Robert S. Abbott Park has a significant history rooted in Chicago's post-World War II urban development. The Chicago Park District acquired the land as part of a ten-year initiative to expand recreational opportunities in underserved areas. In 1947, the creation of a park in the growing African-American community near 95th Street and Michigan Avenue was recommended by the Citizens Advisory Committee on Park Sites. The property was purchased in 1949 and 1950, with a swimming pool and recreational facility established the following year. The park is named in honor of Robert Sengstacke Abbott (1868-1940), a pivotal figure who founded the influential Chicago Defender newspaper in 1905, advocating for racial equality and encouraging the Great Migration.
