Campos do Jordão State Park

The Horto is an excellent place to give a Campos do Jordão trip a slower rhythm.

About

The Horto is an excellent place to give a Campos do Jordão trip a slower rhythm. Choose a walk, pause beside the water, and make time to notice the forest rather than collecting attractions. This is a state conservation park, not a landscaped theme park with an alpine backdrop. Its 8,341 hectares include araucaria forest, high-altitude grasslands and cloud forest, although an ordinary day visit explores only a small part of that landscape.

The trees tell two different stories. Native Araucaria angustifolia rises above the mixed-forest canopy, while the park also contains introduced conifer collections planted for scientific and commercial purposes, including Pinus and Taxodium distichum. Some planted areas are being managed to restore native forest. A tidy grove is therefore not necessarily an untouched habitat, and a conifer is not automatically a native araucaria. Look for interpretation or ask staff before identifying individual trees.

For a first visit, pair one self-guided trail with an unhurried stop in the visitor area. The waterfall walk suits people wanting a relatively gentle outing; Campos and Sapucaí offer more varied terrain. Families can keep the day shorter, while keen walkers can investigate a separately booked Celestina experience. The pleasure is in choosing an appropriate pace, not in finishing every route.

Visitor services operate under a concession: the state regulator identifies Urbanes Campos as the concessionaire. Commercial activities inside the park are optional additions, not the reason every visitor must come. Confirm the day’s routes at reception and treat ticket packages carefully: admission, parking, adventure activities and meals are different things unless the product explicitly combines them. What to do here

Walk to the Galharada waterfall, follow the Sapucaí landscape, compare native and planted forest, or settle into a family picnic-and-play outing. Ask first which trails and facilities are available that day.

Seasonal info

Winter brings the appeal of cool mountain air, but also a need for warm layers. Mist, rain and wind can change the character of a visit in any season. Check current forecasts and operator notices rather than relying on a seasonal slogan.

Accessibility

A trail described as easy or level is not automatically wheelchair-accessible. Ask about the entire journey from drop-off to toilets and your chosen attraction. An advertised electric-vehicle ride needs a separate check of boarding and mobility-device arrangements.

Walks and routes

Cachoeira: make the waterfall your main walk

The official directory calls this an easy, self-guided and relatively level trail. The Galharada stream and waterfall give the outing a natural focus. Walk at a pace that leaves time for photographs and a comfortable return; do not treat the attraction as permission to enter the water.

The directory estimates 1–1.5 hours; allow extra time for pauses and children.

The bridge walk: ask for the current route

Suspension bridges over the Sapucaí make this an appealing family choice, provided everyone is comfortable with the crossings. The state directory calls it Trilha das 3 Pontes; other official material uses Quatro Pontes. Follow current signs rather than an assumed number of bridges. Keep children close and avoid bouncing on the structures.

State directory: up to one hour, before personal stops.

Campos: choose a more varied walk

This moderate self-guided option introduces grassland and forest changes, with araucaria views. It is a better choice for walkers comfortable with uneven ground than for someone simply seeking the shortest stroll. Stay on the marked trail across open areas; an apparent shortcut can damage vegetation.

State directory: 1–1.5 hours.

Sapucaí: follow the changing landscape

The published route alternates forest and grassland near the river. Although its description sounds gentle, the official table grades it moderate, so plan on that basis. Make the interest a series of observation stops: water sounds, canopy changes and the transition from enclosed to open ground.

State directory: 1–1.5 hours.

Celestina: reserve the guided outing

Aventoriba currently markets a longer experience inside the park with a naturalist guide and park entry included. Its description is a specific bookable product, not evidence that independent visitors may follow the same route. Confirm meeting point, actual itinerary, difficulty, weather policy and inclusions before committing.

Provider description: about 3.5 hours, excluding any additional transfer or preparation.

Things to try

A small nature challenge for children

Let each child choose three things to notice: a tree silhouette, a sound and a change in the ground or water. Draw or photograph them without collecting anything. This makes a short permitted walk feel purposeful without turning it into a race.

Cycling with a clear plan

Zoom offers hourly mountain-bike rental and advertises waterfall and Bosque Vermelho options. Ask which routes are open to bicycles, what equipment is included and which size fits. Choose a distance that leaves time to return the bike calmly; do not assume every walking trail accepts cycling.

A supervised adventure, not an automatic extra

Tree-top circuits and Sapucaí zip lines are separately arranged activities. Check height, weight, health and footwear rules before promising an experience to a child. Ask about weather cancellation and whether park entry is included; being admitted to the park does not establish activity eligibility.

Stories and discoveries

A long history, not a new resort attraction

The park was created on 27 March 1941. Its founding decree also envisaged a forest nursery, horticulture and reforestation, helping explain why today’s landscape contains both conservation habitats and deliberately planted collections.

Look above the ordinary canopy

Araucaria angustifolia can project above the mixed forest’s canopy. Its outline offers a useful starting point for observation, but identification still benefits from labels or a knowledgeable guide.

Conservation and planting are different stories

Pine and bald-cypress collections are introduced plantings here. Enjoy their appearance while recognizing that restoration of native forest is a different conservation goal from maintaining an ornamental or experimental grove.

Getting there and practical advice

A river or waterfall photograph is not a swimming-safety assessment. Ask staff where, if anywhere, entry is permitted that day; do not climb wet rocks, enter fast water or use unofficial access paths.

Published material describes a visitor centre, toilets, parking, picnic and children’s areas, with food services in the visitor zone. Confirm which outlets and facilities are working on your date, especially if you have dietary needs. Bring drinking water and a backup snack rather than making the success of a walk depend on a particular kitchen being open.

Good to know before you go

Carry closed walking shoes, water, a snack, sun protection, rainwear and a warm layer. Pack for changing conditions, not just the temperature in central Campos do Jordão.

Photograph the day’s trail information at reception. Agree a turnaround time and choose a shorter option if someone is tired; a café break is a valid part of the outing.

Keep your return-transport plan separate from the park’s closing time. Save your ticket offline and establish where your driver or bus will collect you.

Frequently asked questions

No. Horto Florestal is the state park on Avenida Pedro Paulo. Parque Capivari and the Amantikir gardens are separate attractions with their own access rules and separately sold admission or activities. A city-wide sightseeing package may include several venues, but one entrance does not imply another.
Checked on 22 October 2026, the official ticket search index displayed R$27 general admission and R$13.50 senior/student categories, with car parking R$30 and motorcycle parking R$15. Confirm your date, eligibility, documentation and final total in the official ticket channel. These are published indications, not a verified checkout quote.
Published listings conflict: the state directory says daily 09:00–18:00, while the municipal tourism index says 09:00–17:00. Ask the park for your date’s opening, final admission and trail cutoffs. Zoom’s advertised 09:00–17:00 activity hours are a separate service schedule.
The state directory describes Cachoeira, Campos, Sapucaí and the bridge walk as self-guided. Celestina is better planned as a booked guided outing, not an extension improvised on arrival. Always respect the current signs and reception instructions.
The park’s admission information prohibits pets. Do not assume the pet policy of a restaurant or another Campos attraction applies here. If you use an assistance animal, ask the operator about the applicable access procedure before travelling.
The park has an important bird inventory, including the vinaceous-breasted amazon, but a species list is not a sighting promise. Bring binoculars, stop quietly and let birds approach or leave freely. A patient forest walk is worthwhile even without a rare encounter.
