Appennino Lucano–Val d’Agri–Lagonegrese National Park

The park covers roughly 690 square kilometres, entirely in Basilicata, with territory in 29 municipalities of the province of Potenza.

About

The park covers roughly 690 square kilometres, entirely in Basilicata, with territory in 29 municipalities of the province of Potenza. Its scale is the first thing to understand: Laurenzana’s forest, the upper Agri Valley and the Sirino mountains are different outings. Give yourself time to enjoy one area instead of spending the day crossing between distant stops. Start with the kind of day you want: tall trees and a long woodland walk, archaeology with gentler valley exploring, or an experienced-hiker ascent above Lago Laudemio. Don't forget to bring the Snappit nature identification app along to scan local species.

The national park was established in 2007, but its landscapes have much older human connections. In the Agri Valley, Grumentum preserves the outline of a Roman city; the museum puts its remains into a longer local story. At Viggiano, the pilgrimage to the Black Madonna links the town with Sacro Monte. The park publishes a 10 km, medium-difficulty route with 747 m of elevation difference for that ascent. May and September are particularly associated with the pilgrimage tradition, but check the year’s arrangements before planning around a procession.

What to do here

Use the official walking routes below to choose one main outing. Leave time for a village meal, a museum or simply a slower return. The valley’s cultural stops are worthwhile in their own right, particularly when the summits disappear into cloud.

Seasonal info

Treat snow, ice, thunderstorms and poor visibility as reasons to change a mountain plan. In autumn, leave a generous daylight margin. Carry waterproofs and a warm layer even when the forecast looks inviting; check conditions again on the morning of your walk.

Accessibility

A short visit to a village or museum is the strongest lower-effort alternative to a mountain walk. Grumentum’s operator states that the museum and archaeological site are accessible to visitors with mobility disabilities; confirm the particular route and assistance you need before travelling.

Walks and routes

Sentiero dell’abetina di Laurenzana

The park lists 12 km and about 5 hours, with medium difficulty. This is a substantial woodland outing, not a quick stop beneath the firs. The listed elevation range is 1,121–1,280 m; that difference is not the total climbing. Allow extra time for stops and use the official route page to discuss the exact start and current waymarking with a guide.

No audited wheelchair or pushchair specification is supplied for this trail. Its modest elevation range should not be read as a step-free guarantee.

Sentiero dell’abetina di Laurenzana

Sorgente Copone to Monte Volturino

This route climbs from Sorgente Copone in Marsicovetere to Monte Volturino. Crucially, the official 11.5 km is one-way; the published walking time is 4 hours 20 minutes, and the grade is E, medium hiking difficulty. It is not an 11.5 km return outing. Agree your descent or onward plan before starting, and read the official itinerary rather than borrowing the figures from another Volturino route.

This is a mountain hike with a separate return to plan, not a lower-effort sightseeing walk.

Sorgente Copone to Monte Volturino

Lago Laudemio and Monte Papa

The park’s 9.8 km itinerary starts and finishes at Lago Laudemio, with a published time of 5 hours 30 minutes and an experienced-hiker rating. From the lake, the route rises through beech woodland towards the high Monte Papa ridge. The reward is the change from enclosed forest to open mountain country. The official route page is the planning reference; its total describes the mountain circuit, not a lakeside stroll.

The summit route is unsuitable as a casual accessible walk. A shorter lake visit needs its own check of parking, surfaces and access-road conditions.

Lago Laudemio and Monte Papa

Scavi Grumentum to Bosco Maglie

The park gives this valley outing 7.66 km, about 2 hours 30 minutes and an easy classification, with the archaeological excavations as the start and Bosco Maglie as the finish. It is the gentler option among these four hikes, though still a meaningful distance. Check how you will return and whether your chosen start requires archaeological-site entry. Time spent inside the museum or exploring the excavations is additional. See the official walking description.

The attraction’s mobility-access statement does not certify the separate Bosco Maglie hiking route. Ask specifically about trail surface and gradients.

A manageable two-day introduction

Spend the first day around Grumento Nova: the museum, an archaeological visit if open, and whatever outdoor time suits your energy. For the second, choose either the full Laurenzana forest walk or a Sirino mountain day. Keep those alternatives separate. If you want to experience both, add another day and reconsider where you sleep. Leave the travel times flexible and keep a weather-dependent mountain day movable.

Things to try

Laurenzana: make the trees the destination

The Abetina di Laurenzana is the choice for a forest-focused day. Silver fir grows with beech here, with holly and hawthorn in the woodland community. The park describes firs reaching around 40 metres: look up as well as ahead. The full published trail takes several hours; if that is too much, ask a local guide for a shorter outing with an agreed turning point instead of assuming that a 12 km itinerary has a signed short loop.

Grumento Nova and Pertusillo: a flexible valley day

Begin with Grumentum’s museum, then decide how much walking you want. The separate archaeological site and the published Bosco Maglie route offer different levels of commitment. Around Pertusillo, the park lists Masseria Crisci as an information point near the lake. Its published service hours are summer-only, so arrange your information in advance rather than relying on finding it staffed outside that season.

Lagonegro and Laudemio: the high-mountain choice

Use Lagonegro as a gateway for the Sirino–Papa area. Laudemio’s glacial setting gives this end of the park a different character from the warmer valley below. A visit centred on the lake is separate from the full summit itinerary: do not let the appealing lake name disguise a route rated for experienced hikers. Check the approach road and the conditions above the trees before committing to the ascent.

Considering Pantano di Pignola? Check first

The park publishes a tourist-grade nature trail with 1.5 km and 3 km variants at Lago Pantano. Treat this separately designated regional reserve as its own excursion, with its own access arrangements. On 23 September 2026, the region announced its acquisition of the Oasi WWF complex and described restoration still to come. Confirm which paths, hides and visitor services are actually available before making a special trip.

