The vision for the Shedd Aquarium originated with prominent Chicago businessman and philanthropist John G. Shedd, who was inspired to bring a world-class aquatic experience to his hometown after visiting aquariums during his travels. In 1924, Shedd donated $2 million (later increased to $3 million) to establish a public aquarium dedicated to educational and scientific purposes, aiming to house the "greatest variety of sea life under one roof." The Shedd Aquarium Society was officially founded in February 1924. Construction of the Beaux-Arts style building, designed by Graham, Anderson, Probst & White, began in 1927 and was completed in 1929. The John G. Shedd Aquarium officially opened its doors to the public on May 30, 1930. As one of the world's first inland aquariums, it was remarkable for having permanent exhibits of both saltwater and freshwater fish, a feat achieved by transporting over one million gallons of seawater by rail from Key West, Florida, in twenty tank cars. The aquarium has since undergone significant expansions, including the Abbott Oceanarium in 1991 and the Wild Reef in 2003, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987.
