Areias: Circuito das Lagoas or Mirante do Bem
ICMBio’s route menu lists the lakes area at 2 km one way and 4 km round trip, and the viewpoint at 2.2 km one way and 4.4 km round trip; both receive a low difficulty rating.

The park protects roughly 31,640 hectares and was created in 1984. Its landscape brings together Cerrado, rocky grasslands known as campos rupestres, and forest habitats. Rather than trying to collect every waterfall in one day, choose one entrance and an outing that fits your least experienced companion. A shorter walk with time to notice flowers, birds and rock textures can be more satisfying than a hurried race to a distant pool.
Think of the visit as two decisions: which landscape you want to explore, and how much walking you can comfortably repeat on the way back. Areias serves the Mascates valley; Retiro serves the Bocaina valley. Highland routes around Alto Palácio require a different plan. These are not interchangeable gates into a compact attraction. The wider destination also contains independently managed waterfalls, so a booking labelled “Serra do Cipó” does not necessarily include this national park. Eager to name that creature? Identify any animal you find during your visit using the Snappit app.
Choose a short valley outing, devote a day to Farofa or a Retiro waterfall, or prepare an authorized multi-day traverse. Photograph plants from the path, watch quietly for wildlife, and make swimming conditional on permission and conditions rather than the purpose on which the whole day depends.
Rain, river levels, smoke and visibility matter more than a month printed in an itinerary. Have a shorter alternative and be willing to postpone. Flowers vary through the year; there is no single guaranteed display date.
Do not equate a low difficulty rating with wheelchair access. Terrain, distance, water crossings and the availability of assistance need individual confirmation before travel.

ICMBio’s route menu lists the lakes area at 2 km one way and 4 km round trip, and the viewpoint at 2.2 km one way and 4.4 km round trip; both receive a low difficulty rating.
The published baseline is 8 km each way, 16 km round trip, rated moderate.
The menu lists 12 km one way, 24 km round trip, with a high difficulty rating.
Bambuzal is listed at 4.5 km round trip with low difficulty. Gavião and Andorinhas are each 14 km round trip and moderate. Tombador is a separate, harder 22 km round-trip option.
The regional official tourism organization lists Travessão and Congonhas in the highland sector. Access to Lapa dos Congonhas remains unresolved: a May 2026 report described a temporary closure, and no fresh ICMBio opening confirmation has been established. Exclude Lapa dos Congonhas from the suggested visit unless ICMBio confirms current permission and access. For any other highland plan, confirm the exact authorized starting point, permitted destination and current restrictions.
The March 2023 ICMBio guide describes a three-day traverse and requires free advance registration by email at least seven days before entry. Overnight stops are restricted to designated shelter areas.
Distances below are the park’s published one-way and total round-trip figures, not newly measured tracks. They come from the official route menu, whose PDF is dated 2013 and remains linked by ICMBio. Ask about changes before using them to plan a day. These descriptions do not provide navigation or certify that a route is open.
For a family outing, give everyone a different task: notice three leaf shapes, listen for two different calls, or sketch a rock texture. Compare discoveries at a safe stopping place without collecting anything. Keep the destination negotiable so the activity remains enjoyable even if you turn back early.
Campos rupestres are a mosaic, not an empty lawn: rocky outcrops, grassy patches, wet ground and wooded pockets support different plants. Look for compact rosettes and tough or hairy foliage from the trail. These forms help make sense of a demanding environment without needing to identify every species.
The park’s protected-fauna list includes the maned wolf. That makes the park important habitat, not a reliable viewing appointment. Enjoy smaller discoveries and birds as they appear; never bait, pursue or approach an animal for a photograph. Record observations without promising them to the next visitor.
Try a sequence of three images: the wider landscape, a plant in its setting and a close detail taken without leaving the trail. Let changing light be the subject. Do not climb wet rocks, handle flowers or delay the return to recreate somebody else’s waterfall photograph.
The park’s emblem draws on the form of the everlasting flowers known as sempre-vivas, associated here with the Eriocaulaceae family. A familiar logo can be a prompt to notice much smaller features of the landscape.
The Espinhaço setting helps explain the contrast between open vegetation and forest. Small changes in rock, soil and moisture create markedly different habitats, so a change beside the path can be as interesting as a distant panorama.
This is also a cultural landscape. ICMBio’s traverse guide describes old routes, former farming areas and buildings reused within the walking itinerary. Do not treat ruins or rock art as props: observe without touching, entering restricted areas or leaving marks.
In the drier months, start with generous water and sun protection and check for smoke or fire restrictions. The fire-management plan highlights the particular problem of late-dry-season fires; a dry forecast does not itself make a visit safe. In the wetter period, especially the November–March concentration described in the management plan, favor flexible dates and avoid dependence on river crossings. Highland cold, fog and wind deserve preparation in any season. Treat flowering and water volume as changing natural conditions, not bookable attractions.
The Ministry of Tourism’s September 2020 park sheet lists free admission, daily entry from 08:00 to 16:00 and exit by 18:00. Treat these as dated planning references, not live operating guarantees. ICMBio’s older route menu applies earlier destination cutoffs, including noon for Bandeirinhas and Tombador. Confirm current times, capacity controls and any charges before travelling. Private guiding, equipment and transfers are separate expenses.
Ask at the relevant gate about working toilets, drinking-water points, parking and the day’s visitor briefing. Their current condition has not been verified here. Arrive equipped for the whole outing, with necessary medication and spare essentials. Do not transfer amenities advertised by nearby private campgrounds to the national park, or assume that assistance can reach a remote trail quickly.
Belo Horizonte is the main regional starting point, roughly 100 km away in ICMBio’s national guide. MG-010 is the principal approach; the tourism sheet also identifies MG-424. Choose the correct gate before arranging the last leg. For public transport, verify the exact stop, onward connection and final return departure directly with the operator; no current timetable or fare is confirmed here. Airport arrival does not solve the trailhead transfer. For a traverse, arrange both drop-off and pickup, with a plan for delay rather than relying on a spontaneous ride.
No current audited step-free route or accessible-toilet specification was verified. Ask concrete questions: how far is the usable trail from the drop-off, what are the surface and gradient, are there steps or crossings, and where can someone rest or turn around? Describe the assistance needed rather than asking only whether the park is “accessible.” A short visit near an entrance may suit some visitors, but should not be promised before these details are checked. Families using strollers should make the same surface and turning-space checks.
Rain upstream can create a sudden flood even when it is not raining where you stand. Never force a swollen crossing or remain in a canyon or pool when conditions deteriorate. Keep back from waterfall edges, avoid jumping into unknown water, and supervise children continuously. If a route is closed, do not search for an unofficial entrance.
Follow the park’s no-campfires, no-barbecues, no-pets and no-collecting rules. Keep speakers away, stay on marked paths and take all waste out. Leave archaeological surfaces untouched. The official route menu warns of limited specialized rescue capacity: carry an offline plan, keep the group together and leave your itinerary and expected return with a trusted person. Do not depend on mobile reception or an immediate vehicle pickup.
