Tierpark Dessau

Visit Tierpark Dessau for a family day that moves easily between animal-watching, old trees and an extraordinary domed mausoleum.

About

Visit Tierpark Dessau for a family day that moves easily between animal-watching, old trees and an extraordinary domed mausoleum. The 11-hectare park has room for a slow wander, with play and discovery stops along the way. At the entrance, choose two or three animals everyone wants to find, then leave space for the birds and buildings that catch your eye.

Make time for the walk-through wader aviary, known as Nordstrand. Its water system produces changing water levels and waves, bringing a little of the shore into this inland park. Around the other enclosures, look for the Pallas’s cat, capybaras and Ussuri Asian black bears. These are animals in human care, as are the park’s domestic goats and dromedaries.

The Anhaltischer Lehrbauernhof adds the story of farm animals to the visit. Harzer goats give children something familiar to compare with the less familiar mammals, while the tree labels invite everyone to look beyond the enclosures. The mausoleum and its broad lawn make a natural place to pause. You can enjoy the building from outside; interior openings and cultural events have their own dates. Unlock an interactive field guide for this spot: get the Snappit app to identify nature on the go.

The mausoleum was completed in 1898 as a burial place for the ducal family of Anhalt. Franz Heinrich Schwechten designed the building, while August Hooff shaped the surrounding park. The dome rises 43 m, but its historic appearance conceals a then-modern steel structure. That mix of carefully designed landscape and monumental architecture still gives today’s animal and plant learning park its distinctive setting.

What to do here

Combine a few patient mammal stops with the Nordstrand aviary, the farm area and the play stations. In the aviary, compare the birds’ bills and legs before looking at their signs. Give the Pallas’s cat time: a quiet animal can be easy to overlook. Then switch attention to a labelled tree or let children try a discovery station. The published main circuit is about 700 m. Follow the on-site signs and expect to walk farther if you explore the side paths or return to favourite animals.

Seasonal info

Spring brings fresh leaves and the chance to watch young animals, though births and visibility vary. Summer suits longer outdoor breaks; in autumn, compare the changing foliage with the tree labels. The bears may spend much of winter resting inside, with occasional outdoor appearances. Dress for an outdoor visit and check shorter winter hours rather than relying on the summer timetable.

Accessibility

The outdoor circuit is described as mostly easy to wheel, with slopes reaching 6%, benches and an accessible toilet near the kiosk. The terrarium has a stair-only entrance, and some other thresholds reach 8 cm. The detailed access assessment is older: call 0340 614426 to confirm the routes, toilet and parking that suit your wheelchair, mobility aid or pushchair. Do not assume every exhibit is step-free.

Confirm present-day access with the zoo; the terrarium is reached by stairs.

Main visitor circuit

A flexible family visit

Begin with two favourite animal enclosures while everyone is fresh. Add the wader aviary, then change pace with a tree or play station. Finish with the mausoleum exterior and a rest. Use the current park signs for the order on the ground.

Things to try

Three shapes at the water

At Nordstrand, choose three birds and describe a bill, a pair of legs and a body shape. Check the signs afterwards. You can make a tiny sketchbook record without needing every bird to pose.

A tree between animal stops

Choose two labelled trees beside the public paths. Compare bark and leaf shapes, or the pattern of branches in winter. Read the names afterwards and leave leaves, seeds and twigs in place.

Draw the dome

From a permitted visitor spot, sketch the mausoleum using circles, straight lines and triangles. Find the columns and the small lantern at the top, then see which shapes everyone noticed.

A short stop in the terrarium

When open, the terrarium offers a change of scale from the outdoor enclosures. Look for Tayo, the python, and read the exhibit labels. Allow for the stairs and keep a waterproof layer for the rest of the park.

Wildlife and habitats

Look for the pale chest marking when a bear faces you. If the enclosure seems quiet, try again later; winter rest can keep the bears indoors.

