Sejong Lake Park

The pleasure here is choosing your own balance of movement and stopping.

About

The pleasure here is choosing your own balance of movement and stopping. A lake view and one island-side detour can make a satisfying visit; a longer outing takes in changing shorelines and landscaped paths. Keep the lake as your focus when planning. The adjoining Central Park and National Sejong Arboretum are separate destinations, so their sports grounds, gardens and indoor attractions should be added as extra visits rather than folded into your lake walk. Turn your visit into a safari! Use the Snappit app to scan and log wildlife sightings here.

The park partially opened on 3 December 2012 and fully opened on 2 May 2013. Its artificial islands give a civic lake several different roles: performance space, festival venue, seasonal family water play and planted aquatic landscapes. The design makes this a managed urban park, with working water systems and maintained paths rather than an untouched wetland.

What to do here

Start with the [official park map](https://sjfmc.or.kr/sjpark/sub01_03_03.do) and choose either a short out-and-back or the signed lake circuit. Water Flower Island is the main deck-and-aquatic-plant stop; Wetland Island adds another planted-water setting. For architecture, look toward Water Stage Island from the shore, then decide whether to cross the bridge. A performance is a separate reason to visit and depends on the event programme.

Seasonal info

Spring planting and autumn colour give different reasons to revisit the tree-lined paths. In summer, carry water and sun protection, and make water play conditional on the season’s operating notice. In winter or after frost, shorten the walk if decks or bridge approaches are slippery.

Accessibility

Korea Tourism Organization lists step-free park access, accessible parking and accessible toilets. That does not make every island approach equally easy: its more detailed walking feature flags the steep gradient of Seho Bridge to Water Stage Island. A shore-only outing is the simpler option if gradients are a concern; confirm your entrance and toilet needs with the operator.

Walks and routes

The signed lake circuit

The operator identifies a 4.4 km circular pedestrian course and added distance boards in March 2026. Join it from a convenient entrance, identify your starting junction, and follow the pedestrian signs around the lake. Boards at places such as the central plaza, Festival Island, Wetland Island and Wind Hill help you judge progress without treating every island as a compulsory stop. Allow 90–120 minutes with short breaks. This allowance excludes a substantial performance stop.

Use the current route boards and ask about step-free alternatives before adding a bridge or deck detour. Ask park staff about current surfaces, gradients and temporary barriers along your intended section before setting out.

The signed lake circuit

A shorter shore-and-deck visit

For a gentler first visit, stay near your chosen entrance and use the map to select one nearby interest: a view toward Water Stage Island or an open section of Water Flower Island’s decks. Spend 45–75 minutes walking out, stopping and retracing your route. Choose the turnaround point before anyone gets tired; there is no need to reach the opposite shore. This is a flexible visit suggestion, so no fixed distance is assigned.

Keep to the shore if Seho Bridge’s gradient is unsuitable. Check the actual deck entrance before committing a wheelchair or stroller to it, and allow enough room to turn back.

A shorter shore-and-deck visit

Build a relaxed half-day

Make the lake your first outdoor stop, with either the short outing or the circular course. Pause for a drink only if the café’s hours fit, then decide whether you still want a separate nearby attraction. This works better than trying to cover the lake, all five themed islands and the neighbouring arboretum in a single rushed walk.

Things to try

Water Stage Island

The performance building takes its shape from a river-smoothed pebble. It is worth viewing as part of the lake’s composition even when no show is scheduled. Before crossing Seho Bridge, check both access and the gradient; the shoreline gives you another way to enjoy the structure.

Water Flower Island and Wetland Island

These are the park’s most focused aquatic-plant settings. Water Flower Island has deck paths among the planting, while Wetland Island is presented as a place to observe aquatic habitats. Stay on the open paths and leave plants undisturbed. A visible flower or bird is a bonus, not a guaranteed seasonal display.

Festival Island and Water Play Island

Festival Island provides space for cultural events. Water Play Island combines a sandy setting with seasonal water-play facilities. Choose these for an event or family programme only after checking the relevant notice; their names do not promise a performance, an operating pool or unrestricted access every day.

An evening lake view

Arrive with enough daylight to understand your return route, then enjoy the illuminated waterside setting. Keep a short visit centred on a familiar entrance if you do not want to navigate a longer circuit after dark. Fountain operation and decorative lighting are separate things.

When the weather turns

Shorten the walk and return by a familiar open route when rain, strong wind or thunder makes the waterfront uncomfortable. Do not treat an exposed bridge as a place to wait out bad weather. If you plan to use Songdammanri café as a break, check its hours first; it is not an all-hours shelter.

