Sila National Park

The Sila is a plateau you settle into rather than a single sight you tick off.

About

The Sila is a plateau you settle into rather than a single sight you tick off. Around Cupone, forest education and the waters of Lago Cecita make an approachable first visit. Farther south, the Antonio Garcea centre introduces the woods of Sila Piccola. Lorica, beside Lago Arvo, suits a stay built around walking and lake scenery. These are alternative starting points: trying to combine all three in one day leaves too little time outside the car. Turn your visit into a safari! Use the Snappit app to scan and log wildlife sightings here.

The woodland has long supported people as well as wildlife. Timber cutting, resin and pitch production, grazing and later hydroelectric development all helped shape this landscape. Cupone’s former sawmill and Garcea’s forestry complex make that history tangible. Protection also developed in stages: the earlier Parco Nazionale della Calabria was established in 1968; Sila’s separate national park was provided for in 1997 and definitively established by the presidential decree of 14 November 2002. The forest you walk through is both habitat and a record of work.

What to do here

Start with the sort of day you actually want. Cupone suits a short, interpretive outing with children or mixed walking abilities. Choose Garcea if you are approaching from Catanzaro and want to understand how forestry shaped the mountains. Base yourself at Lorica for a longer hike, or keep the day gentle beside Lago Arvo. More energetic visitors can plan a long-distance walking stage or a demanding road-cycling leg, with the return journey arranged in advance.

Seasonal info

The lakes are reservoirs, so their margins change as water levels rise and fall. An exposed shore is not an invitation to walk across wet sediment. In any season, bring a warm layer and rain protection: a sunny coastal morning is a poor guide to conditions on the plateau.

Accessibility

Cupone and Garcea both advertise purpose-built accessible interpretation. Start with their specific adapted paths, then confirm present surface condition, access from parking, toilet availability and any assistance you need. Accessibility of one garden or trail does not describe the wider forest network.

Walks and routes

Cupone botanical garden: the shortest introduction

The published garden path is 350 metres long, almost entirely level, with wooden sleepers and a handrail. Plants are labelled in Braille and large print, with audio interpretation. Allow about 30–45 minutes to explore at your own pace; that is a suggested visit allowance, not an official walking time. The displays bring mountain vegetation within a compact area, so this is a good starting point before committing to a forest walk.

The park describes access for blind and partially sighted visitors and people with mobility impairments. Ask about the wooden surface, approach and assistance for your own needs.

Garcea’s adapted nature paths

At the Antonio Garcea centre in località Monaco, near Villaggio Mancuso, choose the educational route with its adapted section or the separate sensory interpretation for blind and partially sighted visitors. Combine a short outdoor visit with the forest museums rather than setting a distance target. Allow roughly one to two hours for that combination, depending on the rooms open and your pace.

Published features include tactile orientation, handrails and Braille information. A measured gradient, path width and complete step-free arrival route are not supplied, so request those details if needed.

Sentiero della Fiumarella: a quieter valley with a guide

From the forestry building at Caporosa, this linear route follows the Fiumarella valley toward the old Torre Fiumarella, associated with the Baracco family. The park describes 2,200 metres of unsurfaced track and 60 minutes one way. Its appeal is the mix of streamside woodland, pasture and traces of the old mountain economy. Budget for the return as well.

Despite the generally level description, the park grades it medium and reports no waymarking, drinking water or public transport. Choose a local guide or reliable current navigation; it is not presented as an accessible trail.

Lorica to Monte Botte Donato: the longer walking day

Sentiero Calabria stage 21 is 16.31 km one way, with 679 m of ascent, 112 m of descent and a published time of 4 hours 30 minutes. After an initially level stretch beside Lago Arvo, it climbs toward the saddle facing Monte Botte Donato. The listed stage ends at 1,902 m; the summit is 1,928 m. Treat those as different destinations. The official sheet lists drinking water at Lorica, so set off supplied.

Rated E, the Italian hiking grade: this is a mountain walking stage for people comfortable with sustained distance and climbing, not a short lakeside stroll.

A first day without rushing

Make Cupone the main stop, with its garden and interpretation in the morning and a picnic in the designated area by Cecita if conditions suit. Ask staff which nearby nature path fits the time and energy you have left. If you want a second day, change the experience: choose a properly planned Lorica hike, or make Garcea the focus of a separate Sila Piccola day. These are editorial combinations, not a linked marked route.

Things to try

Cycling: choose the effort before the scenery

For experienced riders, the published Lago Cecita–Silvana Mansio leg of the Ciclovia dei Parchi is 50 km, rated for very fit cyclists, with 980 m of elevation difference and a nominal three-hour riding time. It includes roads such as SP208. Plan a full outing with stops, traffic awareness, enough water and an onward journey or pickup; this is not a gentle traffic-free lake circuit. Read the official cycling-stage description.

Time beside the water

A quiet lake stop is a useful counterpoint to forest walking. The park promotes summer canoeing and sailing, but book through an operating provider and check launch rules and wind conditions for the exact lake. Reservoir scenery is not evidence of safe swimming or unrestricted access to every bank.

When the forest is better left for another day

If heavy rain, lightning or strong wind is forecast, postpone the longer trail. Garcea’s museums on forests and their relationship with people offer an indoor option when confirmed open; Cupone also has a museum. Check opening before making the drive, and avoid treating a wooded trail as shelter from a storm.

