Naturpark Schwarzwald Mitte/Nord

Come for Black Forest days that let children explore at their own pace, from stepping stones across a stream to a boardwalk beside a moor lake.

About

Come for Black Forest days that let children explore at their own pace, from stepping stones across a stream to a boardwalk beside a moor lake. Start by choosing one base: Bad Herrenalb for an adventurous woodland walk, Kaltenbronn for moors, Bad Wildbad for the treetops, or Lahr-Sulz for a summer water trail. Each makes a separate outing, with quite different walking and access needs.

Naturpark Schwarzwald Mitte/Nord covers about 4,200 square kilometres. Forested ridges sit alongside villages, grazing land and vineyards, so the journey between walks is part of understanding the place. Its work includes keeping this lived-in landscape healthy and helping visitors enjoy it responsibly. Within this landscape, Nationalpark Schwarzwald has its own management and visitor routes, centred on allowing natural processes to develop. The Biosphärengebiet Schwarzwald lies farther south. Choose the guide for the area you actually plan to visit; the outings below belong to the wider northern and central nature park.

There is plenty to notice without chasing a rare animal. Compare the rush of the young Alb with still moor water, watch how woodland opens around a bog, or study a tree crown from the height of its branches. Wildcat interpretation makes a memorable family adventure, but a real wildcat encounter is very unlikely. At Kaltenbronn, the boardwalk itself is part of the conservation story: it lets you see the wet landscape while keeping feet off fragile vegetation. Don't forget to bring the Snappit nature identification app along to scan local species.

The nature-park association was founded in 2000 by municipalities and districts working together across the northern and central Black Forest. Protection at Kaltenbronn goes back much further: Wildseemoor became a Bannwald, a forest left largely to develop naturally, in 1928. Today the landscape includes both such woods and areas where targeted care helps particular habitats survive.

What to do here

For an active half-day, follow the Wildkatzen-Walderlebnis from Skiheim Talwiese in Bad Herrenalb’s Oberes Gaistal. This signed 5.93 km circuit has about 195 m of ascent, ten learning stations and a crossing of the Alb on stepping stones. Children can work towards a Wildkatzen-Diplom. Expect narrow paths and repeated ups and downs; this is a walking adventure for families happy on uneven ground.

For a shorter moor outing, take Kaltenbronn’s 3 km Hohlohmoor-Runde from Parkplatz Schwarzmiss. The circuit has 52 m of ascent and links the moor landscape with Hohlohturm. Pause where the public boardwalk opens onto the lake, then decide whether everyone wants the extra tower climb. The view and the small details beside the boards deserve time.

At Bad Wildbad, the Baumwipfelpfad Schwarzwald offers 1.25 km of raised walkway, including the ramp inside its 40 m viewing tower. Learning and balancing stations break up the walk. It has paid admission, and the Sommerbergbahn journey is a separate part of the visit. Take the S6 to Uhlandplatz (Sommerbergbahn), ride up, then follow signs to the entrance.

Save the 4.5 km Wasserpfad Sulzbachtal for its May–September season and reserve a start time online beforehand. Begin at Naturbad Lahr-Sulz, Bachstraße 51. The circuit follows the stream to Rennweghütte and returns, with water experiments, wooden crossings and stepping stones along the way. Pack a picnic for the designated stopping places; leave the stream itself to its inhabitants.

Seasonal info

The Sulzbachtal trail is closed from 1 October 2026 and normally opens only from 1 May to 30 September; check the next season’s booking page. The Wildkatzen trail must not be used during storms or snow, and its river crossing can become impassable after heavy rain. Kaltenbronn’s info centre is closed 2–27 November and 24 December 2026. Moor-restoration work is under way at Hohloh; follow current site notices. Check treetop-path and funicular operating information before travelling.

