Chollipo Arboretum

Come to Chollipo for the pleasure of looking closely: a named magnolia beside a pond, an unfamiliar leaf, or a glimpse of the sea beyond the trees.

About

Come to Chollipo for the pleasure of looking closely: a named magnolia beside a pond, an unfamiliar leaf, or a glimpse of the sea beyond the trees. Its character comes from a living botanical collection rather than a long-distance walking trail. Plant enthusiasts can linger over labels; companions can enjoy a shorter garden wander. The key planning distinction is between the public garden and the much larger institution. Ordinary admission covers Miller Garden. Other collection areas, including the separate magnolia gardens, are not automatically included. Planning to visit? Download the Snappit app to identify the wildlife you spot in real-time.

Chollipo grew from the dedication of Carl Ferris Miller, known in Korea as Min Byung-gal. Land acquisition began in 1962 and arboretum creation in 1970; Miller Garden opened to the general public on 1 March 2009. The founder died in 2002. His memorial introduces both his life and the development of the collection, giving the garden a human story alongside its botanical one. [Read the founder’s story](https://www.chollipo.org/24).

What to do here

Explore Miller Garden slowly, balancing the planted areas with the coastal outlook. Make the founder’s memorial a possible stop if it is open, and use the current garden map rather than trying to visit every area bearing the arboretum’s name. For a more focused botanical visit, look for a bookable guided programme that matches your date and interests.

Seasonal info

For autumn 2026, the published Autumn Walk runs 24 October–22 November, with the book fair on 24–25 October. The guided Secret Forest programme is scheduled for 27 October–22 November, excluding Mondays, with advance online booking required. These are dated events, not permanent access arrangements. [Check the autumn notice](https://www.chollipo.org/42/?bmode=view&idx=173832818&q=YToyOntzOjEyOiJrZXl3b3JkX3R5cGUiO3M6MzoiYWxsIjtzOjc6ImtleXdvcmQiO3M6Njoi66y47ZmUIjt9&t=board) before travelling.

Accessibility

Korea Tourism Organization lists a step-free approach and main entrance, accessible parking and toilets, plus wheelchair and stroller loans. That is useful entrance-level information, not a guarantee that every garden path or special tour is step-free. Ask staff to help choose a suitable route.

Walks and routes

A flexible Miller Garden visit

Start with the entrance map and ask which paths and plant displays are worth prioritising today. Build your own walk around the large pond and the seaward part of the public garden, returning for the memorial if you have time. This is a choice of interests, not a marked trail sequence: follow the on-site signs wherever paths divide. If the garden is busy, choose fewer stops and leave room for people to pass rather than stopping across the path for photographs.

Ask for the easiest currently open paths before setting out. Shorten the walk or retrace a comfortable section if the surface or gradient becomes unsuitable.

A flexible Miller Garden visit

If you have two hours

Use the first part of the visit for the plants you most want to see, while your attention and energy are fresh. Keep a little time for the coastal outlook, then decide whether to add the memorial or revisit a favourite planting. Travelling with children or someone who tires easily? Make one successful, comfortable section the goal and leave the rest optional. Do not squeeze a reserved hill programme into this same allowance.

Things to try

Let a guide help you choose what to notice

A Miller Garden interpretation walk is listed at 10:00 and 14:00, lasting about an hour, by advance Naver reservation. Check the available date, language and whether your group fits the booking, and confirm the current booking quote. Start with the official visit page.

When the weather turns

Light rain can suit a shorter plant-focused walk, but this is principally an outdoor visit. Bring suitable footwear and protect cameras from spray. Check whether the memorial is open, without counting on it as an all-day indoor alternative. Guided visits may continue in rain but can be cancelled for severe conditions. In strong wind or a weather warning, confirm the programme and public paths before making the journey.

Wildlife and habitats

Magnolia

Cultivated magnolias are the signature collection. The 17 April 2026 Miller Garden report named several cultivars, including ‘Vulcan’ and ‘Athene’. Magnolia is the genus shared by these different garden plants, so look for the rest of the name on each label. Their flowers do not all open together, and that spring report is not a bloom forecast for your visit. Dated Miller Garden report.

Star Magnolia

Star magnolia, Magnolia stellata, is represented by a cultivated variety described beside the large pond in an operator article dated 16 April 2026. Its narrow, numerous flower segments make it a rewarding spring comparison with other magnolias. This is a named garden planting, not a wild population; check a recent plant update if you want to catch its flowers. Operator plant profile.

Maple

Maples belong to the genus Acer, one of the arboretum’s major cultivated collections listed for December 2025. The name covers many different maples: read individual labels to find out which kind you are looking at. The collection extends beyond the public garden, so do not expect to see every maple listed by the institution during a Miller Garden walk.

Hibiscus

Hibiscus is another genus grown in the arboretum’s cultivated collections, listed in the operator’s December 2025 profile. Summer programmes offer one way to learn about selected plantings. Ask which are visible on the public visitor route and read their labels: a whole-arboretum collection list does not tell you where each plant grows or when it will flower.

