Herzogenriedpark (Mannheim)

Come to Herzogenriedpark for a day that mixes farm animals, adventurous play and a slow wander through roses.

About

Come to Herzogenriedpark for a day that mixes farm animals, adventurous play and a slow wander through roses. The park has a lived-in neighbourhood feel: children head for the climbing nets, someone practises at a sports station, and others settle beside the lawns. Begin at the Jakob-Trumpfheller-Straße entrance and turn towards the farm, where there is something to watch before the longer walk begins.

The Nutztierarche introduces old livestock breeds, including spiral-horned Zackel sheep and lively dwarf goats. They are farm animals in managed enclosures; give them time and space rather than trying to coax them closer. Further into the park, the Rosarium offers a quieter change of pace. Its gently rolling beds, benches and climbing roses reward looking at individual flowers as well as the whole garden.

Children can set the rhythm of the rest of the visit. There are connected rope-climbing domes, a cave labyrinth and a water playground shaped around miniature rivers. The water playground takes a winter break, so make the dry play areas your cool-season plan. Keep the lake and bamboo garden for a calmer stretch before heading home. Turn your visit into a safari! Use the Snappit app to scan and log wildlife sightings here.

Herzogenriedpark was one of Mannheim’s two park sites for the 1975 Federal Garden Show. The Multihalle dates from that event: architect Carlfried Mutschler worked with Frei Otto on its flowing timber-grid roof. Intended as a temporary building, it survived and received protected-monument status in 1998. Its restoration is a separate project, with no normal sightseeing access at present.

What to do here

For a short visit, enter at Jakob-Trumpfheller-Straße/Hochuferstraße, follow the public path beside the farm enclosures and turn towards the Konzertmuschel and Große Spielwiese. Watch the animals, choose a play stop, then return to the same entrance. Bonifatiuskirche is a useful nearby tram stop; allow for the pavement walk and road crossings in both directions. Trams 4/4A currently skip Mannheim Hauptbahnhof during Kaiserring works, expected until 6 November 2026, so use the live RNV planner for your station connection.

With more time, continue west to the Rosarium, then follow the open paths towards the lake and bamboo garden. Return through the park to your original gate, adding the motor-skills course or climbing area if everyone still has energy. These are flexible sequences, with no fixed measured distance. Paths and ramps make gentler choices possible; the garden also has low rises, and climbing or cave play is a separate activity.

The Max-Joseph-Straße entrance is permanently closed. The Multihalle area is a construction site, so keep outside its barriers and do not use it as a shortcut or wet-weather stop.

Seasonal info

The water playground’s current notice announces its winter break from 23 September. Check the operator’s page for reopening before making water play the reason for your trip. Roses depend on the weather, and a winter visit has a different focus. Wet leaves, frost and uneven paths need care; follow any weather or maintenance closures.

Accessibility

The operator describes an accessible path network, ramped approaches and wheelchair-compatible exits. The Rosarium is gently undulating, with largely accessible paths; sections of natural-stone paving may feel uneven. Use the open entrances and ask about the route that suits your wheelchair or pushchair. The “Toilette für alle” in the sports changing building has a changing bench and mobile hoist, accessed with a Euro-WC key. Bring your own hoist sling. Check the current approach and facilities with visitor services on 0621 410050, particularly around construction.

Walks and routes

Farm and one play stop

Start at the Jakob-Trumpfheller-Straße gate, pass the farm enclosures and continue towards the Konzertmuschel. Choose part of the nearby play area, then return along the open paths to the gate.

Use ramped main paths. Ask staff about any temporary barriers and the easiest link between your chosen stops; play structures are not an accessible through-route.

Farm and one play stop

Roses, lake and bamboo

From Jakob-Trumpfheller-Straße, cross the southern part of the park towards the Rosarium. Continue past the water-play area towards the lake and bamboo garden, then return through the park to the same gate. Use the park map to shorten the walk whenever you want.

Let children choose the second stop

Begin with the farm, then offer a choice between climbing and a garden walk. A snack at the Konzertmuschel can be the halfway point. Keeping one part optional makes it easier to finish the walk back to your gate without a tired last stretch.

