Naturpark Knüll

Come to the Knüll for a walk that moves between quiet woodland, running water and wide views across the fields.

About

Come to the Knüll for a walk that moves between quiet woodland, running water and wide views across the fields. For a first visit, choose the short Kin Orem circuit near Riebelsdorf or make the Lochbachpfad your main outing. Give children time to listen at the stream, examine a leaf or find the next trail marker; the small discoveries suit this landscape well.

The nature park covers roughly 830 square kilometres of northern Hesse, with villages, farmland and extensive woods. It has many trailheads rather than a single entrance. Its 20 Fabelwege offer different ways into the landscape, so pick one area for the day instead of trying to connect far-apart sights.

Wildpark Knüll near Homberg (Efze) is a separate, admission-charging animal park within the region. Its bears, wolves and lynx are captive animals. The nature park’s woods, hedges and streams support free-living wildlife, including the five birds celebrated as the Fabelhaften Fünf. A soaring red kite is a more realistic everyday hope than a shy black stork; no walk guarantees either. Planning to visit? Download the Snappit app to identify the wildlife you spot in real-time.

Knüll became a nature park on 1 June 2021, although the Knüllgebirgsverein had proposed one in 1969. The protected landscape is also a lived-in, working region: woodland covers just over half its area, with farming accounting for much of the rest. Meadows, orchards and hedges are part of its character alongside the larger forests.

What to do here

Try Kin Orem, a roughly 3.6 km loop from the Dorfgemeinschaftshaus car park in Riebelsdorf: it climbs into open farmland and rewards the effort with views towards Neukirchen. The 8.3 km Lochbachpfad from Wanderparkplatz Wallenstein, Am Ebig, is a longer woodland-and-meadow circuit with narrow gorge paths and wooden bridges. The gorge itself is only about 1.1 km of the full walk. For a hilltop day, the roughly 6.8 km Eisenberg Panoramaweg starts at Parkplatz Rodelwiese and includes steeper wooded slopes as well as open views. All three distances include the circuit back to their starting point; bus-stop approaches are additional.

Seasonal info

Parts of Hutewaldweg are closed for forestry work from 1 October to 30 November 2026, between the Stern area, the water building and the Linchen-Tal access. Choose another route and check the nature park’s current notices before travelling. Wet wooden bridges in Lochbachklamm can be slippery; postpone the gorge walk in icy conditions or severe weather.

Accessibility

Kin Orem is mostly unsurfaced, with a climb; short distance does not make it a step-free, firm-surface route. Lochbachpfad has narrow paths and wooden crossings, while Eisenberg includes steeper sections. Ask the nature park about your exact wheelchair or pushchair requirements. At Wildpark Knüll, the main paths are gravel, some gradients are substantial, and the tower approach is steep with steps.

Don't miss

1

Lochbachklamm

A shaded sandstone gorge where bridges bring changing views of the stream.

2

Kin Orem

A manageable circuit through open country with a broad view across the Schwalm basin.

3

Eisenberg

Meadow and woodland walking around the Knüll’s highest hill, at 636 m.

4

Fabelhaften Fünf

Five wild bird species that introduce the park’s different habitats.

Walks and routes

Fabelweg Kin Orem

Follow the signed circuit anticlockwise from the village car park, climbing through open fields towards the viewpoints around Sprenzigköpfchen before returning to Riebelsdorf. Keep to the walking route beside the model-aircraft area.

Ask about current ground conditions and individual mobility needs; no continuous firm, level surface is promised.

Fabelweg Kin Orem

Fabelweg Lochbachpfad

Use the signed full circuit through Lochbachklamm and the surrounding woodland and meadows. The bridge-filled gorge is one section, followed by a much longer return around the landscape. Take the official map rather than trying to follow the stream all the way.

A walking route requiring secure footing. The gorge is not a dependable pushchair or wheelchair option.

Fabelweg Lochbachpfad

Fabelweg Eisenberg Panoramaweg

Walk the marked loop clockwise from Rodelwiese, taking in open grassland and wooded slopes. The Rhönblick shelter makes a useful pause. Plan around the landscape views; ask locally before making a Borgmannturm ascent part of the day.

More demanding than the short Kin Orem circuit. Check gradients and surfaces with the park if using a mobility aid.

Fabelweg Eisenberg Panoramaweg

A first half-day

Choose Kin Orem, bring a snack and leave time for unhurried stops. On another day, move on to Lochbachpfad if everyone is comfortable with the longer distance and narrow crossings.

An animal-focused day

Give Wildpark Knüll its own visit. Read the nature park information panels at the entrance, then explore the animal attraction if it suits your plans. The entrance playground is publicly accessible free of charge; entering the animal park requires a ticket.