Wildlife and habitats

Ginkgo in the planted landscape

The operator names a ginkgo-themed walk among the park’s landscaped paths. These trees are planted as part of the park landscape and add interest to a seasonal stroll. Use on-site tree labels for close identification, and leave leaves and seeds where they are.

Stories and discoveries

Several kinds of landscape in one walk

The themed walks include pine, cherry, ginkgo and fringe-tree planting, alongside other landscaped areas. They offer a useful way to choose a seasonal emphasis without needing to complete a botanical checklist. Follow the labels on site rather than assuming every tree beside a named path is the same species.

When to visit

Water-feature update: 18 October 2026

An operator notice suspends Haengbok Waterfall, Cheongeumji, Cheongeum Waterfall, the landscape pond and plaza fountain from 16 September 2026 until pump repairs finish. Check for a reopening before making these your main destination. Separately, Water Play Island’s 2026 season ended early in August after heavy rain. Neither notice says the whole park is closed. Read the repair notice and water-play notice.

Maintenance and event timing

For March–October 2026, the operator schedules mosquito-control fogging on Fridays, 09:00–10:00, subject to weather. Avoid the active work area, particularly with children or respiratory sensitivity. An event is also scheduled at Eco Platform and Pureun Deulpan on 24 October, 13:00–18:00; allow for local activity and check its notice if attending. Event details and access arrangements can change.

Getting there and practical advice

Food, toilets and a rest stop

The operator lists toilets and a shop near the management centre. That shop’s published hours are 11:00–21:00 daily. Songdammanri café, near Wind Hill, is listed as 10:00–19:00 with Monday closure; the shop by Pureun Deulpan is listed vacant. Carry what you need rather than planning an early breakfast or late supper around park concessions. Recheck opening hours before making a special stop.

Fountains have their own timetable

For October 2026, the dated notice schedules the lake’s submerged fountains at 12:00 on weekdays and 14:00 and 16:00 on weekends and public holidays, for about 20 minutes per session. Weather and site conditions can stop a session. This timetable does not override the separate pump-repair suspension below, and it does not describe Central Park’s fountains. Check the fountain notice.

Find the correct arrival point

Use Sejong Lake Park, 216 Dasom-ro, Sejong-dong, as the venue name and address. For driving, select a numbered Lake Park car park rather than the management office’s wider-complex address. Check parking signs and event directions on arrival. If you need accessible parking, ask specifically about the route from Car Park 1 to your chosen shore section.

Bus planning

The operator gives B2 from Banseok Station to Government Complex Sejong as one approach from Daejeon, followed by a walk. National Library of Korea, Sejong is another nearby stop name used in its directions. Use the Sejong bus journey planner for your actual origin, departure time and return trip; do not assume a route in an older travel account still runs unchanged.

Plan around the bridge, not just the entrance

The specific KTO accessibility listing reports step-free access, accessible toilets and accessible parking. Its older detailed feature recommends Car Park 1 and identifies Seho Bridge as the difficult gradient. Treat this as a planning lead, not a current surface survey: ask the park at 044-850-4370 about construction, the nearest usable toilet and a shore-only route. Do not rely on off-site wheelchair or stroller lending without checking where it is available and whether it can be used for your visit.

A café-specific accessible option

KTO’s separate Songdammanri café record lists wheelchair access, a lift and an accessible toilet. These are useful when the café is open; they are not a promise of round-the-clock toilet access or a step-free link from every part of the lake. Confirm the approach that fits your arrival point.

Good to know before you go

Check the operator’s notices before leaving, especially if a fountain, event or water-play session is your main reason to go.

Choose a named entrance or numbered car park for meeting friends; “the lake” is too broad a rendezvous.

Keep walkers and runners on the pedestrian route and bicycles on the designated cycleway.

Bring drinking water for an early or late visit, when shops may be closed.

Keep children close to you when walking near the water, and stop for photographs away from moving pedestrians.

Use the posted diversions whenever maintenance or event barriers interrupt your intended path.

Frequently asked questions

General park entry is free, with published opening hours of 05:00–23:00 year-round. The operator lists evening park and landscape lighting until 23:00. Individual businesses, events and water facilities follow separate schedules; leave time to reach your exit before closing.
No. Pick a shore section from your arrival point and return the same way. The 4.4 km figure belongs to the operator’s circular pedestrian course; a bridge or island detour may change your own distance. Use the on-site boards to judge how much farther you want to go.
No. Park rules prohibit entering the lake and fishing. Water Play Island is a separate seasonal facility with its own controls; its presence does not make the surrounding lake a swimming area.
Dogs must be controlled on a lead kept within 2 metres, with waste removed and applicable muzzle rules followed. Bring ready-to-eat picnic food rather than cooking equipment. Shade tents are allowed only under the current designated-zone rules; a general park visit is not permission to camp.