Let your eyes adjust to the enclosure before moving on. Find the cat’s outline and compare the position of its ears with a familiar domestic cat, without calling or tapping.

Watch the group for a while and describe what each animal is doing: resting, walking or investigating. Leave space for a quiet photograph rather than trying to make it move.

Look for the single hump and watch the long legs at work. Ask where the herd can currently be viewed: its new building is a planned improvement, so follow the signs to the existing viewing area.

Pause at the enclosure and look at the outlines of the animals before concentrating on details. Reindeer are the animals labelled Rentier here; their appearance changes through the year.

Use the enclosure label to pick out the Cape Barren goose, then watch how it walks and grazes if active. Keep your visit to the signed public viewing area.

Compare coat colours and horn shapes among the goats. They are domestic animals; follow the petting-area rules, allow them to retreat and keep fingers away from mouths.

Look for the slender upturned bill and watch whether it moves from side to side near the water. Compare its bill shape with the stilt’s, staying on the visitor floor.

Find the strikingly long legs, then watch the bird place its feet in shallow water. A short still pause often tells you more than walking straight through.

Compare the yellow underside and blue upper plumage when the bird’s position allows. Watch beak and feet work together, keeping fingers well outside the enclosure.

These suggestions concern captive exhibits. Dromedaries and goats are domestic animals. Dessau’s Ussuri bears belong to the Asian black bear species; the reindeer are described without assigning a particular subspecies. Individual animals may be indoors, resting or hidden.

Stories and discoveries

A working landscape

The large meadow in front of the mausoleum used to supply animal fodder. It is now used for recreation and events, while other patches of the zoo help provide fresh green feed. Some less closely mown areas also make room for insects.

Small hunters

The park also keeps yellow-throated martens, called Buntmarder on the signs. If one is active, follow its movement with your eyes before lifting the camera. A glimpse can be brief.

Getting there and practical advice

Plan the pause

Benches and a kiosk are listed along with the toilet facilities. Ask about refreshments and access at the entrance so you can place a break where it works best for your group.

Good to know before you go

Arrival

Use Querallee 8, 06846 Dessau-Roßlau. Parking is available by the zoo; follow the signs to the visitor entrance. Roadworks on nearby Puschkinallee start on 12 October 2026 and are planned into late October; check traffic notices and allow extra time.

By train or bus

Dessau Hauptbahnhof is roughly a 500 m walk away. For buses, search for Puschkinallee/Tierpark and check the day’s DVG timetable and diversions.

Keep your travel ticket

A public-transport ticket valid for that day can qualify you for reduced zoo admission. Show it at the ticket office and ask about eligibility.

Admission

Check the current tariff, family-ticket conditions and any event supplements before travelling. Dogs have a separate admission charge; ask about restrictions before entering animal walk-throughs.

Food and breaks

A kiosk and seating are listed. Ask what is open that day, particularly outside the main season, and keep some time for a proper rest.

Close encounters

Follow staff instructions in petting and walk-through areas. Let animals move away, leave feeding to staff unless explicitly invited, and wash hands after contact.

Before you leave

Return quietly to one enclosure where you saw little earlier. An animal may have changed position, but it may still be resting out of view.

Learning sessions

Check the Lehrparkschule calendar for themed activities. For a group visit, arrange the programme in advance and mention children’s ages and access needs.

Frequently asked questions

Nordstrand is a walk-through aviary. Follow the entrance signs, keep gates closed as instructed and stay on the visitor floor. Temporary animal-care restrictions can change access.
The Harzer goats and dromedaries are domestic animals kept in the zoo. Other animals, including the bears and Pallas’s cat, are captive representatives of wild species. All live in enclosures and are cared for by the zoo team.
Interior visits are offered on particular dates. Plan on seeing the exterior unless an opening or event is listed for your visit.
Most of the visit is outdoors. The terrarium can provide a short indoor stop when open, but it is reached by stairs. For persistent rain, shorten the zoo visit rather than counting on extensive indoor animal houses.