Accessibility

For wheelchairs, rollators and pushchairs, the Baumwipfelpfad is the clearest choice here: path and tower are step-free, with gradients up to 6% and level resting places. An accessible toilet is in the tower. The Hohlohmoor-Runde carries a pushchair symbol on the local walking map; ask the info centre about present boardwalk conditions and any specific mobility needs. The tower climb is a separate decision. Neither the Wildkatzen trail nor the Sulzbachtal water trail is suitable for pushchairs.

Walks and routes

Wildkatzen-Walderlebnis, Bad Herrenalb

Start and finish at Skiheim Talwiese in Oberes Gaistal. Follow the signed cat trail; the route includes the young Alb and woodland learning stations.

A walking route without pushchair or wheelchair access. Children need adult supervision.

Wildkatzen-Walderlebnis, Bad Herrenalb

Hohlohmoor-Runde, Kaltenbronn

Use route 5 from Parkplatz Schwarzmiss, linking Hohlohmoor and Hohlohturm. Follow the walking map and diamond waymarks.

The official map marks this circuit for pushchairs. Ask the centre about surface conditions and wheelchair requirements; the map’s symbol does not assess every mobility aid.

Hohlohmoor-Runde, Kaltenbronn

Baumwipfelpfad Schwarzwald, Bad Wildbad

Enter on Sommerberg and follow the elevated walkway into the tower’s spiral ramp. The 1.25 km includes the tower ramp; access from transport stops is additional.

Suitable for wheelchairs, rollators and pushchairs. Contact the operator if you need to arrange a loan wheelchair or rollator.

Baumwipfelpfad Schwarzwald, Bad Wildbad

Wasserpfad Sulzbachtal, Lahr-Sulz

Start and finish at the Naturbad parking area, Bachstraße 51. Reach Rennweghütte along the stream section, then follow the return route through the valley.

Not suitable for pushchairs. Plan as a walking outing with supervised stream crossings.

Wasserpfad Sulzbachtal, Lahr-Sulz

A moor-focused half-day

Give the Hohlohmoor circuit the main part of the morning, then visit the Kaltenbronn exhibition if it is open. Those arriving by bus should check the stop for their chosen start point rather than adding an unplanned walk between Schwarzmiss and the centre.

A railway-and-treetops day

Use the S6 and Sommerbergbahn for the outward trip, spend an unhurried hour or two on the treetop path and leave time for lunch before returning. Check separate tickets and the last return service first.

Things to try

Let the children lead a station

On the Wildkatzen trail, take turns choosing a question to solve at the next station. The metal cats hidden among the trees give younger walkers something concrete to search for from the path.

Compare moving and still water

At Sulzbachtal’s water stations, try the provided experiments. At Kaltenbronn, look at the lake from the boardwalk and talk about where its water comes from. Keep experiments at the designated equipment.

Understand the moor indoors

Kaltenbronn’s nature exhibition explains the high-bog landscape. Its additional display on restoring Hohlohmoor shows why blocking old drainage channels helps retain water. The building’s seasonal closures still apply.

Wildlife and habitats

From the boardwalk, look closely at small plants already within view. Sundew’s sticky leaf hairs trap insects. Use your camera’s zoom rather than leaning or stepping into the bog.

Notice the low bilberry shrubs from the path. They help explain why a more open woodland floor matters to capercaillie. Leave berries and shoots where they grow in the reserve.

If a salamander is visible beside the trail, pause and photograph it where it is. Never handle it, turn over logs or move into the stream to look for larvae.

A kingfisher may appear briefly above the water. Wait quietly at an existing crossing or path-side viewpoint, leaving room for others. Do not search banks for nest holes.

Treat the trail as an introduction to wildcat habitat. A real encounter is very unlikely; keep the children’s challenge centred on the interpretation stations and metal cat figures.

This is a conservation story rather than an animal to seek out. Stay on marked paths, avoid loud calls and leave any bird you happen to encounter plenty of space.

These plants and animals are wild residents of the named landscape or habitat. They will not all be present on every outing. Wildcat and capercaillie interpretation offers a way to learn about elusive wildlife without trying to track it down.

