Seegarten (Losheim am See)

Come to the Seegarten for flowers, trees and changing views across the Losheim reservoir.

About

Come to the Seegarten for flowers, trees and changing views across the Losheim reservoir. Start beside the SeeGartenBistro and decide how much wandering everyone feels like. A few flowerbeds followed by a picnic make a lovely short visit.

The garden spreads across five hectares of lakeside ground. Its Staudenfluss is a flowing band of perennials running downhill towards the water. Lawns give the flowerbeds room, while the Douglas fir grove brings a taller, greener backdrop. The rose terraces, evergreen garden and pavilion offer places to pause before heading towards the shore.

Let children choose a flower colour or compare leaf shapes, then find somewhere to sit by the lake. Neighbouring attractions can extend the outing, but the water playground and NABU nature garden have separate access arrangements. Eager to name that creature? Identify any animal you find during your visit using the Snappit app.

The Seegarten opened in 2009 within the cross-border Gärten ohne Grenzen network. It developed the older Park der vier Jahreszeiten, or Park of the Four Seasons. Compare the evergreen areas with the flowerbeds to see that seasonal idea at work.

What to do here

Explore the rose terraces and pavilion area, then return along your outward path to the bistro entrance. For more walking, head downhill to the Ufergarten and towards the Seerosenbucht before retracing your route. Leave energy for the climb back. Neither suggestion has a fixed measured distance.

Photograph a whole flowerbed, one close-up and the planting with the lake behind it. Stay on the paths. For a game afterwards, Adventuregolf has 18 holes and its own entrance beside the bistro; check current hours and prices.

Seasonal info

Garden admission is normally free, with special arrangements possible during events. Confirm the day's gate opening and closing times with Tourist Information on +49 6872 609260 before a special journey, particularly in winter. Swimming, water play and the NABU garden follow separate access arrangements; a garden visit does not automatically include them.

Accessibility

Accessibility varies across the garden. Sloping paths and the winding Serpentinenweg can involve a climb back. Ask Tourist Information which entrance and paths suit your wheelchair, walking aid or pushchair. Accessible toilets around the reservoir use a EURO-WC key; confirm the nearest open one.

Walks and routes

Rose terraces and pavilion, with the same-way return

Enter beside the bistro. Follow the open garden paths to the rose terraces, then the pavilion and adjoining viewing area.

Ufergarten and Seerosenbucht, returning uphill

From the bistro entrance, follow an open garden path downhill to the Ufergarten, then its waterside beds towards the Seerosenbucht. Turn earlier if the return climb would be too much.

An easy two-hour outing

Choose either garden walk, pause for photographs and add a picnic or café break. Return before the gates close. Adventuregolf can extend the outing beyond two hours; check its separate opening and admission first.

Things to try

Three views of one flowerbed

Let everyone choose a colour, a leaf shape or the outline of a flowerbed. Photograph from the path and compare pictures during a break. A small area gives you plenty to work with.

A separate nature-garden visit

If the separately accessed NABU garden is open, compare its wet and dry habitats: pond, damp beds, dry stonework and deadwood. Leave logs, stones and pond life undisturbed.

Keep a rainy visit flexible

Wait out a shower in the bistro if it is open and has space. In persistent rain, shorten the hillside walk. Leave exposed waterside areas and trees in thunderstorms or strong winds.

Wildlife and habitats

Look for roses in the Rosenterrassen and Wildrosenhang. Compare flower shapes when they are in bloom, or examine the outline of the shrubs from the path. These are planted garden roses; the named wild-rose slope does not mean the shrubs grew here unaided.

In the Douglasienhain, step back far enough to photograph the trees’ full height and the contrast with the lower planting. Look at the needles and bark where they can be seen from a public path, without breaking off a twig.

Stories and discoveries

A spring display with a history

In spring 2016, the municipality described more than 20,000 bulbs, including daffodils, grape hyacinths, tulips and crown imperials. Seasonal colour has long been part of the garden; future displays can differ.

A willow chosen for its setting

In 2020, the Friends of the Seegarten donated a weeping willow for the Seerosenbucht. Its position was chosen to complement the shade garden and frame the lake view.

When to visit

A different subject each season

Spring brings fresh growth and changing bulb displays; summer suits the perennial beds. In autumn, photograph grasses against the lake. In winter, look for evergreen shapes and leave time before dusk and gate closing.

Getting there and practical advice

Food and toilets

The bistro serves food and drinks. Public toilets are listed about 50 metres below Tourist Information, with others around the reservoir. The garden plan also marks toilets by the bistro. Ask which are open and accessible.

Getting to the garden

Search Saarfahrplan for Losheim am See, Stausee Infostand or Stausee Park. Selected R1 journeys serve these stops; check your date and the final walk. Drivers should use a signed lake car park. Cameras record entry and exit: enter your registration at the machine and pay before returning to your car. You then have 15 minutes to leave.

Plan the return as well

Before heading downhill, ask about the return climb and a manageable route. Staying near the entrance may suit your group better. Do not assume that every themed area is accessible just because some paths are.

Arrival

Use Zum Stausee 198, 66679 Losheim am See, for the garden. Leave time for the approach from your parking place or bus stop.

Parking

Lake car parks use number-plate cameras. Pay for your stay before driving out and follow the signs; having no paper ticket does not mean parking is free.

With children

Bring drinking water and a snack. Keep young children close beside open water, and leave plants and wildlife undisturbed.

Water play

Check its separate opening and entry arrangements before bringing swimwear. The access gate is to the right of the bistro.

With a dog

Use a short lead in the garden. Dogs cannot enter the water playground, Strandbad or Adventuregolf.

Going home

Check the return bus before settling down for a long break, and allow time to walk back from the garden.
