle first visit

Start at Fureai-kan to orient yourself, walk to the lawn, and add the open playground sections if wanted. Return when the group is ready rather than completing a prescribed circuit. Allow about 1½–2 hours including breaks; this is an editorial outing idea with no measured distance or ascent.

A play-and-picnic half day

Bring an early lunch, enjoy the playground while attention and energy are fresh, and use the lawn for the quieter part of the visit. Add a view stop if the weather cooperates. Allow about 3 hours at your own pace. A simple plan leaves room to change direction if equipment is closed or the day grows hot.

A golf-led outing

Check course availability before travelling, pay at the golf booth and begin with an 18-hole round. Add another only if everyone is comfortable and there is time. Leave room for a picnic afterwards. Half a day is an editorial allowance for the combined outing, not a promised golf round duration.

Things to try

Make a tiny landscape notebook

Ask each person to draw one nearby shape and one distant shape: a play tower and a ridge, for example. Compare the sketches during a picnic break. This is a suggested family activity, not a staffed programme, and works without collecting plants or approaching wildlife.

Take a blossom pause

In spring, let the cherry trees add a stop to an otherwise ordinary park day. Look at blossom clusters from the path, compare colours and photograph without pulling branches. Exact cultivars are not established here, and neither a calendar nor an old photograph guarantees flowers on your date.

Wildlife and habitats

Flowering cherries

Cultivated cherry trees are a highlight in spring. The prefectural tourism site describes blossoms in several parts of the park, usually from late March into early April. Enjoy them as flowering cherries without assuming a named species or cultivar. Look from paths and do not pick blossoms.

Stories and discoveries

The lawn: the easy centre of the day

The wide central grass area invites a slower pace. Spread a picnic on a groundsheet, leave space around other groups, and decide whether the next hour should involve movement or doing very little. An outdoor stage stands at the edge; an event can change the atmosphere and usable space. The lawn is for day use, with camping and flames excluded.

Adventure Noadi Castle

Wanpaku Plaza’s castle-like combination structure is the park’s memorable play landmark. The published design includes slides, suspension bridges and climbing elements, with a lookout nearby. Choose only open equipment suited to your child’s ability, and supervise changes between levels. A rest in an azumaya shelter gives everyone a breather without needing to leave the play outing.

A game across the green

The park-golf complex has 36 holes, shown on the map as east, west, north and south courses. Park golf uses one club and a ball, making it an approachable activity to learn together. Begin at the fee booth, ask about the available courses and keep a safe distance from players taking a swing. This is a paid playing area rather than a shortcut for a casual walk.

Fureai-kan and the view

Fureai-kan is the practical landmark by the entrance area and houses the park office. The town describes a terrace looking towards the Izumi Mountains. Look for a comfortable pause when it is available, but plan food independently of the building’s former café. A distant ridge can be a good subject for a quick sketch even when the weather is too hazy for a sharp photograph.

Camping and barbecue areas

The campground has 21 pitches of about 120 square metres each, including parking space, with AC electricity. Shared cooking, flush-toilet, shower and laundry facilities support a longer stay; this is still bring-your-own-equipment camping. The separate barbecue area offers another way to make a meal the centre of the visit without staying overnight.

A park that grew with its golfers

The park’s July 2000 opening preceded the July 2003 addition of the north and south golf courses. The four-course layout on today’s brochure therefore reflects an expansion of the early park.

One club, a whole new game

The town’s brochure describes park golf as a simplified golf-style sport developed in Hokkaido in 1983. Its single-club format is a useful invitation for a mixed-experience group, though everyone still needs to learn safe spacing and course etiquette.

When to visit

Spring

Late March to early April is the usual cherry-blossom window given by the official tourism site. Treat it as a planning clue, check conditions near your visit and come prepared for an ordinary picnic even if flowers are early or late.

Summer and autumn

The open lawn makes shade planning important in hot weather: take hats, water and regular rests, and shorten the outing when needed. In autumn, cooler conditions can suit a golf-and-picnic day. Neither season supplies a guarantee about temperature, foliage colour or individual course availability.

Winter

Keep a daytime outing flexible around cold, wind and possible ice. The town excludes overnight campsite reservations in January and February because of freezing conditions. A winter camping restriction is not a statement that the whole park closes for those months.

Getting there and practical advice

Getting here

Use 971-1 Nishino, Kimino, Kaiso District, Wakayama 640-1252 as the park address. Official tourism guidance gives about 30 minutes by car from Kainan-Higashi IC or Wakayama-Minami Smart IC, depending on conditions. The brochure also gives roughly 30 minutes by car from JR Kainan Station via the signed road approach. Parking is free. For a rail-based visit, arrange a taxi or other final connection and your return before setting out.

