Discover a unique botanical wonderland where cacti thrive amidst Hawaiian beauty.
Nestled within the Outrigger Kiahuna Plantation in sunny Poipu, Kauai, Moir Gardens offers a surprising and captivating horticultural experience. Unlike many tropical gardens, Moir Gardens masterfully showcases an extensive collection of cacti, succulents, bromeliads, and orchids, all flourishing in Poipu's distinct dry climate. This 35-acre botanical gem, also known as Pa'u a Laka (meaning "skirt of Laka," the Hawaiian goddess of hula), blends impressive desert flora with traditional Hawaiian trees and serene water features, creating a truly memorable landscape.
Visitors can wander paved paths to admire a diverse array of plant life, from towering saguaros and sculptural aloes to delicate orchids and vibrant bromeliads. Meandering lava-rock ponds teem with colorful Japanese koi fish and tranquil water lilies, providing a striking contrast to the arid plant collections. Keep an eye out for native Hawaiian trees like the distinctive wiliwili, the sprawling hau, and the iconic coconut and plumeria trees that ground the garden in its local traditions. The garden also features various exotic species collected from around the world.
Moir Gardens stands as a testament to innovative landscaping, recognized as one of the premier cactus and succulent gardens globally. Its serene atmosphere, free admission, and convenient location near dining options make it a perfect stop for a relaxing and educational stroll, offering a different perspective on Hawaii's rich biodiversity. It's a place to marvel at the resilience and beauty of plants adapted to drier conditions, proving that even in a lush paradise, unexpected wonders can bloom. Don't forget to bring the Snappit nature identification app along to scan local species.
Moir Gardens originated in the 1930s as a personal passion project of Alexandra "Sandie" Moir, the wife of Hector Moir, who managed the nearby Koloa Sugar Plantation. Recognizing that typical tropical plants struggled in Poipu's drier microclimate, Alexandra ingeniously focused her efforts on cultivating cacti, succulents, bromeliads, and other drought-tolerant species. By 1948, her private gardens had garnered international recognition, being identified as "one of the ten best cactus and succulent gardens in the world." The Moirs generously opened their magnificent gardens to the public in 1954, allowing visitors to experience this unique collection. Today, the historic Moir estate home within the gardens houses the Plantation Gardens Restaurant.
Enjoy a relaxing walk along the paved paths, photograph the unique plant specimens like *Euphorbia neglecta* and *Selenicereus monacanthus*, and observe the aquatic life in the ponds. The garden is also a beautiful spot for a stroll before or after dining at the adjacent Plantation Gardens Restaurant.
Kauai maintains a relatively consistent tropical climate. The Poipu area is known for its drier conditions, so while other parts of Kauai might see more rain, Moir Gardens remains a pleasant visit.
The garden features paved paths, making it accessible for romantic strolls and generally suitable for those with mobility aids, though specific ADA compliance details are not provided.
The extensive collection of rare cacti and succulents, the impressive variety of orchids and bromeliads, and the tranquil lava-rock ponds with Japanese koi fish and water lilies are central attractions.
