The land that is now Martin Luther King Jr. Recreational Park was acquired by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) in 1976. The park was subsequently developed in three distinct stages, officially opening its doors to the public in 1986. The park's namesake, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is connected to Silver Spring through Willie Pearl Mackey King, his former secretary, who resided in the area and famously typed his "Letter from Birmingham Jail."