Wildlife and habitats

Pines (genus Pinus)

Pines belong to the broad genus Pinus. The tree especially associated with these woods is the local laricio pine, named Pinus nigra subsp. calabrica by the park. Its evergreen canopy helps give the plateau its character; compare it with the broad leaves and changing colours of the beech woods.

European beech

Beech becomes especially important in the higher woods. Notice how a broad-leaved canopy changes the light and autumn colour compared with the pines. The park also describes mixed beech and fir forest in Sila Piccola.

Black woodpecker

The park records breeding black woodpeckers among its forest birds. Mature woodland is part of the reason this place matters. Listen quietly from the trail; never approach a nest hole or use playback to provoke a response.

Grey wolf

Sila was one of the Italian wolf’s refuges during its twentieth-century decline. Its continued wild presence is a conservation story, not a promise of a sighting. Keep distance, do not follow animals, and never leave food out.

Stories and discoveries

A landscape made of working forests and reservoirs

The broad water views are relatively recent additions to an old inhabited plateau. Cecita, Arvo and the other main Sila lakes were created by dams. Look beyond the water and the forest: pastures, old forestry buildings and village edges help explain why conservation here also involves the people who live and work in the mountains.

When to visit

Spring

Flowers return to the meadows and woodland floor, but let snow and ground conditions decide how high to go. A visitor-centre visit is easier to shorten than a committed mountain stage.

Summer

Use the longer days for walking or cycling, carrying water even in shaded forest. Reserve equipment-led activities ahead, and change your plans if heat, fire restrictions or thunderstorms affect the chosen area.

Autumn

Choose beech woodland for seasonal colour, with waterproof footwear and enough daylight for the return. Rain makes timber walkways and leaf-covered paths less forgiving.

Winter

Treat this as a mountain trip: check road conditions, snow equipment requirements and the day’s lift information. A summer route description is not a winter walking recommendation.

Getting there and practical advice

Visitor-centre hours and bookings

At the 19 October 2026 check, Cupone’s official page advertised 09:00–19:00, changing to 08:00–18:00 in winter. Garcea advertised centre hours of 08:00–13:00 and 15:00–19:00, with museums from 10:30–13:00 and 15:00–19:00. These undated schedules need reconfirming for your visit. Cupone bookings are directed to rgpbio.it or +39 0984 76760; Garcea’s information office is +39 0961 922819.

Food, toilets and practical stops

Cupone has a designated picnic area beside Cecita; take your rubbish away. Buy your walking supplies before leaving a gateway settlement. If an accessible toilet, a particular museum or a place to eat is essential, confirm it directly rather than relying on the general description of a visitor centre.

Contacting the park

The park’s telephone-fault notice of 29 July 2026 was still displayed when checked on 19 October. For general park enquiries, use [email protected] until the authority confirms restoration. This notice concerns the park office; it does not establish that the separate visitor-centre numbers are out of service.

By car: navigate to your chosen gateway

For Cupone, the Carabinieri brochure directs drivers from SS107 via the Camigliatello exit and onward toward Lago Cecita. For the southern forests, use Garcea at località Monaco, Taverna, as your destination rather than the national-park office. The A2 and SS107 are the principal wider approach routes listed by the park. Allow for winding roads between visiting areas and check local road conditions in winter.

By rail and bus: solve the last stretch first

The park identifies Paola, Lamezia Terme, Catanzaro and Crotone as rail gateways requiring an onward journey. Ferrovie della Calabria’s timetable index lists bus lines 385A and 385B through Camigliatello and Cosenza. Check the actual timetable and service notices for your date, including the last return, then arrange the connection to Cupone or your trailhead. A bus to Camigliatello is not proof of a bus to the visitor-centre door.

Ask for the support that makes the day work

The park advertises Joëlette off-road chairs at Cupone and Garcea, used with two accompanying people. Availability, trained assistance, booking and suitable routes must be arranged in advance. At Garcea, the tactile path is a useful alternative to a long forest walk; at Cupone, start with the botanical garden. Describe your access needs when booking so staff can advise on the whole arrival-to-departure journey.

Good to know before you go

Download the official route information before leaving your accommodation. Keep an offline copy and enough battery for the return.

Carry drinking water and food on longer walks. A place name containing a spring is not confirmation of a usable drinking-water supply.

Stay on permitted paths, leave plants and fungi where they grow, and give wildlife room. Do not use food or recorded calls to draw animals closer.

Check the relevant centre or activity operator before travelling, especially outside the main summer season. Published opening hours do not guarantee that every room or path is available.

Frequently asked questions

Choose Cupone for a compact introduction to the forest beside Cecita. Garcea is the more natural starting point from the Catanzaro side. Pick Lorica if you want to stay by a lake and dedicate a day to a longer walk. You do not need to see every gateway to have a worthwhile visit.
Wolves live in the park, but a sighting is a matter of chance. Build your day around woodland and the landscape rather than an encounter. Animals in visitor-centre enclosures, where present, are managed animals and should never be mistaken for a wild sighting.
No. The published 4 hours 30 minutes covers the one-way stage toward Monte Botte Donato. The return is additional. Arrange transport or a carefully planned return walk; do not depend on a lift running merely because it appears on a map.
Yes, you can plan around services to a gateway such as Camigliatello, but the final journey to a centre or trailhead needs checking separately. Verify both directions for your exact travel date before committing to a walk.
Check first if a museum, accessible service or guided visit is important to your day. Cupone directs bookings to the Carabinieri Biodiversity service; Garcea has its own information office. Ask about admission charges, group arrangements and the sections that will actually be open.
