Tierpark Nordhorn

Visit Tierpark Nordhorn for a day that combines close animal observation with farm life, playgrounds and a little riverside nature.

About

Visit Tierpark Nordhorn for a day that combines close animal observation with farm life, playgrounds and a little riverside nature. Mature trees and gardens soften the 12-hectare grounds, while the historic Vechtewelt gives the zoo a strong sense of its Grafschaft Bentheim setting. Start near the entrance with the North American animals, then leave time for the central exhibits and the old farm buildings.

There are wood bison near the entrance, nimble white-nosed coatis and sloths worth studying slowly beside the playground. At the Geierfelsen you enter a rocky landscape with griffon vultures and northern bald ibises. Beside the Vechte oxbow, the wooden nature path feels much quieter, with genuine wild birds to look for beyond the zoo collection.

At the Vechtehof, rare livestock breeds connect the animals to local farming history. The restored Heckmann barn, fully opened in October 2026, adds raccoons and Cuy guinea pigs, alongside a story about the very different roles animals play in human lives. Explore the grounds like a pro—download the Snappit app to instantly identify animals and plants.

The zoo opened in 1950. The Vechtehof was once the Weduwen family's farmstead in Frensdorf; after later use as housing and shops, it was dismantled and rebuilt inside the zoo. The Heckmann barn also came from elsewhere in the city, from Bookholt. The Vechtewelt brings these buildings back into a setting with living farm animals.

What to do here

Take the zoo map and choose one keeper feeding from the day's programme as an anchor. The seal feeding is a good choice for watching movement in the water; the Schau-Futterküche offers a different view of the work behind animal care. Between talks, linger at the coatis, squirrel monkeys, meerkats and sloths.

Make room for the walk-through South America enclosure, where alpacas and maras share the scene, and the sheltered viewing places inside the Geierfelsen. Break at the central adventure playground, with its neighbouring cafeteria and picnic places. The Vechtehof playground offers a separate farm-themed sand-play stop.

For a gentler change of pace, follow the Vechtepfad beside the oxbow toward the historic farm area. Its wooden boardwalk follows the wooded bank, goes down toward the water and returns over the meadows. There is also a climbing-treehouse connection to the higher ground. Stay on the visitor paths and use the accessible entrances if steps are unsuitable.

Seasonal info

In warm weather, look for Hermann's tortoises on the ground in the sloths' outdoor enclosure. In winter, give the outdoor sections a shorter share of the day. Max Abenteuerland provides indoor play across three levels beside the central zoo catering area. Holiday opening arrangements can differ from the usual seasonal hours, so check before a Christmas or New Year visit.

Accessibility

Most of the zoo is wheelchair-accessible. The exceptions are the petting zoo beside the cafeteria and one entrance to the Geierfelsen; use its other entrance. Two of the Vechtepfad's three access points are step-free. Ask at the entrance which approach fits your route. Wheelchairs and rollators can be borrowed free with advance telephone arrangements. Accessible toilets and baby-changing facilities are at the entrance, De MalleJan and the cafeteria; an additional accessible toilet beside the market bistro has an adult changing table and hoist.

Walks and routes

Vechtepfad: the waterside nature path

A wooden nature path beside the old Vechte river bend, with interpretation about the water and surrounding woodland. Include it as a quiet link with the historic farm area.

Two of three access points are step-free. Ask staff for the suitable approach; the treehouse is an optional play feature.

A relaxed animal-and-farm day

Begin with the North America area, continue to a chosen feeding and the central animals, then take a substantial play-and-lunch break. Spend the afternoon around the Geierfelsen and the Vechtewelt, adding the boardwalk when everyone still has energy. Reverse parts of this suggested order to suit the day’s feeding programme.

Things to try

A farm-breed comparison

In the Vechtewelt, look for the spotted Bunte Bentheimer pigs and compare the different sheep breeds. Ask children to pick one visible feature, such as coat pattern or horn shape, and describe it before reading the label.

Max Abenteuerland

The roughly 200-square-metre indoor play space has three levels and can be heated. It is a useful rainy-day break beside the central zoo catering area, especially when the children need movement after slower animal watching.

Wildlife and habitats

Look above you among the climbing branches before deciding the sloths are out of sight. A long pause suits these slow-moving animals. In the warm season, scan the outdoor ground separately for their Hermann's tortoise neighbours.

Watch the ground as well as the lookout spots: digging and searching for food can be as absorbing as an upright pose. Compare the meerkats with the yellow mongooses sharing their enclosure.

These are harbour seals. Watch how a turn of the body changes their direction underwater, then compare that with their movement at the surface. A keeper feeding can offer a livelier view; use the current programme for timing.

Use the sheltered viewing places inside the rocky aviary. Look for the bald head, curved bill and shaggy neck feathers to separate an ibis from its much larger vulture neighbours. Let the birds choose their distance.

Look for a pale muzzle and long nose at the coati enclosure near the entrance. Try following one animal with your eyes as it investigates its surroundings.

Look through the upper branches for the monkeys, then compare what is happening at ground level, where the agoutis live. Their shared enclosure is a good place for children to notice how different animals use the same space.

Try the barn windows and the outdoor garden view. The exhibit is arranged around a washhouse-and-garden setting with climbing places and water. Watch the paws at work if an animal is active; the displays also explain invasive species.

In spring and summer, look up for free-flying storks from the ordinary visitor paths. These wild birds are separate from the injured, flightless storks cared for on zoo meadows. Keep clear of nests and do not feed either group.

Pause quietly beside the water and watch for a low, fast blue flash. Wild kingfishers hunt here, though a sighting needs some luck. Stay on the boardwalk instead of following a bird along the bank.

Stories and discoveries

Conservation with local roots

Some of the zoo’s Bentheimer sheep graze conservation areas outside the park. Their grazing connects rare-breed conservation with care for local landscapes.

When to visit

Let the season set the pace

Make the outdoor animal areas and boardwalk the centre of a mild-weather visit. In cold or wet conditions, use shorter outdoor stretches between food, indoor play and sheltered viewing stops.

Getting there and practical advice

Useful things to have to hand

Food options include the central cafeteria, De MalleJan and the market bistro. Wheelchairs and rollators should be requested in advance; a valid identity document is needed for the loan. The adult-changing toilet beside the bistro can be opened with a Euro key or by asking at the bistro.

Arrival without a wrong turn

The public entrance is Heseper Weg 110. Heseper Weg 140 is the postal address. From Nordhorn railway station, city bus 32 provides the zoo connection; use a current journey planner for the departure and return times.

Choosing the right access point

The climbing-treehouse connection is optional. Choose the boardwalk’s accessible approaches if your group needs to avoid climbing.
