Vila Velha State Park

Outside Ponta Grossa in Paraná, Vila Velha is a landscape to explore slowly rather than a single roadside photograph.

About

Outside Ponta Grossa in Paraná, Vila Velha is a landscape to explore slowly rather than a single roadside photograph. Its three essential experiences are the Arenitos sandstone formations, the Furnas sinkholes and Lagoa Dourada. They belong to one state park, but occupy distinct visitor areas. Plan around the park’s internal transport and the walks at each stop, not a continuous stroll from the entrance to every attraction.

At the sandstone formations, the appeal is partly imaginative. A changing angle can turn an outline into a familiar object, while a closer look reveals layers, hollows and contrasting surfaces. The operator explains that ancient sand became rock through compaction and cementation, with iron-rich cement contributing its pinkish colour and uneven resistance to erosion. These are natural formations, not carved monuments or the ruins of a built city.

The Furnas offer a very different perspective: instead of looking up at a freestanding rock, you look down into steep-sided cavities. The operator identifies the two visitor attractions as Furna dos Andorinhões and Furna dos Lambaris, with walls reaching depths of up to 100 metres. That figure describes the geological feature, not a visitor descent or the elevation gain of a trail. Treat the viewpoints as the experience; do not plan to enter the cavities.

Lagoa Dourada softens the day with reflections and a more patient kind of looking. The operator describes it as a sediment-filled furna connected to the others by underground water. Its name means Golden Lagoon, but it is not a guarantee of a golden surface whenever you arrive. Light, weather and water conditions matter. Look for movement below the surface without feeding fish or stepping beyond the permitted viewing area. Eager to name that creature? What to do here

Make the sandstone walk your anchor, then add the Furnas and Lagoa Dourada if open. At the entrance, ask which order fits the day’s transport departures. Keep optional adventure activities separate from the basic landscape visit so a timed booking does not force you to hurry every other stop.

Seasonal info

Vila Velha has cooler winters and rain throughout the year. IAT’s general climate guidance favours April–August for fewer rainy outings than midsummer. Use that as a broad tendency, not a forecast; a clear winter morning can still call for a warm layer.

Accessibility

Ask about the exact route and vehicle before buying. Paved paths do not by themselves establish step-free access, manageable slopes or an accessible bus. A shorter sandstone option may reduce walking, but its suitability still depends on the individual visitor and the day’s arrangements.

Walks and routes

Sandstone and woodland

IAT lists the full Arenitos e Bosque trail as 2,671 metres, about two hours, with a moderate rating. A shorter sandstone option is listed at 1,100 metres and about 40 minutes. Confirm which options are available, then choose one rather than adding every published alternative together.

Furnas viewpoints

IAT describes a 500-metre circular walk and an indicative one hour. The short distance leaves room for looking and interpretation; it is not a descent into a sinkhole. Stay behind the viewpoint barriers and keep children close while stopping for photographs.

Lagoa Dourada approach

IAT lists a 400-metre linear trail and about 40 minutes. It does not clearly say whether that distance includes the return, so do not treat it as a measured round trip. The operator closes the attraction when overflow makes the approach unsafe; ask about this stop before boarding transport.

Things to try

A landscape photography walk

Work with the permitted viewpoint rather than seeking a more dramatic position beyond the barriers. Try one broad composition and one detail of rock texture, then put the camera away long enough to notice the scale. The supplied archival photograph illustrates sandstone scenery, not today’s access or weather.

Birdwatching with a different pace

The park advertises a small-group Birdwatching Experience through mixed forest and southern grassland. Its reported inventory exceeds 230 bird species, but no individual outing will reproduce an inventory. Ask about dates, start time, equipment and price, and choose quiet observation over chasing a particular bird.

An optional adventure

Tree-top courses, a zipline, cycling and night walks appear in the park’s activity programme. Check availability, separate charges, participant restrictions and cancellation conditions before committing. Looking at a Furna from a public viewpoint does not require buying an adventure experience.

Stories and discoveries

Established in 1953, Vila Velha was Paraná’s first state park. Its value is not confined to spectacular rocks: the surrounding habitats are part of the protected landscape.

