Serra dos Martírios/Andorinhas State Park

The appeal is in the contrasts: look from a wooded valley toward an exposed rock formation, then notice how shade, vegetation and water change along the permitted walk.

About

The appeal is in the contrasts: look from a wooded valley toward an exposed rock formation, then notice how shade, vegetation and water change along the permitted walk. Casa de Pedra is the landmark to ask about for its rock shelters and cultural significance. Waterfalls offer a different kind of outing, with time to watch moving water rather than simply reaching a viewpoint and turning back. Neither experience requires a wildlife sighting to be memorable.

The integrated management plan identifies jaguar and harpy eagle among the park’s conservation values, alongside Brazil-nut trees and mangaba. These records describe a protected living landscape, not animals available for viewing on demand. Look for smaller details with your conductor: the structure of leaves, shifts in vegetation and the sounds around a stream. Do not approach a nest, follow an animal into cover or treat a quiet walk as a failed safari.

Rock art and the region’s more recent history deserve attention without turning them into unrestricted attractions. Casa de Pedra also has a connection with the Festejo do Divino Espírito Santo. Ask for interpretation that distinguishes documented history, religious tradition and local stories. An advertised pilgrimage or a photograph of a painted shelter does not establish ordinary visitor access, and this guide does not provide directions to sensitive archaeological panels. Take the ultimate field guide with you: use the Snappit app to identify birds, plants, and animals on your trip.

What to do here

For a first visit, request one authorized waterfall walk and leave a separate day for a longer landscape outing if the party is comfortable with the terrain. Quarta Queda is a concrete starting point for the conversation because it has specific visitor limits. Ask whether Casa de Pedra, Visagem or Véu de Noiva can be included in a currently permitted itinerary, rather than assuming that all are open.

Seasonal info

The season changes the experience, not just the packing list. Fuller falls do not automatically mean safer bathing; lower river levels do not make every exposed beach accessible. Keep one part of a multi-day itinerary replaceable.

Accessibility

No verified step-free park circuit is offered in this guide. Discuss the specific route and every transfer before booking, especially if anyone uses a mobility aid or needs frequent rest, shade or accessible toilets.

Don't miss

1

A carefully paced waterfall outing rather than a race between several falls.

2

Casa de Pedra’s rock landscape, where authorized access allows.

3

The ecological transition between two major Brazilian biomes.

4

A separately arranged visit to the surrounding river communities.

Walks and routes

Quarta Queda: a focused waterfall day

Request a morning start and keep this as the main attraction, with transfers, briefing and a generous return margin. Under the September 2025 rule, groups at Quarta Queda are limited to 20 visitors and stays to two hours. That is a maximum at the attraction, not the total outing duration. Let the conductor decide whether conditions permit approaching the water; viewing from a safe place can be the whole activity.

Reserve a half-day local outing as an editorial budget; confirm the actual programme.

Walking surface, crossing requirements and practical assistance must be checked for the chosen access.

Casa de Pedra: landscape and interpretation

Ask for a dedicated outing to this landmark rather than adding it casually after a waterfall. Request a clear account of gradients, exposed sections, rest opportunities and the return route. Focus on the shapes of the rock shelters and the surrounding landscape from authorized areas. Any cave or archaeological access needs explicit confirmation; the presence of a conductor alone does not open every protected feature.

Keep a full day free as an editorial planning allowance, not a published walking time.

Do not interpret the formation’s elevation as the amount of climbing required; obtain a route-specific assessment.

Santa Cruz dos Martírios: a separate river-community visit

Arrange this with a local host or operator as a distinct addition outside the park itinerary. Confirm whether travel is by road, boat or both, the landing point, meals and return transport. Treat the village as a lived-in community: ask before photographing people, entering properties or joining activities. A river outing need not include rock art, and should not be sold as automatic access to island or riverbank archaeological sites.

Reserve a separate half-day or day once the host confirms the programme.

Ask about boarding steps, boat stability, assistance and toilets before accepting a boat itinerary.

Things to try

Read the landscape with children

Make the walk an observation game: compare shaded and open sections, sketch a rock outline, or listen quietly for a minute before moving on. Use photographs and drawings rather than collecting leaves, stones or fragments. A small notebook gives children something to do during rest stops without requiring extra distance.

Slow photography and bird listening

Choose one safe stopping place and let the scene change around you. Keep noise low, avoid playback and never move vegetation for a clearer picture. Ask permission before photographing community residents. Do not use a drone or enter a shelter simply because a previous visitor’s video shows it.

Stories and discoveries

Two protected areas, two purposes

Created in 1996, PESAM is a strictly protected state park. APA Araguaia is a separate sustainable-use protected area with community life and private properties. Their shared management context does not erase their different boundaries or access arrangements.

Water is a conservation story

The management plan highlights the park’s springs and the streams they feed. A waterfall is therefore more than a scenic endpoint: keeping its surroundings undisturbed also protects water systems important to neighboring communities.

