The history of McCalls Dam State Park dates back to 1850 when an early settler, Johnny McCall, built a dam on White Deer Creek. This dam was initially constructed to power his large sawmill and shingle mill. Sixteen years later, the dam was repaired and repurposed as part of a series of "splash dams," used to transport white pine logs down the creek to the Susquehanna River and the extensive sawmills in Watsontown. Although the original dam and mill are long gone, the park retains its name in remembrance of Johnny McCall and his significant contribution to the area's lumbering history. The park's facilities were further developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933, laying the groundwork for the tranquil picnic and group tenting areas visitors enjoy today.
