SeaWorld San Diego first opened its doors on March 21, 1964, founded by four UCLA graduates: Milton Shedd, Ken Norris, David Demott, and George Millay. Initially conceived as an underwater restaurant and marine life show, the idea evolved into a 21-acre marine zoological park. The park proved an instant success, attracting over 400,000 guests in its first year. Over the decades, SeaWorld San Diego has undergone significant expansion and evolution. In 1976, the park was acquired by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, leading to further investment and the addition of major attractions like the Shark Encounter, a new Shamu Stadium, and the Penguin Encounter. The park has consistently introduced new rides and animal experiences, adapting to visitor preferences while maintaining its core mission of marine wildlife education and conservation.

Good to know before you go

Arrive Early and Plan Ahead

Get to the park before opening to maximize your time, especially for popular rides and animal encounters. Download the SeaWorld San Diego app to check park hours, showtimes, and ride wait times.

Check Show Schedules

Animal shows like Orca Encounter and Dolphin Adventures have specific times. Plan your day around these to ensure you don't miss them, and arrive 20-30 minutes early for good seats.

Stay Hydrated and Bring Snacks

While food options are available, bringing your own water bottles (which can be refilled at stations) and small snacks can save money. Outside food is generally not permitted, but exceptions for baby food/formula or special dietary needs may apply.

Prepare for Water

Many rides and show "splash zones" can get you wet. Consider wearing clothes that dry quickly or bringing a poncho, especially if riding attractions like Journey to Atlantis or Shipwreck Rapids, or sitting in the front rows of shows.

Visit Penguin Encounter During the Hottest Part of the Day: This indoor, chilly exhibit is a perfect escape from the midday heat and offers an incredible close-up view of hundreds of cold-weather penguins.

Consider Upgraded Experiences

For a more intimate experience, look into the various animal encounters and tours. Booking these in advance is highly recommended as they are popular and may sell out.
