Schlossparks Augustusburg & Falkenlust (Brühl)

Start with the view south from Augustusburg.

About

Start with the view south from Augustusburg. The formal beds, clipped borders and water features make the garden feel like an outdoor room, with the palace as its backdrop. Keep walking and the atmosphere changes: tree-lined paths lead into the softer woodland scenery of the landscape park.

Falkenlust adds a second destination beyond the main grounds. You can choose a short garden visit or give the whole ensemble a leisurely half-day. The outdoor visit is free; going inside the palaces is a separate, ticketed choice. Brühl railway station is a convenient starting point, about 300 metres from Augustusburg. Wondering what that bird or insect is? Find out on your visit using the Snappit nature app.

Dominique Girard arrived in Brühl in 1727, with work on the formal garden beginning from 1728. Peter Joseph Lenné reshaped wooded parts as a landscape garden from 1842, while important formal structures survived. The ornamental garden was reconstructed from Girard’s plans in 1933–1935 and revised again in the 1980s. Augustusburg, Falkenlust and their gardens joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1984.

What to do here

Take your time around the Broderieparterre, the ornamental garden whose patterns resemble embroidery, and follow the view towards the Spiegelweiher. For a quieter change of pace, choose an open woodland path and look at the trees, water and spring ground flora. The longer walk to Falkenlust is approximately 5 km there and back from Brühl station, using the same pedestrian route in both directions. It combines garden paths with a connecting walk between the separate grounds; allow for the full return before adding a palace visit.

Seasonal info

The park opens daily within seasonal gate hours: 08:00–17:00 in November–February, 08:00–18:00 in March and October, 07:00–20:00 in April and September, and 07:00–21:00 in May–August. The “Am Großen Inselweiher” section closes one hour earlier. Both palaces normally close December–February and on Mondays. Check the official notices before travelling: weather and tree-safety closures can override the timetable.

Accessibility

The main garden paths are described as accessible to visitors with walking impairments, but individual surfaces and entrances still matter. Ask the operator about your intended route, especially before attempting the full Falkenlust connection. Augustusburg’s interior has limited wheelchair/walker access by prior arrangement; Falkenlust’s interior is not accessible with a wheelchair or walker. For a shorter visit, keep to the main paths near Augustusburg and retrace a comfortable section.

Walks and routes

Augustusburg garden taster

Begin beside Augustusburg on its southern garden side. Follow an open path alongside the Broderieparterre towards the Spiegelweiher, stopping to look back at the palace. Turn wherever the distance feels comfortable.

The short retraced line lets you assess the return as you go. Confirm a suitable entrance with the operator if you need dependable step-free access.

Brühl station to Falkenlust and back

From Brühl (Rheinland) station, approach Augustusburg and follow the open pedestrian connection through its park towards Schloss Falkenlust. Continue on the designated route between the separate palace grounds. At Falkenlust, pause for the outside view or add a ticketed interior visit. Use only designated railway crossings; never cross the tracks independently.

The full connection is not certified here as wheelchair-accessible. Ask the operator about current barriers and surfaces before committing to the return distance.

Brühl station to Falkenlust and back

A flexible half-day

Arrive at Brühl station and give the formal garden an unhurried first look. If everyone is comfortable with the distance and the gate hours leave enough time, continue to Falkenlust. Pause outside the lodge, then retrace the pedestrian route to the station. For a shorter day, turn back after the garden taster.

Things to try

Find a pattern

With children, choose one shape in the parterre and look for where it repeats. Then compare that carefully arranged view with the less regular woodland paths. Keep the game on the paths, outside the planting.

Add a palace visit

Augustusburg’s standard interior visit is guided, while Falkenlust can be explored independently. Arrange the indoor part before extending your walk so that admission and gate hours still fit.

Keep a rainy visit flexible

In light rain, keep the outdoor walk short and turn back if surfaces become uncomfortable. A palace visit can add indoor time during its opening season, but it needs admission and may involve waiting. In strong wind or a park closure, postpone the woodland walk rather than sheltering beneath trees.

Wildlife and habitats

Look for its spring flower spikes beside woodland paths; photograph the whole plant without stepping into the patch.

Look for spring growth and white flowerheads from the path. Leave the plants untouched; this is a looking stop, not a collecting opportunity.

Compare the ivy covering the woodland floor with the more seasonal plants around it, keeping your feet on the path.

Look for arrow-shaped leaves close to the path. Observe without touching, tasting or picking any part of the plant.

Look for the low yellow flowers during a spring walk, taking your photograph from the path rather than entering the ground vegetation.

Listen quietly and scan trunks and branches from the path. Leave cavities and any birds using them well alone.

Scan the water margins from an open path. Keep your distance and let the bird feed for itself.

Stories and discoveries

A hunting lodge with a purpose

Falkenlust was built between 1729 and 1737 for Clemens August’s falconry. Its setting was chosen in relation to grey herons travelling between their nests and feeding grounds near the Rhine. That is a historical story, not a promise of falcons or herons today.

A changing woodland

The woodland is part of a carefully managed historic garden. Climate-adaptation work in 2025 promoted oak regeneration and more varied woodland edges, while aiming to retain the character of Lenné’s landscape.

When to visit

Palace admission alongside a free garden visit

During the March–November palace season, Tuesday–Friday opening is 09:00 with last admission at 16:00; weekends and public holidays start at 10:00 with last admission at 17:00. Mondays are normally closed, with Easter Monday and Whit Monday exceptions. Standard adult tickets are €15 for Augustusburg, €8 for Falkenlust or €21 for Ticket Plus covering both. The €9.50 Special ticket has a narrower exhibition-and-staircase scope. Check the current prices, concessions and opening notices before buying.

Getting there and practical advice

Benches, toilets, a shop and nearby food or drink are listed for the palace-garden visit. Their opening times need not match the park’s gate hours, especially in winter. Ask ahead if an accessible toilet is essential; bring your own drinking water.

Brühl (Rheinland) railway station is about 300 metres from Augustusburg. Brühl-Mitte on light-rail line 18 is around 800 metres away. Check current services before travelling. For driving, use Parkplatz Max-Ernst-Allee for Augustusburg or An Schloss Falkenlust for the lodge. Cyclists are directed outside the park along Rheinstraße, then Otto-Wels-Straße, following the Falkenlust signs.

For route and building access advice, contact the palace visitor information on +49 2232 44000 or [email protected]. Describe whether you need a step-free entrance, a short walking distance or access with a wheelchair or walker. The main-path description does not establish that the complete connection to Falkenlust meets your needs.

Return time

Leave enough time to get back from Falkenlust before the park gates close.

Wildlife space

Stay on paths, leave plants untouched and do not feed birds or other animals.

Bicycles

Push your bike inside the grounds; use the signed outside connection if you want to ride between the palaces.

Dogs

Keep dogs on a short lead. They cannot enter the Jardin Secret or either palace.

Winter footing

Take care in ice or snow; winter treatment is limited to paths immediately beside the palace.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Garden admission is free; tickets are for the palace interiors.
No. Enjoy Augustusburg’s gardens on their own if the longer return walk would be too much. A short visit still gives you the formal garden and its water views.
Do not plan on one: the operator lists no direct public-transport connection at Falkenlust. The suggested walk returns to Brühl station on foot.
The operator’s current park notice says the works are complete and previously closed paths have reopened. Check again before setting out, because a new weather-related closure may affect your visit.
Yes, but pushchairs and buggies must stay in the ticket-office area rather than enter the historic rooms. Check admission and tour arrangements before building your day around an indoor visit.