A landscape with difficult recent history

The wider Araguaia region was a setting of the Guerrilha do Araguaia during Brazil’s military dictatorship. Approach local accounts respectfully, without expecting residents to discuss personal or family experiences. Ask who produced an interpretation and what evidence supports it.

When to visit

Drier months

Start early enough to enjoy the walking rather than spending all your energy on the transfer. Allow extra drinking water and shade breaks. Ask about smoke or fire-related restrictions before leaving town, and accept a shorter route when conditions demand it.

Rainy months

Allow more time for changing road and trail conditions. Ask the conductor about rain upstream, not only the sky at your meeting point. If a route or water crossing is unsuitable, choose a different authorized outing rather than trying to recover the planned mileage.

Holidays and religious gatherings

Confirm arrangements well ahead and distinguish a special organized event from ordinary tourism. No forthcoming pilgrimage date, event capacity or visitor timetable is verified here. Make accommodation and transport refundable where practical if the outing depends on approval.

Getting there and practical advice

Marabá is the practical regional gateway identified by Ideflor-Bio, followed by onward travel to São Geraldo do Araguaia. Confirm current flights or intermunicipal buses directly before booking. Avoid scheduling a park walk immediately after a long arrival journey: a delayed connection should not turn into pressure to walk late.

The official overview describes an unpaved approach of approximately 32 km from São Geraldo to a park boundary. That is not a universal trailhead distance. Obtain the exact meeting point, road condition and vehicle requirements from your conductor; different attractions can require different approaches.

The published Araguaia management contact is [email protected] and +55 (94) 99250-5009. Ask which conductors are currently authorized, how to request the visit permission and which itinerary is suitable. Contact details were checked on 22 October 2026; availability was not tested.

Ask separately about guiding, vehicle transfers, parking, any attraction charge, food and boat services. The APA regulation permits charges at some privately managed attractions; these are not evidence of a single park ticket. No current park tariff or guaranteed daily opening schedule was verified. Plan supplies and accommodation in advance, and do not depend on a staffed visitor centre, trail café, drinking-water refill or toilet at a waterfall unless specifically confirmed.

Describe functional needs rather than asking only whether the place is “accessible”. Can the person board the vehicle or boat? Are there steps, slippery crossings or places where both hands are needed? How far is the nearest usable toilet? Can the group turn back without being stranded? Ask for recent route photographs where available.

If the proposed walk is unsuitable, discuss a genuinely comfortable alternative with the host, possibly a shorter permitted nature activity or a separately arranged community visit. Do not assume that a riverside outing is automatically step-free. Confirm the actual surfaces, shade, seating and transport.

Do not jump from rocks, cross rising water or enter a pool against the conductor’s advice. Wet stone and steep edges deserve space, not a hurried photograph. Keep children within active supervision and use a properly fitted life jacket on any boat transfer. An operator’s offer of a swim is not a guarantee against changing conditions.

Leave rock art and its surroundings untouched. Do not wet, chalk, trace or rub a panel, and do not remove pottery, stone fragments or other objects. If you notice a possible archaeological find, leave it in place and tell the conductor or management. Keep away from cave wildlife and do not enter unapproved chambers.

Agree on communication, first-aid provision and evacuation arrangements before starting. Carry what you need for the whole outing; a phone or map should support, not replace, the authorized conductor. Follow management restrictions immediately. No day-specific all-clear for trails, bathing or fire conditions is implied by this guide.

Good to know before you go

Before paying, request a named itinerary, the conductor’s current authorization and written confirmation of the required park permission.

Agree on a turnaround point and a shorter alternative before departure; changing the plan early is better than exhausting the slowest walker.

Carry drinking water, food, closed walking shoes, sun and insect protection, and a waterproof bag for essentials.

Save the meeting point and arrangements offline, and tell someone outside the group when you expect to return.

Frequently asked questions

No. The park requires prior Ideflor-Bio authorization and accompaniment by authorized trail conductors. A road reaching the area, an old track file or a signposted path is not a substitute for those arrangements.
Do not assume so. A park outing, private APA attraction, boat transfer and community meal are different services. Ask for an itemized quote and confirm which payment secures which part of the visit. No current universal park admission price was verified.
Only if the exact site is expressly included in an authorized itinerary. General permission for a waterfall or community visit is not permission to inspect nearby shelters or riverbank panels. Ask for a heritage-focused explanation even if sensitive sites remain closed.
It can be, with a conductor-selected short itinerary, conservative water decisions and frequent breaks. Give the operator the children’s ages and usual walking experience. Do not book a demanding outing first and hope that carrying a tired child will solve the problem.
Neither is promised here. Confirm bathing conditions and any permitted overnight arrangement separately with management and the operator. A pool that looks calm may still be unsafe, and a rock shelter is not an invitation to camp.