Stories and discoveries

A collection is more than a species count

The operator’s collection profile lists 16,985 plant taxa for December 2025. This is a total for the whole institution, not a count of wild species or of everything visible in Miller Garden. Magnolias, camellias, hollies, hibiscus and maples are among the major cultivated collections. Labels help make sense of their diversity: two similar-looking trees may belong to different named cultivars. Explore the arboretum’s collection profile.

When to visit

Spring: choose the tree, then the date

The operator’s April 2026 update describes a succession of magnolias from mid-March to mid-May. The 2026 festival ran 27 March–19 April, with a separate reserved-garden extension on 21–25 April. Those events are over. For a future spring trip, wait for that year’s programme and recent bloom reports before making flower-specific plans. A standard visit remains worthwhile without booking the additional hill gardens.

Summer: leave space for the heat

Choose a manageable walk and carry water. The 2026 summer extension ran 18 July–16 August, closing at 19:00 with last entry at 18:00; it does not extend the rest of the year. A dated August programme also featured cultivated mugunghwa at the Eco Healing Center and Miller Garden. Future summer activities and extended hours need a new notice rather than an assumption that the same dates recur.

Autumn: book the special forest separately

Decide whether you want a self-guided garden day, the October book fair or the guided Secret Forest before choosing travel dates. The autumn programme’s reservation requirement applies to the guided forest outing. Do not substitute a general admission reservation for that programme. Its final November dates also fall within the shorter winter opening schedule.

Winter: give daylight priority

Plan the garden before a late lunch rather than leaving it to the end of the day. With a 17:00 finish, an arrival close to last entry allows less time than the usual 90-minute visit. A flexible outing centred on foliage, branching forms and the sea is a better fit than expecting spring flower displays.

Getting there and practical advice

Opening hours and last entry

Checked 18 October 2026: March–October hours are 09:00–18:00, last entry 17:00; November–February hours are 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:00. The operator lists year-round opening. Exceptional weather, works or a dated notice can change access, so check again before departure.

Admission budget

The current dedicated fee page lists standard admission at ₩13,000, rising to ₩15,000 in April–May. The concession rate is ₩10,000, or ₩11,000 in April–May; children from 36 months through elementary school are ₩6,000. Under-36-months entry is free. Bring proof for any concession and check the operator’s eligibility rules, especially its year-based adult and senior age bands. Check current fees.

The founder’s memorial

The Min Byung-gal Memorial Hall uses the former offices to present the founder’s life and arboretum history; his working room is recreated in the west building. Check opening arrangements locally. It is a useful way to connect the individual plant labels with the decades of collecting and care behind them.

Staying overnight

The operator offers detached Garden Houses and hostel-style rooms at the Eco Healing Center through its separate Garden Stay service. The published description includes arboretum admission for staying guests. Choose and reserve the specific accommodation rather than assuming a day ticket includes lodging or that every building is open to day visitors. Explore Garden Stay.

Getting to the correct entrance

Use the address 187 Cheollipo 1-gil, Sowon-myeon, Taean-gun, Chungcheongnam-do; the official Korean address is 충청남도 태안군 소원면 천리포1길 187. For public transport, the operator describes taking a Cheollipo-bound local bus from Taean Terminal and getting off at the arboretum. Check your outbound and return departures on the day rather than relying on older timetable tables. For a booked special garden, confirm its meeting point separately: the FAQ says those gardens are detached from the ordinary visitor garden. Official directions.

Plan mobility around the actual route

The KTO listing, updated 10 September 2026, records three loan wheelchairs and stroller loans. Availability is limited and not a reservation guarantee. Call the main number, +82 41-672-9982, to check equipment, accessible toilet location and the most suitable paths. Ask separately about wet surfaces, slopes and any steps near a stop you want to reach. For a special hill programme, describe your mobility requirements before paying rather than treating the accessible entrance as a route-wide assessment.

Good to know before you go

Check closing time before choosing a late visit: November brings an earlier finish.

Keep the label in one photograph when recording a plant you like. Cultivar names matter here.

Use the paths and leave plants, seeds, stones and other natural material in place.

Leave pets, picnic mats, food and camera tripods outside; water and drinks are allowed. The arboretum is smoke-free and alcohol-free.

Wear comfortable shoes and take a wind-resistant layer for the coast.

Buy ordinary admission separately from any guided programme unless its booking page explicitly includes entry.

Frequently asked questions

No. The operator’s FAQ says tickets can be bought at the entrance without a reservation. Advance tickets are also offered through Naver Place; the FAQ says they cannot be booked or refunded on the same day. Check the current checkout terms before paying.
No. Plan your ordinary visit around Miller Garden. A special programme may admit you to a particular otherwise closed garden, but it does not turn all research and conservation land into public walking space.
That depends on the date, weather and individual tree. Read the latest dated plant report. A spring photograph or a collection list establishes neither today’s bloom nor guaranteed visibility from the visitor paths.
No. The operator describes the separate Magnolia Garden as a lower hill walk and the Summit Magnolia Garden as a more demanding climb that also includes the lower garden. Assess your stamina and the exact programme before booking; ordinary garden accessibility information does not cover these slopes. The spring notices say the operator’s business-liability insurance does not apply in those closed gardens and suggest considering individual travel insurance. Read the current programme terms before booking.