Things to try

Build a tiny river

When water play is open, follow a channel from its source and see what happens when you change a dam. Try one change at a time, then watch where the water goes. The Rhine-and-Neckar setting gives children a link between this game and Mannheim’s real rivers.

A rose close-up challenge

Choose two flowers that look quite different. Photograph each from the path, then compare the petals and read any labels. Look for labels such as “Novalis” or the orange-red “Vulcano”; the display changes through the season.

Keepers know the animals

If an animal walk is running, let the keeper set the pace and explain the rules. Children can think of one question about what an animal eats or how it is cared for. Watch from the public side of the enclosure when there is no organised activity.

Keep a rainy visit short

There is no dependable indoor day-out alternative within this plan. For light rain, use waterproofs and shorten the farm-and-garden walk. Save slippery climbing equipment for better conditions; the Multihalle is unavailable as a shelter or indoor attraction.

Wildlife and habitats

Watch the dwarf goats from the public path and look for a quiet moment when one pauses. Try to include its climbing surroundings in the photograph. Leave the feeding and care to the keepers.

Pause at the donkey enclosure and compare the animals with the nearby ponies if both are visible. A side-on picture can show the ears and body shape clearly without calling or offering food.

Watch the chickens going about their own business before taking a picture. Compare feather patterns between individuals; a colour difference does not by itself tell you the breed.

The farm’s ponies are domestic horses. Look from the public viewing area, or listen to the keeper during an organised walk. Do not assume a ride or a chance to touch is included.

Look for the turkey enclosure near the animal-walk meeting point. Photograph from the public side and let the birds choose whether to come into view. These are kept farm birds, not wild sightings.

Stories and discoveries

The rose garden was rebuilt from below

The 2022 renewal involved replacing soil as well as reorganising beds and paths. New varieties were selected partly for their ability to cope with dry periods, heavy rain and pests. The planting is worth revisiting as it develops.

A light roof with a long story

The Multihalle’s shape comes from a curving grid of timber strips. While the building is closed for restoration, the official Multihalle website offers a virtual tour if you would like to explore its architecture from home.

When to visit

Change the focus with the season

In summer, give the roses and water playground more time. In autumn and winter, make it animals, leaf shapes and one dry play stop. The lake and bamboo planting offer a quieter pause between the active areas.

Getting there and practical advice

Kiosks and a picnic backup

There are kiosks at the Konzertmuschel and the Dreiflüsse water playground, with outdoor seating. Their opening can differ from the park’s, so bring drinking water and a snack. The park map marks toilets, accessible toilets and the changing-place facility.

Choose Bonifatiuskirche for this entrance

Trams 4 and 4A serve Bonifatiuskirche, but they skip Mannheim Hauptbahnhof during the Kaiserring diversion from 14 September until an expected 6 November 2026. Plan your station connection for the day rather than relying on the usual direct service. From the stop, follow the street approach to Jakob-Trumpfheller-Straße/Hochuferstraße and check your return direction before leaving. Use the live RNV planner for your date. If arriving by car, navigate to Jakob-Trumpfheller-Straße rather than the old Max-Joseph address. Check local parking signs and allow time to walk to the gate.

Check the whole visit

For the changing-place toilet, bring a Euro-WC key and your own compatible hoist sling. The facility listing notes that its adjustable bench has no side rails. Confirm the equipment and route before travelling if these details are essential to your visit.

Frequently asked questions

The regular schedule is 09:00–21:00 from April to October and 09:00–19:00 from November to March, with last admission one hour before closing. Standard day tickets are €5 for adults and €3 for ages 6–15. Under-sixes enter free but still need a ticket. Check the operator’s page before travel; separate events can have different prices.
They are separate parks run by the same organisation. Herzogenriedpark is in Neckarstadt. Its website now sits within the Luisenpark site, but a Herzogenriedpark day ticket is for this park. For arrival, use the Herzogenriedpark entrance details rather than the Luisenpark address in the website footer.
The farm advertises a Thursday animal walk at 14:00, meeting at the fountain opposite the turkey enclosure, with no extra activity charge. Confirm that it is running before you plan around it. It is cancelled in poor weather, and the keeper decides whether touching an animal is appropriate.
Yes, reserve a court through the official shop. Court hire is charged separately from park admission, and keys are collected at the Konzertmuschel kiosk. Bring your booking confirmation and park ticket.
