Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park

Come to Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park for wild Baltic shores, shallow lagoons and the chance to watch red deer or migrating cranes from public viewpoints.

About

Come to Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park for wild Baltic shores, shallow lagoons and the chance to watch red deer or migrating cranes from public viewpoints. For a first visit, choose Darßer Ort near Prerow: the walk from damp woodland onto open dunes makes the changing coastline easy to understand.

The Bodden are sheltered coastal lagoons behind the islands and peninsulas. More than 80% of this 786 km² park is water, and its visitor areas stretch from Darß and Zingst to Hiddensee and western Rügen. Pick one area for the day. The open beach, a reed-fringed lagoon and Hiddensee’s low heath each offer a different outing; trying to collect them all means spending much of your visit travelling.

At Darßer Ort, the official 3.7 km circuit starts beside the NATUREUM lighthouse museum. Boardwalks cross reeds and dunes, woodland paths pass wet alder forest, and a beach section brings you back towards the lighthouse. Pause at the observation platforms: a brown shape in the reeds may become a deer once you lift the binoculars. The circuit distance excludes getting to the lighthouse. Cars cannot reach it; approach from Prerow on foot, by bike or by horse-drawn carriage, then walk the circuit.

For wide lagoon views, head instead to Sundische Wiese east of Zingst. Pramort is about 8 km from the last car park, so returning the same way makes roughly 16 km before side trips. Cycling suits many families better than walking the entire distance, but wind and long observation stops still need time. For a shorter birdwatching visit, try Kirrblick on Zingst’s dyke or the Zarrenzin platform, reached by an approximately 100 m approach from its car park. Unlock an interactive field guide for this spot: get the Snappit app to identify nature on the go.

The national park was designated in September 1990, and its regulation took effect on 1 October, just before German reunification. Parts of today’s quiet coast had been military or state-hunting areas. Restoration continues that change: the former harbour at Darßer Ort closed in 2023, and renaturation work at the Ottosee was completed in May 2024, giving coastal processes more room again.

What to do here

Give children a small task at each stop: find one sign of moving sand, listen for a bird without speaking, or compare a diving bird with one feeding at the water’s edge. At the ticketed NATUREUM, try the Ostsee Labor’s magnifier and microscope stations, then compare the wildlife displays with what you saw outside. The lighthouse climb adds 126 steps and a wider coastal view when open. Keep animal photographs distant and let the binoculars do the approaching.

On a separate Hiddensee day, choose the 2 km Dünenheidelehrpfad starting near Hotel Heiderose between Vitte and Neuendorf. Its interpretation stops connect heath, coastal woodland and beach; allow the park’s suggested two hours, plus travel from your landing place. The 5 km Dornbusch route north of Kloster is a hillier alternative, with an uphill approach and high-shore views; the park suggests three hours. If you visit the Nationalparkhaus at Norderende 2 in Vitte, children can try animal sounds and a buzzer quiz before going outdoors.

Seasonal info

From 7 September to 1 November 2026, Sundische Wiese and Pramort allow visits without a Nationalpark-Card only from 08:00 to 15:00; leave the restricted area by 15:00. For an evening visit, obtain the limited-capacity card through Zingst tourism and follow the ranger instructions. The area is closed to everyone from sunset until 08:00. Paths around Buchhorster Maase close from 1 September through October. Check current park notices and the map before travelling; museum and ferry schedules also change seasonally.

Accessibility

The Darßer Ort circuit includes sand and natural paths as well as boardwalk, so do not treat it as a step-free circuit. The NATUREUM has a cobbled courtyard and stairs to all exhibitions. Kirrblick and Zarrenzin are designated wheelchair-accessible viewing options. Pramort’s accessible platform still requires the long 8 km approach. The exhibitions at Sundische Wiese, Vitte and Haus am Kliff are wheelchair-accessible; for Barhöft’s accessible parking, arrange access with the ranger beforehand.

Don't miss

Dornbusch

A first Darßer Ort day

Reach the lighthouse by your chosen transport, walk the circuit at a stopping pace, and add the NATUREUM if everyone still has energy. Carry lunch rather than building the whole day around café access. Save a second park region for another day.

A shorter lagoon visit

Choose Kirrblick in Zingst or the Zarrenzin platform, give everyone a turn with the binoculars, and leave while the children still want one more look. This avoids committing to Pramort’s long return trip.

Things to try

Photograph a changing coast

From the Darßer Ort route, make three different pictures: water, sand and a plant holding its place. Ask which part of the scene might look different after a storm. Stay on the path for every photograph.

A minute with your ears

At a public lagoon viewpoint, stop talking for a minute. Compare the sounds of wings, water and calls afterwards. A quiet stop can be worthwhile even when the birds are too distant to identify.

Stay near your chosen area: Sundische Wiese explains habitats and restoration, Barhöft uses illustrated characters and games, and Vitte has sounds and a family quiz. The NATUREUM is an indoor option once you reach it, but getting there still involves an outdoor journey.

