Schlossgärten Blankenburg (Harz)

Come to Blankenburg for a garden walk that climbs from formal flowerbeds to views over the town and the Harz foothills.

About

Come to Blankenburg for a garden walk that climbs from formal flowerbeds to views over the town and the Harz foothills. Start beside the Kleines Schloss on Schnappelberg, where the tourist information makes a useful first stop. Look uphill through the Terrassengarten: the repeated basins, clipped planting and stone figures give children a whole line of details to discover before anyone needs to tackle the higher paths.

The gardens change character over a surprisingly short distance. Beyond the old town wall, the Berggarten has the intimate Rosenwinkel, a long stairway and the Teehaus above it. The Fasanengarten adds a playful modern element with brightly coloured metal feathers. Farther into the Schlosspark, a sweet-chestnut avenue replaces the close arrangement of beds and fountains with a much broader landscape. Choose the parts that suit your family's energy rather than trying to cover the entire estate.

Keep the two palaces straight when planning your day. The Kleines Schloss is beside the garden entrance and contains a small exhibition. The Großes Schloss stands higher on the hill and needs a separate uphill visit; its interiors are accessible on guided tours. The Tiergarten on the wider park map is the former hunting landscape extending beyond the main gardens. It is a much larger outing than the compact garden circuit. Be ready to snap and learn! The gardens grew with Blankenburg’s role as a ducal residence. Work on the Terrassengarten began in 1718, and its formal layout still provides the clearest introduction to that period. The park tells several later stories too: the Fasanengarten occupied an older site, became allotments after 1945 and was redesigned in 2002–2003. The wooded Tiergarten reaches further back, to an enclosure made in 1668 for hunting. Seeing these areas beside one another is a good way to talk about how people have used the same hillside for display, food-growing and recreation.

What to do here

Begin with a slow look along the Terrassengarten's water axis. Ask children to find a figure, a fountain and a pattern that repeats, then let them choose the best angle for a photograph. Head towards the Neptungrotte and, if the Berggarten is open and the climb suits you, continue through the garden connection towards the Teehaus. Looking back downhill helps make sense of how the terraces fit together.

The official Gartenspaziergang is a 1.1 km circuit with 47 m of ascent and descent. Its normal route links the lower formal gardens, Berggarten, the park near Obere Mühle and Fasanengarten before returning to the Kleines Schloss. It does not include the Großes Schloss or Luisenburg. The published 20 minutes is a walking-time figure; leave much longer for looking around. For an easier visit, explore the Terrassengarten and Fasanengarten separately from the main entrance and return the same way, asking the tourist information about the least steep open approaches.

Use the Schnappelberg main entrance for your arrival. The Marktstraße entrance is closed during Orangerie and stable-building works scheduled through late November 2026; follow the current barriers and ask about any adjustment to the normal circuit. Before extending towards the Schlossteich, check the city's pond-renovation notices rather than assuming that every waterside path is available.

Seasonal info

The Terrassengarten and Fasanengarten normally open 09:00–21:00 from April to September and 10:00–17:00 from October to March. The Berggarten follows the summer hours, opens 10:00–17:00 in October and November, and closes from December to March. Rain can also lead to closures. The Schlosspark and Tiergarten are freely accessible throughout the year. Check current notices before travelling, especially during the construction period; winter access to the wider park does not open the gated Berggarten.

Accessibility

There are step-free entrances to the Terrassengarten, Fasanengarten and Schlosspark, but this is sloping ground with only partly step-free routes. Some ramps are steep enough to require a helper. The main Schlosspark paths include small granite setts; other garden paths have compacted gravel. The Berggarten is a poor choice for wheelchairs and involves substantial climbing, with a long staircase as one option. With a pushchair, arrange a shorter lower-garden visit instead of assuming the 1.1 km circuit will be comfortable. An accessible toilet is available at the tourist information in the Kleines Schloss during its opening hours.

Don't miss

1

Terrassengarten

Follow the line of fountains and sandstone figures uphill from the Kleines Schloss, with time to enjoy the view back down.

2

Berggarten

The Rosenwinkel, Teehaus and elevated outlook reward a climb when the garden is open and the ground is dry.

3

Fasanengarten

Look for the towering coloured metal feathers that turn the garden’s pheasant story into sculpture.

4

Sweet-chestnut avenue

Take a quieter pause beside the old planted trees on the Schlosspark’s paved main path.

