Ilha do Cardoso State Park

This is an island to understand slowly.

About

This is an island to understand slowly. A boat approach introduces the waters of the Lagamar; ashore, the interest shifts from the broad coastal landscape to roots, crabs, forest shade and the knowledge of the people who live here. Rather than trying to collect every beach in a single trip, choose a nucleus, arrange the essentials and leave time to notice how the environments meet.

The state’s visitor guide gives the park’s area as 13,600 hectares. Its landscape includes Atlantic Forest, restinga vegetation on coastal sands, mangroves and rocky shores. It also protects cultural heritage, including sambaquis, archaeological shell-mound sites. This is not an empty wilderness set aside from human history: community life belongs at the centre of the visit.

Perequê is in the north, associated with Itacuruçá/Pereirinha. The community association AMOIP says it has managed the nucleus since January 2023. Its account of local life connects fishing, family histories and the struggle to remain in the territory. Book a hosted experience when available, listen before photographing, and do not treat homes, working boats or fishing equipment as public exhibits.

Marujá, farther south, offers a different rhythm. The official guide describes resident-run guesthouses and camping areas, alongside monitored nature outings. An overnight stay makes sense if you want a substantial walk without squeezing it between two transfers. Choose the accommodation first, then build the activities around the host’s advice and the conditions, not around an ambitious map-based circuit. Turn your visit into a safari! Use the Snappit app to scan and log wildlife sightings here.

What to do here

For a first visit, combine a manageable guided outing with time to look closely rather than covering distance. At Perequê, ask about the mangrove boardwalk and visitor centre. At Marujá, choose between a coastal walk and a separately arranged waterfall excursion. Local cultural activities can add depth that another hurried beach stop cannot.

Seasonal info

The community operator reserves the right to change or cancel activities when weather or another factor affects safety. Agree beforehand on the alternative plan, return arrangements and any cancellation terms. A postponed walk is preferable to an itinerary that depends on every transfer working perfectly.

Accessibility

The official nucleus pages describe accessibility as partial. A boardwalk or adapted bathroom does not establish a step-free trip from Cananéia. Ask about the whole journey, including boarding, landing, sandy sections and the specific room or toilet you would use.

Walks and routes

Perequê: a close look at the mangrove

This raised wooden circuit is a good place to exchange a distant view for patient observation. Ask the monitor to explain the tide marks and differences between the mangrove trees. Look for small movements in the mud instead of expecting larger animals. Remain on the structure and leave shells, roots and wildlife untouched.

Marujá: Cachoeira Grande

Treat this as a boat-and-walk excursion, not a waterfall reached by simply following the beach from your lodging. The published meeting place is Marujá’s visitor centre. Arrange the boat leg and monitor together, and ask whether the waterfall area is suitable that day. Swimming is optional, never the condition for enjoying the outing.

Marujá: Morro da Tapera and Praia da Laje

This coastal outing uses the hill trail to reach Praia da Laje. Choose it for the landscape, but do not confuse beach walking with an effortless stroll. Ask locally about the permitted line, tide constraints and your turnaround point. A recommendation for this route is not permission to keep extending along the coast.

Marujá: Piscinas da Laje, a serious full-day choice

The attractive name conceals a long commitment. Reserve this for a suitably fit group with an environmental monitor, confirmed conditions and a clear return plan. Discuss water, food, pace and how anyone who cannot continue would be helped. It is not a casual add-on after arriving late from Cananéia.

Things to try

A family-sized nature lesson

At Perequê, let children choose a few things to observe rather than a long checklist: a crab moving, water beneath roots, or a bird using the shoreline. Ask the monitor to set the pace and choose safe stopping places. Pair one short activity with rest, not an endurance walk.

Caiçara knowledge, shared by its owners

AMOIP advertises oral-history conversations, fishing interpretation and craft workshops. These are hosted group activities, not a daily drop-in show; the published options generally specify at least 20 participants. Ask what can be arranged for your party. Request permission before portraits or recording a speaker.

Wildlife without a chase

The official cetacean excursion describes the estuary approach from Cananéia toward Pereirinha. Ask for quiet observation and a skipper who respects wildlife. A landscape-focused outing still has value when dolphins remain out of view. Keep hands and food to yourself and avoid boats that crowd animals.

Stories and discoveries

Conservation includes elusive animals

The park’s official profile includes pumas among its fauna. Historical surveys also document Puma concolor, but that is not a current sighting forecast. Their presence is a reason to value connected forest, not a reason to leave approved paths looking for a large cat.

The coast is not fixed

A November 2025 report by São Paulo’s Public Defender’s Office describes erosion threatening the island’s sandy barrier and recalls a breach in 2018. Old photographs and walking descriptions cannot establish today’s shoreline. The same changing coast is also home to communities, so treat disruption with sensitivity.

Community tourism is more than accommodation

At Perequê, residents’ association AMOIP operates visitor services; at Marujá, the official guide highlights participatory organization of tourism. Spending time with a host or monitor can reveal how conservation, local livelihoods and decisions about visitors fit together.

Getting there and practical advice

AMOIP lists an adapted common-use bathroom at Mangue Seco and an adapted bathroom in one Refúgio Cambuí house. Verify availability, doorway dimensions, turning space and the route from the landing to those facilities. These specific amenities do not establish independent wheelchair access across the nucleus.

Good to know before you go

Put the exact destination on your booking: Perequê/Itacuruçá-Pereirinha and Marujá are not interchangeable landings. Ask the provider to name the embarkation and return points.

Pack drinking water, a rain layer, sun and insect protection, footwear suitable for the agreed terrain, and a dry bag. Ask what meals and refill options are actually included.

Keep a photograph of your booking details and save contact information offline. Do not make your return depend on finding a signal or an unreserved boat at the end of the day.

Frequently asked questions

You can plan your land journey to the Cananéia gateway, but the visitor nuclei require a boat. The park administration’s urban address is not an island trailhead. Confirm your departure pier rather than navigating only to the administrative office.
The official Perequê and Marujá pages list admission as free. Boats, monitoring, accommodation, meals and particular activities are separate services. Request an itemized quote; free admission does not mean a free island excursion.
No single rule fits every outing. The official listings require environmental monitors for the mangrove boardwalk, Cachoeira Grande and Piscinas da Laje; Morro da Tapera is listed as self-guided. Confirm current permission and suitability locally before setting out.
No. Marujá’s official page prohibits wild camping. Book a permitted community camping area and ask about its facilities and rules. A quiet or apparently unused beach is not an invitation to pitch a tent.
Guiana dolphins, locally called botos-cinza, are documented around Itacuruçá/Pereirinha. Their scientific name is Sotalia guianensis. Sightings are possible, not guaranteed; stay back, never feed or pursue them, and do not buy a trip on the promise of physical contact.
