Three stops, three observations
Choose the bear, one owl and the alpacas. At each stop, let everyone name an observed movement, sound or resting position. Use the audioguide for context, then compare notes over your picnic.

Come to Bischofswerda for unhurried animal watching in a zoo small enough to revisit your favourites. The roughly one-hectare park sits among mature trees in the town centre. Bears give it a clear theme, but the owls and domestic animals deserve time too. At the entrance, check the zoo plan and ask how to use the audioguide.
Give the bear and lynx enclosures a patient first look, then change pace with the alpacas, donkey or dwarf goats. A playground and picnic benches make it easy to fit watching around children's energy levels. The park's operator, Lebenshilfe Bischofswerda, places social inclusion at the heart of its work. Be ready to snap and learn! Get the Snappit app to identify any nature species you find here.
The park dates from 1957 and grew from the voluntary work of local enthusiasts. Brown bears arrived in 1980 and later became the central theme of its visitor experience. Lebenshilfe took over its operation in the 2000s, linking animal care and education with opportunities for people with disabilities. That connection continues at the Bärencafé, whose redevelopment created additional jobs for people with disabilities.
Let each child choose one animal to return to later. Compare a bear's way of moving with a lynx's, then look for differences between the little owl and snowy owl. Read the enclosure signs together. The dwarf-goat contact enclosure, playground and tactile path add variety; follow the rules at each stop. For a guided visit, book ahead: the family-focused Tierische Führung lasts about 90 minutes and can include supervised activities with domestic animals.
Normal opening is daily, 09: 00–18:00 from April through October and 09:00–17:00 from November through March, or until darkness falls. Start earlier in winter. The Bärencafé has its own seasonal hours, so bring a snack if you are relying on a food stop. Check current notices and event times before travelling.
The zoo plan marks accessible toilets, including one by the entrance. With a wheelchair, walker or pushchair, ask about path surfaces, thresholds and the easiest access to your priority enclosures. Call 03594 703467 to discuss your needs or arrange a tour adapted for visitors with disabilities.
Make the brown bears and lynx your first priorities, with time to return if they are resting out of sight.
Look for little owls as well as snowy owls. The park has bred little owls for a reintroduction project outside Bischofswerda.
Plan roughly 1½–2 hours for animal watching, the dwarf-goat enclosure and a playground stop in this one-hectare park.
Ask at the entrance about the audioguide, or book a keeper-led family tour ahead of time.
Choose the bear, one owl and the alpacas. At each stop, let everyone name an observed movement, sound or resting position. Use the audioguide for context, then compare notes over your picnic.
Book one of the operator’s approximately one-hour alpaca walks if you want a longer outing. Options include the old brickworks and the Bürgerteiche. These walks use a mixture of town streets and field or woodland paths; ask which outing suits your group and mobility needs.
Choose a few favourite enclosures and bring waterproofs. Ask whether the café is open before counting on a sheltered break. For a pre-booked guided or educational activity, check the bad-weather plan with the team.
If a bear is visible, follow what it does with its paws and nose. A later second look is worthwhile if it is initially out of sight.
Look for still shapes before searching for movement. Compare the lynx’s outline with the bear’s; stay behind the barrier even for a better photograph.
Read the little-owl sign together and connect this bird with the park’s breeding work for the Harz reintroduction project. The birds on display here are captive.
Compare its size, colour and posture with the little owl. Let a resting bird stay restful; never knock or call to make it move.
Look for the Steppenfuchs sign. If the fox is visible, sketch its ears and body outline, then compare it with the lynx.
Follow one raccoon quietly if you can. Notice how it explores its enclosure, and compare those movements with the bear’s.
Watch the alpacas during an ordinary zoo visit. To spend longer with them, arrange a separate guided walk before travelling.
Meet the park’s dwarf domestic goats in the contact enclosure. Follow staff instructions, give animals room to move away and wash hands before your picnic.
These are captive zoo animals. An enclosure on the plan does not promise that its residents will be visible during your visit.
The park also participates in a European conservation breeding programme for Ecuador amazons. A new pair was brought together in 2018 and bred successfully the following year.
The zoo plan identifies a playground, tactile path, Bärencafé and toilets; picnic benches are available too. Bring food as a backup outside café hours.
