Established in 1969, Doctor I. Sylvester Hankins Park holds significant historical resonance as it was named in honor of Dr. Isaiah Sylvester Hankins. Dr. Hankins was a prominent African American physician and civil rights advocate who returned to Orlando to practice medicine in 1926. He played a pivotal role in advocating for equal opportunities and recreational facilities for Black residents in Orlando. His contributions included leading initiatives for the development of homes for Black families in areas like Washington Shores and Murchinson Terrace, and spearheading a petition drive for a library for Black residents. Dr. Hankins was also one of the first Black physicians to practice at Orange Memorial Hospital and served on the biracial committee to integrate city schools. The park and its swimming pool were officially dedicated in his honor in 1974, a lasting tribute to his legacy and social progress in the local community. A plaque honoring Dr. I. Sylvester Hankins has been on display inside the park's Neighborhood Center since February 2021.