Wildlife and habitats

Autumn flocks are the main attraction. Listen first, then scan from a public Bodden viewing platform. Kirrblick is a shorter-access option; Pramort needs the seasonal access planning described above.

Scan distant perches and open water from the Darßer Ort platforms. An adult’s white tail is a useful clue. Keep watching from the public route rather than searching for nests.

Search the open reeds and dune landscape slowly. In September and October, a distant roar may reveal a stag before you see it. Keep your position on the path even if the animal moves out of sight.

You may notice turned-over soil before you see a boar. Treat tracks as part of the visit, and leave any animal plenty of room; do not go into reeds to find the rest of a group.

Watch small birds running along the wash of the waves from an open public beach section. Let them feed without following them along the shoreline, and keep clear of roped-off areas.

Use binoculars to look among small waders on exposed shore. Similar species can be confusing, so a distant photograph is more useful than trying to get closer for certainty. Never search for nests.

On Hiddensee’s heath trail, look closely at the low shrubs beside the path. In the flowering season they add colour at ankle height; a close view should never require a step into the vegetation.

Look for low evergreen mats beside the Darßer Ort boardwalk. This is a good reason to point the camera down as well as towards the horizon. Leave berries and stems where they grow.

This heath is less widespread than common heather here. Use the trail information to compare plants visible from the path; wet hollows are habitat to protect, rather than places to enter for a close-up.

Look from permitted beach paths towards the dune edge for sea holly among the grasses. Use a zoom or enjoy the distant shape; entering the dunes for a photograph damages the very habitat you came to see.

Stories and discoveries

The Baltic’s tides are weak here. Weather and wind can push shallow water away and uncover the Windwatt, then cover it again. These changing feeding and resting areas belong to the protected core zone.

Leaving nature alone is central to the park, but some open heath needs care. On Hiddensee, removing encroaching trees and grazing help keep the low heath from turning into woodland.

Getting there and practical advice

Useful starting points include Sundische Wiese at Landstraße 33 east of Zingst, Nationalparkhaus Hiddensee at Norderende 2 in Vitte, and Haus am Kliff at Am Barhöfter Kliff 1 in Barhöft. Check each exhibition’s own opening; they do not share one timetable.

Use Ribnitz-Damgarten West or Barth and bus 210 for the peninsula. For Hiddensee, check FRS sailings from Schaprode and choose the correct island port. Travel from a ferry landing to the heath or Dornbusch is additional to the published trail length.

Ask about the complete journey, including ferry boarding or a long dyke approach. At Barhöft, the ranger can arrange passage along the otherwise closed Karl-Krull-Weg to the accessible parking spaces. The exhibition’s access description does not apply to the neighbouring observation tower.

Good to know before you go

Count the approach

The 3.7 km Darßer Ort loop starts at the lighthouse. Walking there from Prerow adds roughly an hour each way, depending on your starting point.

Arrange bikes early

There is no public bike hire at Schlösschen Sundische Wiese. Hire in Zingst before heading towards Pramort.

Pack for waiting

Bring binoculars, drinks, a snack and an extra windproof layer. Standing at a lookout can feel colder than walking.

Plan the last connection

Bus 210 links Ribnitz-Damgarten West and Barth with peninsula villages including Prerow and Zingst. Check your date’s departures and bicycle-carriage arrangements.

Keep to the path

Stay on signed routes, keep dogs on a lead and leave dunes and wind-exposed flats undisturbed. Drones are prohibited.

Give seals space

If a seal rests on the shore, stay at least 100 m away and keep its route to the sea clear. Do not approach or feed it.

Carry your own picnic

The NATUREUM café is for museum visitors. Do not rely on reaching it as a public café during a walk.

Choose the right landing

Hiddensee ferries serve different ports. Match the outbound and return sailing to your route and check live operator notices.

Frequently asked questions

General access to permitted national-park paths is free. Budget separately for the NATUREUM, transport and any paid activities. The autumn Nationalpark-Card controls afternoon and evening access to Sundische Wiese and Pramort; it is not a general park admission ticket.
Choose a nearby viewing platform rather than the full Pramort approach. On a wet day, the Sundische Wiese exhibition explains the changing landscape; Haus am Kliff in Barhöft has a comic bird guide and a memory game. Check opening first, especially for Barhöft weekends. On Hiddensee, the Vitte Nationalparkhaus is another family option.
Not during the stated autumn restriction: access is closed to everyone until 08:00. A Nationalpark-Card does not give overnight or pre-dawn access. Ask the park or Zingst tourism about permitted observation options.
Promise time to look and listen, rather than a particular animal. Red deer and white-tailed eagles occur around Darßer Ort, but weather, season and chance determine what you see. Tracks, changing sand and different bird behaviours make useful discoveries too.
