Barockgarten Orangerie Blieskastel

Come for a garden pause among straight paths, clipped greenery and the remains of Blieskastel’s former palace grounds.

About

Come for a garden pause among straight paths, clipped greenery and the remains of Blieskastel’s former palace grounds. Start by the central fountain and look along the crossing paths: they divide the garden into four quarters. It is an easy place to slow down and notice how a garden is put together, from the repeated shapes of the planting to the building at its edge.

The Orangerie, also called the Langer Bau, gives the setting its character. Its surviving five bays once belonged to a much longer building. Turn between the façade and the garden for two very different photographs: one close to the stonework, another with the paths leading your eye towards it. Children can try drawing the garden as a simple plan, then add the details they find. Keep this as a short stop or combine it with the old town below, once you have checked the current approach. Enhance your adventure: download the Snappit app to identify the local species you encounter.

The Langer Bau was completed in 1670 as a place for the von der Leyen family and their guests to stroll and spend time together. It later sheltered orange trees and other tender fruit plants in winter. The present garden took shape during the building’s 1982–1986 restoration, drawing on a plan from 1783. That makes it a modern recreation of a formal garden, while the surviving building connects it to the former palace.

What to do here

For the garden alone, enter through an open public entrance, follow the paths to the fountain and explore whichever bed edges catch your eye. Return along your chosen paths to the same entrance; there is no fixed kilometre distance. For a longer outing, the Blieskasteler Barock audio walk normally runs about 1 km from Paradeplatz to the Orangerie, taking around 40 minutes. It climbs through the old town and finishes with steps. Check that a pedestrian route is open during the Schlossbergstraße works before committing to it, and allow for the walk back to Paradeplatz.

Seasonal info

Schlossbergstraße has road and pavement restrictions during water-main works, expected to continue until 30 April 2027. Luitpoldplatz is also affected by a road closure and some nearby parking restrictions until 13 November 2026. Check the city’s current works notices and ask Tourist Info about the garden approach before travelling. The fountain was restored and restarted for the 2025 season, but do not rely on it running in cold weather or during maintenance.

Accessibility

The normal audio walk includes asphalt, a noticeable uphill climb and steps near the Orangerie. The garden has gravel paths and stone edging around the fountain. With a wheelchair, pushchair or walking aid, ask Tourist Info to confirm a suitable entrance and current pedestrian access through the works. A short garden visit does not remove the difficulty of reaching it from the old town.

Walks and routes

Fountain and garden details

Once you have reached an open public garden entrance, follow the garden paths towards the fountain. Choose a short branch of the crossing paths for a closer look at the planting, then turn back.

From Paradeplatz to the Orangerie and back

Use this longer option only after confirming that the pedestrian approach is open. Follow the Lauschtour app from Paradeplatz through Gerbergasse and Mühleneck, the old town, Herkulesbrunnen and Napoleonbrunnen, then Hinnereck, the Hofratshäuser and Schlosskirche to the Orangerie. Pause for the garden visit.

Things to try

Find the garden’s pattern

From beside the fountain, count the four garden quarters and look for shapes that repeat. Sketch the path cross and fountain circle, then invent a planting pattern for one quarter on paper.

Make a three-picture garden story

Take one wide view with the Orangerie, one photograph of the fountain and one close-up of a leaf or clipped shape reachable from the path. Compare how the same garden looks at three different scales.

If the weather turns, the small “Das 3 x 3 der Biosphäre Bliesgau” exhibition in Haus des Bürgers offers an indoor look at the surrounding landscape through information panels and models. Check Tourist Info’s opening hours and the Luitpoldplatz approach first; it is a separate stop, not shelter inside the garden.

Stories and discoveries

A garden on two levels

The historic layout paired an upper pleasure garden with a lower kitchen garden. At the southern edge, a two-armed stair structure and grotto niche recall that terraced arrangement; a school now occupies the former lower garden.

Getting there and practical advice

Bring drinking water. For toilets, access advice and town information, contact Tourist Info in Haus des Bürgers, Luitpoldplatz 5, on +49 6842 926-1315. Do not rely on the Orangerie’s event rooms being open during a casual garden visit.

For public transport, plan via Blieskastel-Lautzkirchen railway station and check onward buses to Busbahnhof Blieskastel in the journey planner. The garden is uphill from the old town. Parking is listed near the Orangerie, but check the current road approach before driving; Luitpoldplatz and some Florianstraße parking are restricted during the works scheduled to 13 November 2026.

The Lauschtour also has a sign-language version in the app. This helps with the stories; the route itself still has slopes and steps, and construction may alter access.
