Erlebnis-Zoo Hannover

Visit Erlebnis-Zoo Hannover for a day that moves between African riverbanks, a Canadian-style harbour and elephant-filled palace scenery.

About

Visit Erlebnis-Zoo Hannover for a day that moves between African riverbanks, a Canadian-style harbour and elephant-filled palace scenery. The themed buildings make each area feel different, while underwater windows, climbing paths and play stops give children plenty of ways to explore. Pick up the zoo plan at the entrance and choose two favourite animals before you set off; there is enough here to fill a whole day.

Sambesi makes an inviting first stop. In summer, the included boat ride takes you past African animal enclosures without more walking. Afterwards, stop at Hippo Canyon to look through the underwater glass. Compare what you can see from the bank with the animals’ movements below the surface. Elsewhere in Sambesi, the lodge offers a broad view over the savanna enclosure, and the petting area brings sheep and dwarf goats within reach under the zoo’s rules.

In Afi Mountain, slow down for chimpanzees, drills and western lowland gorillas. The rock openings around the drill enclosure encourage careful looking: animals may be beside the path or climbing higher up. At Yukon Bay, follow the harbour scenery to the Yukon Queen and its underwater viewing area. Watch a penguin’s flippers or a polar bear’s paws at work, then find the Meer Müll exhibition about marine litter. The harbour’s penguins are African penguins; the Canadian setting is part of the zoo’s storytelling.

Save some attention for the smaller animals. The Amphibium has live frogs, newts and salamanders, alongside listening games and breeding displays. Nearby in the Zoologicum, Aldabra giant tortoises returned in August 2026 to the new Reptilium. Meyers Hof adds a different kind of conservation story: historic Lower Saxon farm buildings surround rare domestic breeds, with the Brodelburg adventure playground ready for a proper break. Hannover’s zoo opened on 4 May 1865 after a citizens’ initiative raised funds. Today’s themed layout grew from the Zoo 2000 redevelopment: the Dschungelpalast opened in 1997, Meyers Hof in 1998 and Sambesi in 2000. Yukon Bay and the Outback followed in 2010; the Zoologicum opened in 2023 and the Amphibium in 2024.

What to do here

For a full day, start in Sambesi and take the boat if it is running. Continue through Afi Mountain to Yukon Bay, leaving time for both the outdoor animal views and the underwater windows. After lunch, follow the zoo plan to the Dschungelpalast for Asian elephants and the Himalayan red-panda area. Continue through the Outback, with emus and kangaroos, towards the Zoologicum, Amphibium and Meyers Hof. This suggested order uses the zoo’s visitor paths; you can shorten it at any stage.

For a gentler visit, choose Sambesi and Afi Mountain, or focus on the Zoologicum, Amphibium and farm playground. At the Amphibium, try identifying frog calls in the digital listening game, then look closely for the black-and-yellow fire salamanders in the living displays. With older children, download one of the zoo’s free animal-behaviour or Yukon Bay discovery sheets before arriving.

Seasonal info

Summer opening runs daily from 09:00 to 18:30 until 25 October 2026. The published winter season is 27 October 2026–19 March 2027, Tuesday–Sunday, 09:00–16:00; plan around the usual Monday closure. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing. The Sambesi boats do not run in winter. On 15 November 2026, ordinary day and annual tickets cannot be used because the zoo is reserved for invited event guests. Check the opening page before travel. The Dschungelpalast extension is under construction; the new elephant hall is still being built.

Accessibility

The zoo lists wide paths, step-free access to every building and gradients of up to approximately 10%. Some themed paths are uneven, and Afi Mountain involves a climb. Accessible toilets are available throughout the themed areas, including a care toilet in Yukon Bay. Reserve a free manual wheelchair online by 16:00 on the previous day. The summer boats accept conventional wheelchairs with staff assistance, but cannot take electric wheelchairs. Ask the Service-Point which route best suits your mobility and any current building works.

Don't miss

1

Sambesi from the water

Take the included summer boat ride, then compare the hippos’ above-water and underwater views at Hippo Canyon.

2

Yukon Queen windows

Watch polar bears and African penguins in the water, with a marine-litter exhibition nearby.

3

Afi Mountain primates

Spend time with drills, chimpanzees and western lowland gorillas instead of hurrying between viewing openings.

4

Little animals and big play

Combine the Amphibium and Reptilium with rare farm breeds and the Brodelburg playground at Meyers Hof.

Walks and routes

A full day through the themed areas

Sambesi → Afi Mountain → Yukon Bay → Dschungelpalast → Outback → Zoologicum and Meyers Hof. Build in an animal-watching pause and a proper lunch stop; use the zoo plan to shorten the day before children tire.