Free areas, paid activities

Ordinary admission, the lawn, playground and parking are free. Overnight camping costs ¥3,140 per pitch plus ¥620 per adult and ¥410 per child per night; the published child category is age 4 through junior high school. Showers cost ¥200 per use; laundry and dryer are ¥100 each per use. Day camping and the separate barbecue sites cost ¥2,090 per plot plus ¥100 per adult or child. Confirm how your party is counted when reserving.

Park-golf fees and hours

One round is 18 holes. Standard nonresident fees are ¥700 for adults, ¥500 for people aged 65 or over and the listed disability category, and ¥200 for children aged 4 through junior high school. Club-and-ball rental is ¥50 per round. Resident discounts require proof. The linked fee sheet and ordinance list 08:00–17:00 in April–September and 09:00–17:00 in October–March, with reception by 15:00. The main page simplifies this to 09:00–17:00, so confirm an early summer start with the office. Groups need advance arrangements.

Opening-day checks

Plan an ordinary visit within 09:00–17:00, the published office hours and a practical window across the main services. Tuesday is the regular closed day; when it is a public holiday, closure moves to the next day. The ordinance also closes the park from 29 December through 3 January. The tourism listing advertises longer summer park hours, but these do not extend every facility’s operation. Confirm before relying on early or late access.

How to arrange camping or a barbecue

Overnight camping reservations open at 09:00 on the first day two months before the stay month, or the next open day if that is a closure day. Call 073-489-5300 first to check availability; then complete the official form as directed. The automatic email is not the final confirmation: wait for the park’s email with your site number and instructions. Check in between 13:00 and 15:00, and leave by 11:00. Pay in cash at Fureai-kan on arrival. Changes and cancellations are handled by telephone; the booking page states no customer cancellation fee. Weather may still force the park to cancel operations. Day-camp requests begin five days ahead and depend on overnight-booking availability. Barbecues run 10:00–17:00 and need their own reservation; bring food, fuel and utensils rather than expecting a fully supplied meal.

What to bring and where to pause

The official map marks toilets near the main building, lawn-side facilities and golf/camping areas; it does not establish that every toilet is open to every visitor at all times. Bring a picnic mat, drinking water, sun or rain protection and a rubbish bag. The brochure asks you to take all rubbish home. Keep the office phone number and booking confirmation available without relying on public Wi-Fi.

Plan around your own access needs

Wakayama Prefecture’s April 2024 introduction confirms accessible parking and wheelchair toilets. Their presence does not establish the slope, surface or step-free approach to the playground lookout, terrace, golf courses or individual pitches. Before travelling, ask the office which parking space and toilet to use, how to reach your chosen area, and whether help or equipment is available. Mobility-aid hire, nursing rooms and changing facilities were not verified.

Keep the day comfortable and the grass safe

Respect playground closures and keep clear of golfers’ swings. Do not use flames, gas stoves or fireworks on the lawn. The campground also prohibits direct ground fires, wood-fuelled campfires and fireworks; ask staff to confirm the permitted raised charcoal barbecue setup. The town carries a tick warning and a September 2023 report of a suspected redback spider near the sandpit. Do not handle unfamiliar spiders or reach blindly into hidden spaces; tell staff if you notice a concern. These notices are precautions, not evidence of a new sighting on your visit. Stay out of closed areas and leave plants in place.

Visitor information

Check the playground before promising a particular slide

Checked on 20 October 2026: the town still says some Wanpaku Plaza equipment is restricted for safety, without naming every affected piece or a reopening date. On-site notices take priority.

Park-golf closure: 18–19 November 2026

All park-golf courses are closed to ordinary visitors on these two dates for an international tournament. The notice applies to golf, not a stated whole-park closure. Recheck arrangements if travelling around the event.

Bring lunch and save your information offline

The produce shop closed on 31 August 2025 and the snack corner on 31 March 2026. The former free Wi-Fi service ended on 31 March 2025. These specific notices supersede older visitor descriptions.

For park-golf or campsite questions, call the park office on 073-489-5300. Check the date as well as the time: Tuesday is the usual closed day.

Frequently asked questions

Do not assume so. The town still lists restrictions on some equipment. Follow barriers and age guidance, and let the usable sections determine your visit.
The official tourism site permits leashed dog walks. Keep your dog close around children and other visitors, clean up afterwards, and check separately before booking camping or entering paid facilities with a pet.
The lawn is not a camping area, and all fire use there is prohibited. Use the designated reserved facilities, and ask staff before erecting any shelter.
Yes. The park does not lend camping equipment. Confirm your pitch, electrical needs and cooking equipment before packing.
Check current transport with the park before travelling. If arriving by rail, arrange the final journey and return in advance.
It is a separate neighbouring prefectural facility. Its opening arrangements and activities are independent of your park-golf, barbecue or camping booking.