Walks and routes

Gartenspaziergang Blankenburg: the official garden circuit

Start and finish at the Kleines Schloss. The normal circuit explores the Terrassengarten, climbs into the Berggarten near the Teehaus and Obere Mühle, then returns through the Schlosspark and Fasanengarten. Pick up the garden-walk leaflet at the entrance. The Großes Schloss, Schlossteich and Luisenburg lie outside this compact circuit.

Choose individual lower-garden sections with advice from the tourist information if steps or steep slopes are a problem. No continuous wheelchair-friendly circuit is promised.

A shorter visit from the main entrance

Use the Schnappelberg main entrance at the Kleines Schloss to look around the Terrassengarten. Return to the entrance area, then visit the Fasanengarten by an open approach that suits your mobility before coming back to the same starting point. You can end after either garden.

Step-free entrances are available, but assistance may be needed on gradients. Ask for route advice before setting out with a wheelchair or pushchair.

Optional climb to the Großes Schloss

From the garden area near Obere Mühle, use open public park paths and signs towards the Großes Schloss. Keep the castle itself as the turnaround point. A guided interior visit needs its own place in your day and cannot be replaced by wandering through the building alone.

Do not treat this add-on as a step-free route or assume that palace interiors are accessible. Ask the palace operator about your requirements.

Things to try

Make a three-picture garden story

Let each person choose one wide view of the terrace layout, one small detail on a stone figure, and one living plant. Compare the pictures at your rest stop: which one explains the place best? You can do this without climbing every staircase.

Two very different kinds of feather

In the Fasanengarten, look at the shapes and colours of the metal feathers. Ask children how they would suggest a bird using only a line or a colour. There is no need to find a living pheasant for this garden game.

Wildlife and habitats

Look for the old chestnut avenue when you enter the Schlosspark near the main garden circuit. Try a photograph that includes several trunks to show the avenue’s shape, then a closer view of a leaf still attached to the tree. These are cultivated park trees.

When the Berggarten is open, slow down in the Rosenwinkel and compare the rose flowers that are actually in bloom. A close photograph and a wider picture of the bed make a nice pair. Flowering varies with the weather and the variety, so a visit outside the flowering season can look quite different.

Getting there and practical advice

A clear starting point

Aim for the tourist information at Schnappelberg 6. The nearby car park is on the east side of the old town. Coming from the railway station, the approximately 750 m described by the garden network ends at Schnappelberg; budget the same approach again for your return to the train, separately from time inside the gardens.

Toilets and a pause indoors

The Kleines Schloss combines tourist information, accessible toilet facilities and a small exhibition about the gardens, palaces and Welf family. Plan a stop while the building is open. Exhibition access can be restricted during events, and its hours differ from the garden gates.

Good to know before you go

Arrive at Schnappelberg

The tourist information is at Schnappelberg 6, beside the main garden entrance and nearby parking.

Leave time after the train

The garden network describes an approximately 750 m approach from Blankenburg station via Bahnhofstraße, Herzogstraße and Lühnertorplatz to Schnappelberg. That is the one-way approach, before your garden walk.

Check the entrance works

Avoid planning an arrival through Marktstraße during the works scheduled to late November 2026. Ask locally about the open route.

Wear grippy shoes

Hills, steps and uneven paving matter more here than the short distance suggests, particularly after rain.

Plan your toilet stop

Use the Kleines Schloss facilities while the tourist information is open; garden opening hours are longer in summer.

Keep a drink with you

A café stop can be a pleasure, but check the Teehaus or Obere Mühle opening arrangements before relying on one.

Add the palace deliberately

Check the Großes Schloss tour schedule first. Interior tours, café purchases and shop payments are cash-only.

Leave plants in place

Photograph flowers and fallen leaves without picking or collecting; give gardeners and other visitors room on the narrow paths.

Frequently asked questions

No. Even the short garden circuit has climbing. You can keep a visit to the lower gardens, but step-free entrances do not mean every path is level. Ask for an appropriate approach if you use a wheelchair or pushchair.
You can plan that, but the Großes Schloss is above the compact garden circuit. Check its separate opening and tour arrangements and allow for both the climb and the descent. The exhibition in the Kleines Schloss is the simpler indoor addition at the entrance.
The small exhibition in the Kleines Schloss explores the gardens, palaces and Welf family. It is a useful short indoor option when open, though it can close during events. Save steep garden paths for better conditions.
Here the name refers to the historic hunting park beyond the main gardens. Treat it as an extension for a longer landscape walk; this guide does not promise an animal-viewing visit.
The city welcomes dogs in the gardens. Keep them close, respect posted instructions and leave plenty of room around planted beds and other visitors.
