Schloßgarten (Kiel)

Come to Schloßgarten for a gentle garden walk between Kiel’s old town and the Förde.

About

Come to Schloßgarten for a gentle garden walk between Kiel’s old town and the Förde. Start at the southern entrance beside the junction of Schloßgarten and Prinzengarten: the tree-lined paths lead towards the Kaiser Wilhelm I monument and its formal beds, then open into a broader lawn farther north. It is an easy place to slow down, look closely and give tired city-walking feet a break.

Within roughly three hectares, straight planting lines sit beside curved landscape-garden paths. The northern terrace gives the walk a clear destination, while benches make it easy to shorten the outing. Keep the garden itself as your main plan: the adjoining Kunsthalle and Antikensammlung are closed for renovation through the end of 2029, and their reopening schedule may change. Wondering what that bird or insect is? Find out on your visit using the Snappit nature app.

A small Renaissance garden was enlarged under Duchess Friederike Amalie in 1695. In the nineteenth century, curved paths and freer planting brought an English landscape-garden character. War damage and later parking use interrupted that history, before a major restoration returned the garden to public enjoyment; it reopened in June 2012. The equestrian monument is older than that restoration: Adolf Brütt’s work was inaugurated in 1896.

What to do here

Walk north from the southwest entrance to the equestrian monument, stopping to examine the horse and the reliefs around its base. Let children choose a detail to sketch, then compare the neat flowerbeds with the looser shapes of the surrounding trees. For a longer stroll, continue on the western garden path beside the large northern lawn to the curved approach to the terrace. Return down that same approach and south past the monument to your starting entrance. Staying in the southern garden avoids the terrace climb; these are suggested walks rather than signed trails with fixed distances.

Seasonal info

Flowering and leaf colour vary with the weather. The drooping star-of-Bethlehem colonies described here in 2015 and 2020 are a spring possibility, rather than something to expect throughout the year. In wet or frosty weather, take extra care on slopes and steps. After strong winds, respect any barriers around the mature trees.

Accessibility

Kiel describes the garden as having been rebuilt for barrier-free access. The northern terrace also has steps, so use the curved western approach if you need to avoid them. That approach still gains height; no gradient figures or continuous smooth-surface guarantee are available. The shorter southern walk leaves out this climb. For a wheelchair or pushchair, assess the surface and any temporary barriers at the entrance before committing to the longer route.

Don't miss

1

Monument and flowerbeds

The Kaiser Wilhelm I equestrian statue gives the southern garden a memorable centrepiece.

2

Old trees

Look up from the paths at branching shapes, then down at the planted and naturalised greenery beneath them.

3

Northern terrace

A raised garden space and a natural turning point for a longer stroll.

4

Förde setting

Harbour views and the nearby water place this small historic garden firmly in the middle of Kiel.

Walks and routes

Monument and flowerbeds, there and back

Begin inside the southwest garden entrance, north of the junction of Prinzengarten and Schloßgarten. Follow the path north along the western side of the southern garden, then turn towards the equestrian monument between the formal flowerbeds. Pause here before heading back.

The lower-effort choice for a short visit. Check the actual surface and any barriers on arrival; a smooth, level route throughout is not guaranteed.

Through the garden to the northern terrace

Start at the same southwest entrance and walk north past the monument. Continue along the western path beside the large northern lawn. Where the terrace rises ahead, take its curved western approach rather than the steps. Stop on the terrace; there is no need to continue towards the Kunsthalle buildings.

The curved approach avoids steps but still climbs. If the incline, surface or a temporary closure is unsuitable, turn at the lawn and return by the outward path.

Things to try

Straight lines and wandering lines

At the monument, trace the flowerbed shapes in the air without stepping into them. Farther north, compare them with the curving paths around the lawn. Ask children which layout they would choose for their own garden.

Wildlife and habitats

Beside the equestrian monument, look for the large horse-chestnut whose trunk divides into two main stems. Compare its branching shape with neighbouring trees from the path.

In spring, look from the paths beneath the old trees for drooping star-of-Bethlehem. These long-established garden flowers have spread into colonies; leave the plants and surrounding ground undisturbed.

Getting there and practical advice

Keep the visit simple

Benches offer places to pause. Bring water and make a separate plan for toilets and refreshments; no on-site toilet, drinking-water point or operating garden café is promised here.

Good to know before you go

Arrive by bus

Schloßgarten is served by daytime lines 32, 61 and 62. Check the KVG journey planner and diversion notices before setting out.

Start on the garden side

The suggested walks begin north of Prinzengarten street, at its junction with Schloßgarten. You do not need to enter the castle.

Keep the return simple

Retrace the outward path if little legs tire; neither walk requires the footbridge towards the waterfront.

Bring a small snack

Use a bench for a break and take litter away. Plan toilet stops separately; do not rely on facilities inside the closed Kunsthalle.

Give plants room

Photograph flowers from the paths and leave bulbs, blooms and fallen wood where they are.

Dogs on leads

Keep your dog close in the garden and clear up after it.

Near the Kunsthalle

Follow temporary signs and barriers. Do not depend on access to its outdoor sculpture area during the renovation.

Frequently asked questions

The Kunsthalle and Antikensammlung are closed for renovation through the end of 2029. Check the museum’s own updates before planning a later visit; do not count on it as a rainy-day refuge now.
The nearby Zoologisches Museum at Hegewischstraße 3 has whale skeletons and marine-life displays. It is a separate indoor visit and normally closes on Mondays. Check its current opening times and admission before going.
They have been recorded in this garden, but neither seasonal flowers nor individual old trees are guaranteed. Look gently from the paths and enjoy whatever is visible on the day.
