Barockgarten im Park von Nell (Perl)

Come for a gentle garden break among patterned flowerbeds, clipped hedges and the old buildings of central Perl.

About

Come for a gentle garden break among patterned flowerbeds, clipped hedges and the old buildings of central Perl. The Barockgarten occupies 2,900 m² within Park von Nell, so you can take your time without committing to a long walk. Start beside the fountain and look towards the Palais across Biringerstraße: the garden makes much more sense when you notice the buildings around it.

Four planted compartments sit around the circular centre, with straight paths dividing them. In spring and summer, the changing flowers soften the tidy outlines. Try looking across a bed before moving closer to the path edge; the overall pattern and the individual flowers offer quite different photographs. The ground rises gently, and a look back from farther into the garden gives another view of the arrangement.

For families, this works well as a small outing with a pause on a bench and a separate stop at the park playground. The nearby Quiriniuskapelle and parish church add an easy spot-the-building game. Keep the Palais as an outside view from the street: it is privately owned and does not offer a public interior visit. The merchant Johann Marx built the Palais in 1733. The property later passed to the von Nell family, whose name remains attached to the house and park. The present formal garden was recreated from old plans through the cross-border Gärten ohne Grenzen project. Its setting brings the house, garden, chapel and parish church into one view of Perl’s historic centre.

What to do here

Choose a fountain-and-flowerbed stroll, or add the playground on the Zuckerknupp side of the wider park. Wander the paths around the planted compartments, then return to the entrance you used. For the playground extension, follow the park-edge path on the church/Zuckerknupp side and retrace it to the garden afterwards. These are flexible suggestions, with no published walking distance. Let children find a repeated colour on opposite sides of the garden, then choose one close-up photograph without stepping into a bed.

Seasonal info

The garden is free to enter and open year-round. Flower colours and the amount in bloom change with the planting season. In colder months, enjoy the layout and surrounding architecture, and plan a shorter daylight visit. Fountain operation has no published year-round timetable, so let running water be a bonus.

Accessibility

The formal entrance opposite the Palais has a double staircase. Official visitor information lists accessible entry, but does not say which entrance to use or give path gradients. The grounds rise gently and garden photographs show gravelly paths. With a wheelchair, walking aid or pushchair, ask Touristinformation Perl on +49 6867 66101 about the easiest current entrance and path conditions before travelling.

Walks and routes

Fountain and patterned beds

From your chosen garden entrance, make your way to the fountain. Explore the paths beside the four planted compartments, stopping where the planting frames the Palais or chapel.

Arrange the appropriate entrance before visiting if steps or loose surfaces would be a problem. This suggested order of sights is not an assessed accessible route.

Garden and playground, with the same-way return

After looking around the beds, take the path along the church/Zuckerknupp side of the garden towards the playground at the edge of the wider park. Keep to the public park paths.

The playground connection has no detailed accessibility assessment. Confirm the whole approach if you need a continuous step-free route.

A small outing in central Perl

Begin with the garden while everyone is fresh, choose a bench for your drawing or photographs, then decide whether there is energy for the playground. Return to your starting entrance before looking at the Palais from the street. Leave time for the crossings rather than rushing between the old buildings.

Things to try

Draw half, then find the other half

From a bench, sketch a simple flowerbed outline on one side of a page. Ask a child to find the matching shape across the garden and complete the drawing. Then compare the planned symmetry with the little differences between living plants.

Three pictures of one garden

Try one wide view with the Palais, one photograph of a bed’s pattern and one flower close-up from the path. Which picture says most about the place? Leave every plant where it is growing.

Keep a rainy visit short

Make a brief look at the flower patterns your outdoor stop, then move on rather than waiting beside the fountain in persistent rain. If it is open, Touristinformation Perl on Trierer Straße 8 has a book-exchange cupboard with books for adults and children. Check its hours separately; the Palais cannot serve as a public indoor refuge.

Stories and discoveries

A chapel with a continuing role

The Quiriniuskapelle is now a memorial to the victims of the two world wars. It is also associated with Perl’s traditional Quirinusritt, a horse procession with a blessing held on 1 May. Treat the chapel surroundings as a place of remembrance.

Getting there and practical advice

There are benches in the formal garden and a playground in the wider park. Parking is listed nearby. Bring your own drinking water and plan refreshments in Perl; an open public toilet in the garden is not confirmed.

For public transport, plan to the garden’s Biringerstraße address in Saarfahrplan. Perl has a railway station, and buses also connect the municipality with Merzig; include the final walk when choosing a connection. Drivers can look for signed parking at Zuckerknupp or beside the Vereinshaus on Quirinusstraße. Markets and other events can temporarily change the parking arrangements.

Before travelling, ask Touristinformation Perl which entrance avoids the formal gate’s steps and whether your planned garden-to-playground visit is manageable with your mobility equipment. The office is at Trierer Straße 8; its phone number is +49 6867 66101. An accessible-entry symbol does not describe every path surface.
