The National Aquarium in Washington, D.
The National Aquarium in Washington, D.C., which held the title of the longest continuously operating aquarium in the United States for 140 years, permanently closed its doors on September 30, 2013. This closure was necessitated by extensive renovations of the Herbert C. Hoover Building, the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Commerce, where the aquarium had been housed since 1932. Following its closure, the collection of approximately 1,700 fish and other specimens was transferred to the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland. Planning to visit? Established in 1873, the National Aquarium in Washington, D.C., initially started in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, under the United States Commission of Fish and Fisheries. By 1878, a public aquarium was proposed for D.C., and it eventually moved to the lower level of the Department of Commerce building in 1932. It was notable as the first free and public aquarium in the United States. For many years, it operated independently until forming an alliance with the National Aquarium in Baltimore in 2003. Despite this alliance, the Washington, D.C., location ultimately closed its doors in 2013.