Things to try

Read the landscape together

At a safe stopping place, take one picture of open country and one of woodland. Compare shelter, light and the sounds you hear. Let each child choose a small detail to photograph without picking it up.

Watch the evening sky

The Sternenerlebnis above Hergertsmühle near Seigertshausen has two star loungers, an information board and an audio experience. Find the access in daylight, bring warm layers and use only the light needed to get there safely. This is a separate evening outing, not an extension of the three circuits above.

Try a different kind of discovery

wortreich in Bad Hersfeld offers interactive language and communication exhibits indoors. Check opening and admission before making the separate journey; bring headphones with a 3.5 mm plug for some exhibits. Allow the outdoor walk to wait for better weather.

Wildlife and habitats

Look above the fields for a bird steering with a deeply forked tail. Binoculars help more than walking closer; a red kite may pass overhead without stopping.

Watch exposed stones from a public path or bridge for a compact brown bird with a white chest. A quiet wait may reveal its bobbing movement; do not enter the stream or inspect nest recesses.

Scan the tops of shrubs from the path during the warmer months. Males have a dark eye-mask. Use a distant perch view rather than moving into a hedge to get a closer photograph.

A small streaked bird can disappear into grass surprisingly quickly. Watch from the meadow edge and keep dogs close; ground-nesting birds need undisturbed cover.

Treat any distant black-stork sighting as a bonus. Stay on public routes and never seek out a nest or follow a bird into secluded woodland; this species readily leaves when disturbed.

Beech gives you a subject even when birds stay hidden. Frame the canopy above the path, then compare the woodland shade with the open meadow sections of the same walk.

Stories and discoveries

A bird that goes underwater

Dippers search for food beneath the surface of fast streams. Watching a white-chested bird vanish into flowing water can be more memorable than spotting a larger animal.

Habitats side by side

The eastern Knüll has extensive woodland, while the west has more agricultural land. The flagship birds help explain that variety: forest, fields, hedges, streams and damp meadows each offer different opportunities.

When to visit

Choose the walk for the conditions

Use a clear day for Eisenberg’s distant views. In summer, start the exposed Kin Orem walk before the hottest part of the day. After rain, be prepared to choose a different outing rather than hurry across the gorge bridges.

Getting there and practical advice

Carry what the walk needs

Bring drinking water and a picnic, and confirm toilets and food stops before leaving the village. Wildpark Knüll has its own facilities and rules; from November to January its regular opening is on weekends, with Christmas-holiday exceptions. Check the exact day before travelling.

Book rural connections

Use the named stops in the NVV planner and include the extra walk to and from the circuit. If the journey includes an AST, reserve it in advance and mention child-seat, pushchair or mobility-aid needs. A suitable wheelchair vehicle may need up to 24 hours’ notice.

Ask about the whole outing

For wheelchair or pushchair planning, check trail width, surface, steep sections, the bus-stop connection and toilets separately. At the wildlife park, gravel main paths still include significant slopes. Agree a suitable route with staff rather than assuming every enclosure or viewpoint is equally accessible.

Good to know before you go

Choose your starting point

Save the named trailhead, rather than navigating to the nature park office at Schloss Neuenstein.

Plan the journey home

Check both directions in the NVV planner. An AST connection must be booked; allow at least 30 minutes in advance.

Pack a picnic

Carry water and food, especially for Eisenberg, where you should not rely on an open restaurant.

Keep a steady footing

Wear grippy shoes for the gorge and slow down before wet wooden bridges.

Leave room for wildlife

Stay on paths, keep dogs close and leave flowers, stream stones and nests undisturbed.

Bring binoculars

Watch birds from a comfortable distance and avoid playback calls or searching for nests.

Check the animal-park rules

Wildpark Knüll requires cash and does not admit pets; check its seasonal opening before a separate visit.

Save the route map

Download the official walk information before setting out, then follow the signs and any local diversions.

Frequently asked questions

For Kin Orem, look up Riebelsdorf Mitte, Neukirchen (Knüll), with about 250 m to the route. For Eisenberg, use Salzberg Eisenberg Berggasthof, Neuenstein (Hessen), with about 200 m to the route. These approaches also need walking back after the circuit. Check the current NVV connection and any booking requirement.
The wildlife park is a separate animal attraction at Im Seckenhain 10, Homberg (Efze). Its captive animals, paid admission and opening hours belong to that attraction. The larger Naturpark Knüll is the surrounding landscape, explored from many public trailheads.
Yes. Make the stream, the woodland canopy and the changing views your main discoveries. The five flagship birds live across different habitats; trying to find all five in one family walk is an unrealistic goal.
For an indoor day, wortreich in Bad Hersfeld has hands-on activities about language and communication. It needs a separate journey and admission ticket. Check opening first: Mondays are normally closed, with holiday exceptions.