Stay on the dry side of the boundary

Use the boards and marked paths, and leave fallen wood, flowers and berries in place. Do not feed ducks: extra nutrients alter the bog habitat. Photograph salamanders without touching them and watch kingfishers from public paths, away from nesting banks.

Stories and discoveries

A bog lives on rain

Once a raised bog’s peat surface grows above groundwater influence, its plants depend on rainwater. That helps explain both the scarcity of nutrients and the presence of insect-catching sundew.

Why the tower grew taller

Hohlohturm was raised in 1968 as the surrounding trees grew. Its present height is 28.6 m, giving a different view of the forest from the low boardwalk near the lake.

When to visit

Give the stream a winter break

The Sulzbachtal closure provides a rest period for plants and animals. Choose a different open outing outside its season, and check mountain weather separately from conditions in the valley.

Getting there and practical advice

Useful places to start

The Naturpark info shop is at Hauptstraße 94 in Bühlertal. For the moors, use Infozentrum Kaltenbronn, Kaltenbronn 600. It offers an interactive indoor exhibition and a free Naturpark information room; check opening days before adding it to a walk.

Match the journey to the trail

Kaltenbronn’s on-demand BW3 from Bad Wildbad and BW4 from Enzklösterle require booking at least 60 minutes ahead. From Gernsbach, check bus 242. At Bad Wildbad, the walk from the mountain station to the treetop entrance is additional to the attraction’s 1.25 km.

Discuss the whole outing

For a Bad Wildbad mobility-aid visit, check the approach as well as the raised path. Disabled parking is available opposite Restaurant Auerhahn with an approximately 200 m low-barrier approach. Reserve a loan wheelchair or rollator by phone before travelling if needed.

Good to know before you go

Choose one base

These four outings are spread across a large region. Give one of them your attention rather than racing between all four.

Book the water trail

Sulzbachtal requires an online start slot, even for an independent visit. Groups must split into parties of no more than ten.

Pack for crossings

Grippy, water-resistant shoes and spare socks are useful on the Wildkatzen and Sulzbachtal trails. Turn back if a crossing looks unsafe.

Arrange the return bus

Kaltenbronn’s BW3 and BW4 services are on demand. Book at least 60 minutes ahead through the VGC app or the number on the info centre’s service page.

Keep dogs in mind

Dogs must be leashed on the Wildkatzen and Sulzbachtal trails. Pets cannot enter the Baumwipfelpfad; assistance dogs are excepted.

Leave plants and animals alone

Stay on paths and boardwalks, keep wildlife at a distance and never feed ducks at the moor lakes.

Carry your lunch

Take food and water for the woodland routes. A named hut or shelter does not by itself mean refreshments are available.

Frequently asked questions

The national park sits within the much larger nature-park landscape, but it has its own visitor facilities, rules and routes. Ruhestein and the national-park trails need their own plan. The southern Black Forest biosphere reserve is another separate area.
Bad Wildbad is straightforward by S6 to Uhlandplatz and then Sommerbergbahn. For the Wildkatzen trail, use Bad Herrenalb as the interchange for bus 116 to Talwiese. Kaltenbronn is served from Gernsbach by line 242 and from the Enz valley by booked on-demand services. Check the outward and return connections for your day.
That would be exceptionally lucky. Enjoy the stations, puzzles and woodland habitat as the main attraction. The trail’s hidden metal cats are part of the learning experience, not sightings of live animals.
The Infozentrum Kaltenbronn has an indoor nature exhibition, subject to its opening calendar and November closure. The treetop path normally opens in rain but may close for thunderstorms, hail, strong wind or ice. Heavy rain is a reason to avoid stream-crossing trails.
Plan admission separately for each attraction. The Baumwipfelpfad and Kaltenbronn’s main exhibition charge admission, while the centre’s Naturpark information room is free. The Sulzbachtal trail has a start-time reservation system. Check each operator’s current details.