When the mountains are in cloud

Make the archaeological museum your indoor anchor rather than driving from one clouded summit road to another. You can still connect the surrounding landscape with the valley’s human history. Check that it is open first, especially on a Monday, and leave the outdoor excavations for a safer weather window.

Wildlife and habitats

European beech

Beech is a defining tree of the park’s mountain belt. Around Laudemio, the woodland is part of the experience before the higher, more open slopes. Enjoy the contrast with the lower valley rather than expecting the whole park to look the same.

Silver fir

At Laurenzana, silver fir is the tree to get to know. Its presence alongside beech gives this woodland its distinctive character. The park describes exceptionally tall individuals, but there is no need to leave the path in search of a particular specimen.

Red kite

The park’s bird atlas records red kites especially in the hills and valley farmland. That makes the Agri Valley a more relevant setting to watch the sky than treating every summit as the best birdwatching spot. Take binoculars and leave time to watch from a safe stopping place; sightings are never guaranteed.

Eurasian otter

Otters are part of the park’s aquatic wildlife. Watch water quietly from permitted access points, without pushing into bank vegetation or searching for resting places.

Gray wolf

The wolf belongs to the park’s wider forest-and-mountain story. Its presence is a reason to value connected habitat, not a reason to leave the trail or expect a close encounter.

Alpine longhorn beetle

The park records this longhorn beetle in mature woodland. Leave standing and fallen wood untouched: a photograph, if an insect happens to be visible, is enough.

Stories and discoveries

Two very different lake landscapes

Laudemio occupies a glacial mountain setting; Pertusillo is a reservoir. Looking at both helps explain why “a lake day” can mean very different terrain here. Choose the exact lake and the kind of outing you want before setting off.

Getting there and practical advice

Grumentum: tickets and seasonal hours

Checked on 19 October 2026, the operator lists adult admission at €4 for the museum, €3 for the archaeological site and €6 combined. The shared ticket office is at the museum in Contrada Spineta, Grumento Nova. The museum lists Tuesday–Sunday, 08:30–19:30. For October–March the archaeological site lists Tuesday–Sunday, 09:00–12:30 and 14:30–16:00. Both normally close on Monday. Summer hours differ between the operator’s pages, so confirm them directly. Use the official visitor information or +39 0975 65074.

Information and supplies

Arrange any guided walk directly with a guide in the park’s directory. Ask where to park, whether toilets will be available and where your last reliable water refill is. Buy provisions in your chosen town before going up to a trailhead, particularly if your day starts early or ends after the shops close.

Getting there by road

A car gives the most flexibility between these scattered areas. From the A2, Atena Lucana connects with the SS598 towards the Agri Valley; Lagonegro is the relevant gateway for the Sirino side. The park’s arrival page still uses the old A3 motorway name. Plan against current road information, and enter your actual village or trailhead rather than the park headquarters.

Arriving without a car

The park identifies rail gateways including Potenza, Sapri and Maratea, followed by regional buses. Check SITA’s Basilicata timetables for the date and direction you need, then arrange the final trailhead connection. Do not assume a town bus continues to the mountains. A current warning for the Maratea approach: SITA’s 2 October 2026 notice moves the Fontana Vecchia service for Lagonegro/Potenza from 05:15 to 04:50 from 3 October until further notice because of the SP3 closure. Recheck the specific service notice before relying on that connection.

Ask about the actual route you will use

Grumentum’s operator describes mobility access, tactile reproductions and Italian Sign Language content. Call with the details that matter to you, such as step-free arrival, distances between sections and accessible toilets. For the surrounding walks, ask separately about the ground underfoot: an “easy” grading does not tell you whether a path has steps, loose stones or narrow sections.

Good to know before you go

Choose your trailhead before booking accommodation. A town in the park is not automatically close to the walk you want.

Download the official route information before leaving town and take suitable navigation equipment. These descriptions are choices, not turn-by-turn directions.

Carry the water and lunch you need. A fountain or refuge in a route name is not a promise of drinking water or an open kitchen.

Keep wildlife watching quiet and unhurried. Stay on permitted paths, leave dead wood in place and never use food to attract animals.

Check the return journey first, especially for the one-way Volturino route and any day using public transport.

For route conditions, use the [park’s official guide directory](https://www.parcoappenninolucano.it/guide.php) or call the park on +39 0975 344222.

Frequently asked questions

Choose Grumento Nova and the Agri Valley for the most flexible mix of indoor culture and outdoor time. Choose Laurenzana if woodland is the main attraction and you are comfortable with a substantial walk. Choose Laudemio for a mountain day only when your experience and the conditions fit the route.
No. Laudemio, also called Remmo, lies high on the northern side of the Sirino–Papa massif. Lago Sirino is a different lake lower down by the southern side of the mountains. Use the exact name of your trailhead when arranging a lift or accommodation.
Match the route to their usual walking experience. The full Laurenzana trail is 12 km, and Laudemio’s summit itinerary is classified for experienced hikers. A museum visit or a short, locally checked outing is a better starting point than committing the family to a full mountain route.
There is no single park-wide hiking ticket listed with these itineraries. Individual attractions and guided outings have their own arrangements. Grumentum charges admission; ask a listed guide about the route, meeting place and price before booking a walk, and confirm any requirements for your chosen trail.
No. Both belong to the park’s wildlife, but a normal visit should not depend on encountering them. Woodland, water and birdlife offer plenty to enjoy without searching for dens, resting places or sensitive sites.
Confirm the chosen trail and access road, local weather, any fire or other restrictions, and the last return connection. Check attraction opening hours separately. An itinerary remaining on the park website does not establish that it is currently passable.