Step-free building access does not remove the outdoor slopes. Ask at the entrance for the easiest route, and remember that electric wheelchairs cannot board the summer boats.

Things to try

Listen first, then look

Try the Amphibium’s digital frog-call game together. Afterwards, choose a live amphibian and watch quietly for a movement of its throat, feet or eyes. The sound game is a learning activity; it is separate from the animals in the tanks.

One animal, three actions

At Afi Mountain, let each child choose one visible primate. Look for three actions, such as feeding, climbing and grooming. If the animal rests, draw its posture instead of trying to make it move.

A smaller indoor-focused visit

Pair the Amphibium with the neighbouring Reptilium for a shorter outing in unsettled weather. Add the Yukon Queen if everyone is happy with the outdoor walk; the three buildings are not connected under cover.

Wildlife and habitats

Watch from the outdoor views and then the Yukon Queen windows. A bear may be swimming, digging or resting out of sight; leave time to return rather than waiting for a particular action.

Compare the penguins standing ashore with those passing the underwater windows. Look for the pink skin near their eyes and notice how the wings become flippers in the water.

Try the Hippo Canyon underwater window after looking from the bank or summer boat. Watch for the moment an animal pushes up towards the surface to breathe.

Look through several rock openings and above eye level. If two drills are grooming, watch the careful hand movements: grooming also helps maintain their social relationships.

Pause near the chimpanzee enclosure and watch how an animal uses its hands to investigate food or climbing supports. Let the group’s activity set the pace of your stop.

Hannover’s gorillas are western lowland gorillas. Watch a single animal for a few minutes and compare feeding, resting and contact with other group members.

Watch the trunk’s precision as an elephant explores or handles food. Look for the single finger-like tip; use the current visitor viewpoints around the Dschungelpalast building works.

Look along branches as well as at ground level. A resting red panda may be easiest to notice by its bushy ringed tail before you see the reddish body.

Look carefully in the woodland-style display and compare the yellow markings when more than one animal is visible. These are captive animals in a conservation-breeding setting.

Check the warmhouse and, in suitable summer conditions, the adjoining outdoor enclosure. Follow the slow movement of the neck and legs without calling or tapping to attract attention.

Getting there and practical advice

Choose a comfortable meal stop

The Yukon Market Hall fits naturally into the middle of the circuit; the Hoflokal pairs well with a farm-and-playground finish. Some smaller food outlets open only on busy days, so keep a snack with you. Locate your next toilet on the zoo plan before settling into a long animal stop.

Good to know before you go

Find the visitor entrance

Use Adenauerallee 1, 30175 Hannover. The administration’s address is different. The zoo car park is paid and has a 2 m height limit.

Come by public transport

Stadtbahn 11 runs from Kröpcke to the Zoo terminus; buses 128, 134 and 900 connect the main-station forecourt with the zoo. Check the current ÜSTRA timetable.

Choose your ticket carefully

Online date-specific tickets usually cost less than buying on arrival. Their visit date cannot be changed. Compare the Flexi option if your plans may move, and read validity and cancellation terms before paying.

Bring a picnic

Your own food and non-alcoholic drinks are welcome. Eat in permitted park areas, away from restaurant seating and presentation audiences. There is no dedicated picnic meadow.

Plan for small legs

Bring a pushchair or reserve a paid handcart. Scooters, balance bikes and bicycles are not allowed inside. Waterproofs are useful even when you plan several indoor stops.

Use the family facilities

Baby-changing tables are in the toilet facilities. Baby-food microwaves are available in the Yukon Market Hall and Hoflokal; the entrance Service-Point provides wristbands for a parent’s phone number.

Keep animals comfortable

Stay on visitor paths and behind barriers. Never offer your own food. Touch animals only in the designated petting area and follow the signs and staff instructions.

Photograph with care

Make pictures for your private family collection and respect other visitors’ privacy. Ask the zoo before using photographs beyond private purposes; wider use requires written permission.

Frequently asked questions

The Amphibium, Reptilium and Yukon Queen underwater area offer covered stops. You still walk outdoors between them, so bring rainwear and choose fewer areas if the weather is persistent.
Yes, with a separate dog ticket and a lead. Each dog needs its own responsible handler. Dogs cannot enter animal houses, including the tropical house, so arrange who will stay outside with yours.
A normal ticket allows one entry. If an urgent interruption is necessary, speak to the Service-Point before leaving so staff can help with re-entry.
