In Niedersachsen, start at the Biosphaerium in Bleckede for river exhibits, aquariums and a view into the beaver lodge. The animals here are captive. For an outdoor outing in Amt Neuhaus, the short circuit at the Stixer Wanderdüne is a little over 1 km, with additional walking from the B195 car park. Loose sand and steps make it a small adventure rather than a pushchair promenade. Keep this separate from the much longer signed dune-and-moor tour VIII.
In Brandenburg, visit the NABU centre and look up at Rühstädt's stork nests from public village streets. For a longer walk, head to the dyke car park on the approach from Wustrow near Lenzen. The red-dot Rundwanderweg Deichrückverlegung is a 6 km circuit through the restored floodplain, taking in the Auenblick hide, old border tower and new dyke. Do not walk it during flooding.
In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, try the outdoor flood experiments at EinFlussReich, Am Elbberg 8–9 in Boizenburg-Vier, beside the Elwkieker viewpoint. In Sachsen-Anhalt, pair the Auenhaus, Am Kapenschlösschen 3 near Oranienbaum, with the sensory and orchard stations of the Auenpfad Kapenniederung.
In Schleswig-Holstein, confident walkers can follow the 10.4 km Wanderweg am Hohen Elbufer from Strandweg car park in Tesperhude to Elbstraße in Lauenburg. This is a one-way walk with natural surfaces and climbs through the wooded slopes. Arrange the return journey before setting out, or choose a shorter out-and-back section.
