A short taste of GR 131 from El Pilar
At the refuge, identify the signed GR 131 direction for Fuencaliente. Walk only the initial forest section and return on the same path. Set an outward limit of about 15–20 minutes, turning sooner if the ground, gradient or weather stops suiting your group. Stay within the pinewood rather than making a summit or an exposed viewpoint your target. The turnaround point is yours to choose, so this suggestion has no fixed kilometre target. Remember that the marked trail itself continues much farther south.
Expect a mountain footpath rather than a paved recreation-area circuit. Check the first section before committing; children must be comfortable walking back as well as out. Uneven or loose ground makes a pushchair unsuitable as the default plan. If steps or gradients would be a problem, ask staff about the first section before setting out.
