Tiergarten Delitzsch

Come to Tiergarten Delitzsch for a manageable animal-filled outing with plenty of room for children to pause, watch and play.

About

Come to Tiergarten Delitzsch for a manageable animal-filled outing with plenty of room for children to pause, watch and play. Its four-hectare grounds bring together a petting enclosure, walk-through aviaries and small animal areas, with the Zafari-Station café beside the waterfowl pond. Start at the entrance map and let each child choose one animal to find; you can build the rest of the visit around those favourites.

Make time for the aviary opposite the Zooschule, opened in July 2026. Military macaws share it with Azara’s agoutis, so there is something to look for both on the perches and at ground level. Elsewhere, De Brazza’s monkeys, meerkats and servals reward a slower look, while zebras and crowned cranes add a different scale to the day. These are captive zoo animals. Watch from the public paths and let a hidden or resting animal stay that way. Take the ultimate field guide with you: use the Snappit app to identify birds, plants, and animals on your trip.

The local Förderverein has helped reshape the zoo through a series of enclosure projects: a Goeldi’s monkey facility in 2017, the native-bird Fasanerie in 2019, renewed cat facilities in 2020 and a rebuilt budgerigar aviary in 2021. In 2026, it funded the new macaw–agouti aviary. These changes help explain why an older map may not match every enclosure today.

What to do here

Mix animal stops with the play equipment spread around the grounds. Visit the budgerigar walk-through when it is open, look for agoutis beneath the macaws, and compare the meerkats with the yellow mongooses in their neighbouring area. The petting enclosure and chicken yard give younger children a change of pace; follow the signs and staff instructions for contact. For a longer visit, add the zebras, crowned cranes, servals and alpacas, then return to a favourite enclosure before leaving. Follow the zoo’s current signs between stops.

Seasonal info

The zoo opens year-round at 09:00. The new winter schedule closes at 17:30 in October 2026, 17:00 in November, 16:00 in December and January, and 16:30 in February 2027; from March 2027 it closes at 18:00. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing. Recheck the official hours and notices before travelling. The Zooschule/Exotarium was closed after water damage in April 2026, with no reopening date announced; do not plan on its indoor exhibits without checking first.

Accessibility

The zoo describes its grounds as level and barrier-free. If you need particular path surfaces, door widths or an accessible toilet, ask about those details before travelling: the visitor map marks toilets but does not specify their accessible facilities. The contact is [email protected] or +49 34202 56419.

Walks and routes

If your family has different favourites

Let one person choose a bird stop, another a mammal stop and another a play break. Use the entrance map to connect them, with the café as an optional finish. This keeps a short visit satisfying without trying to tick off every enclosure.

Things to try

A two-level animal search

At the macaw–agouti aviary, ask one person to watch above ground and another to watch below. Compare what you noticed, then swap. It is a simple way to spend longer with a shared enclosure.

Wildlife and habitats

Start with the perches in the new aviary opposite the Zooschule, then look down for the agoutis. Try a photograph that shows how both animals use the same enclosure.

Give the floor of the aviary its own careful look. The agoutis are easy to overlook if everyone is watching the macaws above them.

At the enclosure labelled Brazzameerkatze, pause before taking a picture. Let children describe the animal’s face and posture, then compare what each person noticed.

The map groups meerkats and yellow mongooses in the same area. Read the enclosure labels before naming your photograph, and watch for different postures rather than trying to attract attention.

When the walk-through is open, stand still for a moment and notice the birds around you. Follow the entrance instructions and keep a clear space around the doors.

Look beside the waterfowl pond for the flamingo group. A wider photograph can include the birds and their waterside setting; you do not need to get every bird looking your way.

The outdoor aviary is near the zebras and servals. The zoo recommends warmer weather for seeing the cranes outside, so give this stop more weight on a mild day.

Watch the zebras in the enclosure shared with eland. Pick one animal and follow the pattern of its stripes from shoulder to flank before comparing it with another.

The alpaca area makes a good slower stop. Try a family sketch of one animal’s outline, or wait for a clear view without calling it towards the fence.

Check the quieter parts of the enclosure before moving on. If a cat is out of view, leave it undisturbed and consider another look later in your visit.

Stories and discoveries

A larger home for crowned cranes

The crowned cranes received a larger outdoor enclosure in 2024. In 2026 the zoo also highlighted the Zoo Animal of the Year campaign, which draws attention to threats to cranes and their African habitats.

When to visit

Give a winter visit daylight

Make a winter outing earlier in the day and shorten the animal list if it is cold. The new closing times vary through the season, so a late-afternoon arrival leaves much less time in December and January.

Getting there and practical advice

Useful landmarks

The ticket office and toilets are marked together by the entrance. The Zafari-Station is close by, beside the large waterfowl pond. Play areas are distributed around the zoo, so a break need not wait until the end.

The right address

Use Rosental 60 for your visit. Markt 3 is the city administration’s postal address, so it is not the zoo entrance. For bus and rail planning, follow the MDV link on the zoo’s contact page.

Plan around your own needs

For a wheelchair, walker or pushchair, the level grounds are a helpful starting point. Contact the zoo about the particular enclosures and facilities you want to use, especially walk-through entrances and toilet arrangements.

Good to know before you go

Arrival

Use the visitor address Rosental 60, 04509 Delitzsch. The official map marks free parking by the zoo; the entrance is beside the ticket office.

Public transport

Plan the journey through the MDV journey planner linked from the zoo’s contact page, including the final leg to Rosental 60. Check the return connection too.

Payment

The ticket office takes cash and cards. Bring cash for the Zafari-Station, which does not take cards.

Tickets

Compare the family ticket with individual admission. It covers two adults and up to four of their own children or grandchildren; check current prices before going.

Dogs and children

Dogs are not admitted. Children under 14 must come with an adult.

Indoor closure

Check the Zooschule notice before travelling. The April 2026 closure also put Goeldi’s monkeys and terrarium animals out of public view.

Map updates

Older maps show the macaws in their former enclosure. Look opposite the Zooschule for the new aviary and follow current signs.

Animal contact

Keep food away from animals unless staff explicitly direct a permitted activity. Stay on the visitor side of barriers and supervise children at the petting enclosure.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. One-hour tours are offered by prior arrangement, normally Monday to Friday from 10:00 until the ticket desk closes. Ask about an age-appropriate focus when booking at [email protected]; birthday visits have a separate format.
Treat it as an outdoor visit and bring waterproofs for passing showers. The café offers a break when open, but the Zooschule closure limits indoor options. For steady rain, a shorter animal visit or another day will be more comfortable.
The map is useful for orientation, but the collection and public access change. In particular, the macaws have moved and the Zooschule has a closure notice. Choose a few priorities and ask at the entrance about anything you especially want to see.