The sandstone story has two timescales. Ancient sediments became rock; later weathering and erosion shaped what visitors see. A statement about hundreds of millions of years should not be mistaken for the exact age of a particular pillar’s present outline.

Lagoa Dourada and the dramatic Furnas are related landforms rather than unrelated scenic stops. Thinking about hidden water connections makes the contrast between a broad lake and a steep-sided cavity more interesting.

Getting there and practical advice

IAT lists Princesa dos Campos services from Curitiba and Viação Campos Gerais from Ponta Grossa passing the park. This guide does not verify current departures, fares or stopping arrangements. Confirm the exact stop and return service with the carrier, including safe access to the entrance; do not improvise a highway crossing.

Request practical details: accessible parking and toilets, the vehicle boarding method, steps and gradients on the chosen walk, resting places, and whether a wheelchair or stroller can complete that route. Explain what assistance is useful without assuming staff can provide lifting or equipment. For sensory needs, ask about quieter periods and the briefing format. Confirm the whole sequence from arrival to return, not only a single viewpoint.

The operator lists toilets at the visitor centre and at the Furnas and Lagoa Dourada entrances, a restaurant, snack outlets, shops and Wi-Fi at several visitor points. Check outlet hours on the day. Its parking page lists R$30 for a car or motorcycle, R$48 for a van or minibus and R$68 for a bus, per day, checked 22 October 2026. Parking is a separate charge to verify, not a per-person admission rate.

Remain on marked paths, respect barriers and never climb, lean on, scratch or take pieces of the sandstone. Do not feed wildlife, remove plants, smoke or leave litter. Pause for photographs where the route permits, keeping space for other visitors. If staff close a trail or weather changes materially, accept a shorter visit. The lagoon is a viewing stop, not an invitation to enter the water, and the Furnas are not self-directed climbing destinations.

Good to know before you go

Wear comfortable closed shoes with reliable grip, and bring sun protection, insect repellent and a layer for changing conditions. Sort out drinking water before departing the visitor centre, especially if travelling with children or anyone with particular needs.

Save your ticket and the park’s return-transport information offline. Take a photograph of any posted departure timetable on arrival; do not rely on an old blog’s bus interval. Plan a margin between the final park transfer and your onward transport.

For a satisfying family outing, give everyone a simple mission: choose a rock silhouette, describe its texture without touching it, then compare the colour of the lagoon with the sky. Let the slowest walker set the pace rather than turning the visit into a checklist.

Frequently asked questions

The government service page lists 09:00–17:00, normally Wednesday to Monday, with ticketing and entry ending at 15:00. Check a Tuesday or holiday directly: the operator’s homepage has conflicting wording. A published schedule is not confirmation that every attraction is open today.
IAT’s notice of 9 October 2026 gives regular admission as R$148 full price, R$74 half price and R$65 for Ponta Grossa residents. Verify eligibility, documents and your date’s price in the official ticket shop. Its short October promotions have expired; do not budget around those offers.
Do not treat an entry ticket as an all-activities pass. The full-visit product has historically bundled the three main natural attractions with internal transfers, but check the current product’s exact inclusions. Parking, meals, adventure activities and transport from Curitiba or Ponta Grossa are separate budget questions.
The operator prohibits outside food and drinks, with exceptions for babies and restrictive diets; older IAT guidance differs. Confirm drinking-water arrangements and any dietary exception before travel rather than relying on a picnic. Ordinary pets are prohibited. Ask specifically about assistance-animal arrangements if relevant.
The operator records biscutate swifts (Streptoprocne biscutata) at Furna dos Andorinhões and highlights dawn and dusk flights. Sightings are not guaranteed, and ordinary daytime admission does not authorize arriving before opening or staying after closing. Ask about an appropriate scheduled experience.
The government service page requires advance scheduling for groups of 15 or more. Agree the arrival time, ticket category, activity choices and any access needs before arranging a coach. A separate commercial excursion is not automatically the same as the park’s group reservation.
